6.1 Hemi into 72 Demon March 2018

-
My old man won't ride anything but a Shovel. Thanks for the pics!
Well I like him already!
If you go to Mopar Max at the drag strip next year in Iowa I will meet you there. Tool man Mike (Waterloo) throws a heck of a party! We had a blast last year but got soaked! Hopefully I will be running this Demon but if not I will be running the Cuda. I am easy to find I will be by the beer tent! Look for a guy with only one tattoo, it just stretches from wrist to wrist! Hah!

Have to see what the schedule brings. I've been wanting to get to that event for awhile now. Hopefully see you there!

So gentle readers back to thrashing on the Demon and all things relevant. This time of year I always get reflective as this is the month I had to unplug my older Brother (pictured on red sled) and best friend, and riding partner for literally thousands of miles, nine years ago this month. We shared women, blood, brawls, handcuffs and many miles. We rode side by side thru life and in the same lane. We rode close enough it was not unheard of for one of us to reach over and hit the others kill switch on the handle bars. 70 mph in the turns and never even look at each other, we knew where we both were. His daughter went on a run with us as the “photographer “ so she had to carry the box camera and take road pix. When we stopped for a break she was exhilarated as we had just went thru the twisties around Mt Rainer. She exclaimed that she could reach out and and touch me. My Brother and I just looked at each other and grinned, just another putt for us. When he passed I adopted his daughter as per our agreement that which ever one of us perished first the other would adopt his children. Apologies once again, I got side tracked. So anyway I am on break letting the welding smoke clear out. Here is a pix of how I set up my wire feeder for anyone contemplating setting one up. The cart is fine if you are a dwarf, otherwise it is just to short. As pictured I set the cart on a elcheapo Rubbermaid cart from HF tools. The shop is always covered in metal dust which is the arch nemesis to wire feed material so I just converted a cheap plastic box to segregate and keep nozzles cups and wire clean. Holy smokes yet another long post.

So today was a benchmark day, interior is actually starting to look like a car! Those of you who keep me on my toes will notice blinker switch is on wrong side. I just got the column stuffed into place while I had worlds best neighbor in shop to help with a spare set of hands and a fair amount of heckling. Plus he drank all my hooch! Hah! On plus side Hemi almost ate him when he strolled in without the customary Hemi greeting! Foot pedals are in place and plumbed. So I disconnected fuel pump power, then made everything else hot. No smoke!!!!!! I just could not resist and just had to bump starter very lightly just to ensure ignition system was as it should be. I am not ready to start it but darn sure getting closer. I have everything plumbed but not tied down or bracketed yet. Quite the Eureka moment to hear the starter engage. Woo Hoo. I wanted to get seat bracketed and installed today but I am old and fat and just plain ran out of poop. I will try and take a video when I actually try and start it. Not sure I am as tech savvy as Fred is when he started the Scamp. Down side of always working alone, not sure I can watch for whatever chaos I may create trying to start it plus video at same time. No guarantees.

Greetings from Saudi Brother! Glad it is coming together. Miss our calls bitching about these projects. May have to make a road trip after I am done with this part of the world and see that beauty in person. And put a few back of course.

That would be way past cool. I am literally on the verge of firing this wench up. You always got a place to stay, and keys to the liquor cabinet. Be safe.

2/7/2021 IT LIVES! Demon now has breath of life!
Been a bit since I have posted on here but needless to say I was getting stuff done. Just a bunch of piddly non post worthy junk in preparation to fire it off this weekend. It was a long day yesterday, but in the end we got her running! I need to get out to the shop for my notes but it is just over -40F with windchill out there this morning and I ain’t going out there! Once I get to my notes I will post the details as I think there are some key bits of knowledge that might save one of you some grief some day! Spent right at four hours solving software issues between Holley, Dakota Dash, and Mother Mopar Hemi. Please note just because your donor car is a 2010, factory may have snuck a 2009 engine into it. This results in a different crank trigger sensor, ask me how I know. Once we got it running I was so excited I hugged my buddy at which point my fearless hound Hemi decided to eat him to protect me. My bad. He also has a rescue LEO Shepard that did not graduate so he understood! We toasted with the pictured bottle of yummy. I did not need fire extinguisher!

2/7/2021 IT LIVES

Feels good doesn't it!!! That's a major undertaking because though I am sure the amount of information is plentiful how much of it is subjective is probably a longer list than legit documentation. Your project is not for everyone. You got the skills and calling brother.... Maybe some day in some way you man round it all up and articulate your journey through the project so that it makes sense.....

Nice work,
JW

And tell Hemi to spit out your friend I'll bring some good treats that taste better..

My sincere thanks to all you guys and one girl who have endured three years of rambling from me on this project. You folks are a wealth of encouragement and support. Not to mention the suggestions for solutions all along the way. SP72 nailed it, this project is not for the feint of heart and quite honestly pushed my skill set into the unknown on more than one occasion. Mopar just does not have the 2nd and 3rd tier support the LS guys do for engine swaps. The parts I have had to fabricate is an endless list. The simple creativity to solutions is limitless, I documented how I have done it knowing full well there is likely a dozen alternative solutions, many of which were better. As a welder my solutions often times are based upon my skill set. With a lifetime of racing my pedigree is rapidly apparent in the car. I am just thrilled you guys have enjoyed the posts and followed along. I will keep posting as I now start to make stuff a bit prettier. Heck I might even install some seats! Thanks again for all the responses and encouragement. When I would get so discouraged I would back read to motivate me. Your posts saved the day over and over again.
John

If you need to paint any of your interior like vinyl let me know I have the right paint and material that I have left over from doing mine and will give it to you.
Really excited to see it on the road this summer.

Thats a bad *** Demon!

Cley

for those about to Rock we salute You! Great work man I wish you were still around the Eugene area so I could check it out first hand. That's 6.1 looks right at home there.

Absolute work of art ! Looking forward to hearing it run ,when you get it up on u-tube . Congrats !

That's good to see!
I was thinking of giving you a poke to see if you were close to starting but you've been working OT on it.
Cheers!

So just cuz ya got it running don’t mean she’s done. This weekend I have been sorting out steering column. I had to nudge center line of column over a bit to create space for 6.1 and associated headers. This In turn made factory cover plate useless. I will machine out a new bushing to fit in four bolt clamp rig pictured. Next step is cleaning up jumpers I had to improv to get her to fire (red wire drug across tunnel) Then once I get tangled mess of wires somewhat under control I will fabricate some kind of sexy fuse box cover plate that is easily removable. Hemi says what’s up! I had to move her chair. She is not happy with me. Her chair is a legit lazy boy high end recliner that was on CL. It was broken, all I had to do was repair it and put casters under it! All in 40 bucks! I have to travel out of state this weekend for some equipment trials so won’t get very far.

Oh, it all the incidentals that you now get to go back through a square up. That stuff can be a time consuming machine but you got the callin' for sure.....

Slopar has it dialed in, you got a wood stove and a hound and ya got a fixture! Hah! Good looking hound. Wife sequestered herself in her office today to do tax junk. Me n Hemi did what any self respecting cowards will do and hid in the shop, want no part of sorting out tax stuff. Of course next thing ya knew the music got turned up, the wrenching got put down and the toddies got poured. Middle of afternoon wife poked her head into the shop and exclaimed she was cooking a nice dinner and expected me to be sober for it? Hah! That horse is out of the barn! You guys and one girl are the best!
