Hello everyone!!

Where to start??
I have a 1969 Dart GTS that I bracket race. 3050 Lbs.
I am running a 500 ci engine. 4.15 crank.
Heads are 1967, 915 HP, with 2.14, 1.81 valves, ported. .557"/.557" MP shaft
External oiling. MP single plane intake, Barry Grant 1000 cfm carb.
Hooker Super Competition fender well Headers.
Not important for my question... full race prepped 727, 4500 stall. 4.10 rear.

Question, many of the heads to produce big HP have raised exhaust ports. This will not work for me. I was looking for a head with stock position ports, but will give me more power.
As you see, my cam is not that big, because the heads will not handle much more.

Now, I know many people do not like Indy, and the guys running Indy. But has anyone ran these heads, 440 EZ-325 CNC? Problems? Big HP increase?
Is there any other head that will give me high HP numbers, that is better with stock position exhaust ports?

Thanks for any help you can offer!! [-o<

Call Dave Hughes at Hughes Engines and order up a set ofrom him, have him match you up with a cam, fresh timing set, some titanium retainers, manton pushrods and have your intake deep ported.

You have used the EZ-325 heads before?

It really depends upon who you have prepare the cylinder heads.

The 295 and 325 CNC ported EZ heads from Indy will require external oiling and the 325 CNC heads require offset rocker arms. Hughes does an EZ head that doesn't require external oiling that compares to the 295 CNC. We've done EZ heads that flow with the 325 EZ heads and don't require the external oiling or the offset rockers that that the 325 requires. Our EZ heads made 590 HP on a 10.3:1 440 and a XE285HL cam. Slipped in a solid roller, ground in 1968, and the 440 w/ the EZ heads made 658 HP.

We used our ported Edelbrock RPM cylinder heads on a pump gas 451 stroker and made 787 HP. The Stealths will do the same thing properly prepared.

The Indy EZ heads have the greatest potential of the three heads.

IQ52, thanks.

The external oiling and offset rockers don't really bother me. The car is only used for bracket racing, it will never see the street as long as I own it, and I have no plans of getting rid of it.

You mentioned the Stealth and RPM heads, do they have the stock location exhaust.
Was there a lot of work on the RPM's to get 787 HP on pump gas?
I would like to see some HP numbers in the 800's when I am done.

No, I have the regular port Indy EZ's that Dave stage 2 ported along with the intake in my 493" street strip motor. It makes 720 hp and just about as much torque at 5500 rpm with a little 600 lift hydraulic roller on a wide lobe centerline and relatively short duration.

All while running a old sckool mechanical six pack that gets 12 mpg on the freeway at 70 mph, and 9 around town. I love these heads, and the exhaust is right in the stock location. Heck, I painted them hemi orange and run stock valve covers and hardly anyone even notices the are not stockers...except Mopar purists!

I'm pretty sure that mileage is all about top change for the better with Passon's new 5 speed that showed up last Tuesday evening. I' figuring it should add at least 2 -3 mpg on the highway with nearly a 900 rpm drop at 70

I also am thinking of going from a 6AL-2 to a Programmable 6AL-2, so I can retard some timing in 5th gear and have start retard. I like the idea of programming the ignition curve on a laptop, but my set-up is petty dialed in tight now. I run 22 initial 36 total. I do have an ignition cutout switch, so I can spin the motor before lighting the ignition when its hot out.

Yes, they have the stock exhaust location but there is a lot of work in the heads, new valves seats in the heads and and bigger intakes plus the porting. I would only use the Edelbrocks if I already owned them.

If your going to buy new heads the EZ head would be a better starting place. They should be good to your horsepower goals. But, you'll most likely have to redo the entire chassis or that much more power will never hook or go straight. You'll be pretty lucky to be making 600HP right now with your present combination.

If you are not ready to spend about 5 grand I would stick to a non max wedge head with a sub 300cc. Run a head that uses non offset rockers.
If you want to spend the cash for race heads (440-1 bang for the buck) IMO you would do better making a new short block for the bigger race heads.

JBC426, thanks. Nice photos.

IQ52, I was doing a lot of reading over the weekend. I am now finding a lot of articles on all these heads. The nice thing is talking to people that have already tried many of these heads.
I was thinking about the chassis, that will come in time. I wanted to have good heads, now that I have a good bottom end.

MidTexCuda, the 440-1 heads are interesting, I was reading about them. Only info I did not get is if the exhaust ports are in the stock location.

440-1 heads are raised exhaust port. You can make 800hp with ported EZ heads and a big solid cam.

the reason I brought the 440-1 up was because a small amount of porting needed will closely equal the CNC maxed out EZ and you could use the extra money to buy some tti headers, intake, and rockers. The 440-1 will give you growth potential and you will have no trouble selling your headers.

Long story short if you are on a budget or don't have the block to support the 440-1 buy the EZ or pro comp with non MW window with sub 300cc port volume.

ProComp has the raised port like the Edelbrock Victor or the 440-1

i'd recommend working closely with IQ52 ^^^

also i'm not sure why you are against going to raised ports... way more potential, although it does require intake/headers changed as well as possible hood mods if you have a high rise single plane. it sounds like you are going to spend some serious bucks on heads might as well go for the big un's.

but even if you dont, the main thing you want is reliability/consistent time slips so get a pro like IQ52 do do it up right for ya

The ProComps have both intake and exhaust raised. The Edelbrock RPM heads will flow in the 290 cfm range with a 2" tube if ported correctly so there is no need for the raised exhaust.

That's an awsome combo you have. I did not know the six pack setup was capable of that kind of power. This makes me think about the six pack on my next engine build. I have a big block Duster and a flat hood with an air cleaner is the only way I'm willing to fly.

raised intake ports are not a big deal. raised exhaust is the issue.

Very true, raised exhaust is the problem. I know I can go and buy another set of headers, it is not what I want at this time.
I still have inner fenders and did not want to remove them.

Thanks everyone for the ideas. The information you have provided has been very helpful.

Thought I would add a few photos here of the car, engine, and engine in the car.

My friend owns a parts store, he is also one of my sponsors, so he wanted to display the engine in the shop before it went in the car.
The photo of the engine compartment is a bit older. There have been changes since that photo. MSD is now inside the car,and some other changes. Need to get an updated photo.
