How difficult was it to rebuild that transmission?? I'm thinking of grabbing one at the end of the year and seeing if i could rebuild it then talk to a friend about putting it on my car.

If you can do a 904 you should be able to do this but you will need a special tool and a press for the overdrive section.

Couple of quick questions. What kind of shift improvement did you do?(brand) Did you change the 1-2 shift spring to raise it up to 2-3 rpm?

So is that WOT switch a hydraulic unit, or a vacuum operated unit?

I'll get some flutter with my A-518 if I don't keep the acceleration going up past the OD kick in point. This time delay relay looks like a great idea.

I did what was in the kit, generally speaking the only way to raise the shift points is by shimming the throttle valve (if I recall correct) and making custom governor weights. The weights are different than 904/727.

Fairly sure I used a Transgo SK-TFOD-JR Shift Kit with a few other tweaks.

No updates yet, spent the last few weeks working on the GTX and stuff that is overdue because of a long winter.

For those that are interested, I'd like to add this to the library:

This ATSG video covers general build tips, common issues, and interchangeability of parts in the overdrive sections of the a500/518. Enjoy!

Brief update- Here is the part number of the speedo cable I used.

ATP Part # Y819 which is an 80" truck cable. Please note 67 Darts have a threaded end on each end of their cable and you will have to change your speedo to 68-69 or find some sort of extension.

Great info, but I have a question.

When using a aftermarket crossmember like Hemi-Denny or Alterkation is it still needed to reinforce the hoop back in? If subframe connectors are being used and the torsion bars are not?

Thanks, Steve

If the torsion bars are not being used it would not have to be as strong in that area.

Question about the hobbs pressure switch. Where are you connecting it to get the pressure reading? Do you simply T it into the transmission cooler lines or are you connecting it to a test port on the A500?

Governor pressure test port.

Who's the fella that makes the laser-cut pieces to mod the crossmember? I can't find them

I'm not sure if you are referring to my kit or not.
My parts are used to convert over to the tremec T-56 MAGNUM 6 speed manual transmission. Lots of pictures and an install guide on our Facebook page at
ToddRon Restorations. Thanks, I hope this helps. Todd

Do I need to run an adaptor plate to mate the 518 to a 5.7 Hemi?

I have seen several threads and I can not confirm for sure if this is needed. Street and Performance shows and adapter kit but I am not sure its for my setup.

I have no idea, though I'm told the Gen III Hemi has the same bolt pattern as a small block mopar and just needs a flexplate which Mopar Performance sells.
