66 Dart Owners thread

This should be a no brainer but I recently purchased my mid life crisis car. a 1966 Dart 270 with a 273 engine. My first car was a 1966 with a slant 6. Its in great shape but the dash pad is in bad shape. How do I remove the &%#@ thing. I'm very handy so don't hesitate.

Remove speedo cluster and glove box liner, with a 1/4 inch drive ratchet and extension use a 1/4 inch socket?.(might not be correct size,it,s been awhile)remove 6-8 speed nuts.Wear long sleeve shirt.:D

I'ts not fun to get to. On the inner side of the dash there are 4 - 5 nuts that hold it on, on mine the center one was either missing or not installed. here is a pic we removed the pad be for we removed the dash.
I should be getting mine back from "Just Dashes" soon it wasn't cheep though it should/Better be nice.

Last week I had some free time so I did a time swap on my D/Dart. The wheels and tires were on my 64 Belvedere and I wanted to see how much tire I could get underneath it. What do you think?

Air Shocks??

Good job Scott. Thinks for the help here. When I start a thread I feel a responsibility to monitor it's progress. Somehow this one has slipped through the cracks for me in the last couple weeks. I owe you a Labatts. lol toolmanmike

I have a 66 270. 273 Engine I've noticed most of the cars on this post are raised up to allow bigger wheels/tires. Did you guys use air shocks or install new rear springs??

The only good way to raise the rear of these cars is to install new springs. If the rear sags you need new springs anyway. You can get some in1 or 2" over stock lift. Try ESPO Springs and Things or PST (who sponsors this site.) or I believe Mopar Performance has them available too for around $100 each. I have seen them on the Summit website. tmm

Having a tire too big for the wheel well can be dangerous. NEVER use an air shock to give clearence. If the shock loses air suddenly (blown seal or cut hose) the body can come down onto the tire(s) and cause you to lose control. Even stiff springs aren't the answer if the tires are to big for the opening. I know of two cases where that scenario caused an accident. Both times, the car hit a big dip and locked one tire making the car spin out and crash. One hit a street lamp pole and the other went into a building.

Anybody else notice the ad for classicindustries ? They've got a good lookin yellow 66 on the cover but when I looked in the catalog there wasnt a whole lot to offer for it. Kinda disappointed :-(

66 Dart.... small block, all motor, 2870 pounds. Just clicked off a personal best of 9.02 in the 1/4 mile this past weekend. 8.90's are well in line.

Who says you need a big block?

Ok you can't leave us hanging. What's your combo? tmm

To be dead honest the combo is pretty simple. I attached a time slip for anyone that has doubts. My car is 2870 pounds and I run a 904 trans with billet components and a 6200 stall converter and a 4.56 gear. The engine is a 430 cu Siamese small block on Alcohol with a custom ground cam to match the cylinder head flow numbers. 1.7 rockers on a set of W2 Cast heads that flow 315/270. Yep.. that's right W2 cast heads! Compression is 13.5:1 stroked 4" crank. I added a dry sump oil system to provide me with the longevity that I am looking for. Vacuum is 8 inches and oil pressure is a steady 60 psi at any RPM. The headers are custom built by myself and a friend as is the rest of the car.

Nothing on this car is crazy special. It is simply matching the combinations correctly. I launch the car at 3400 RPM and as you see from the 60 foot times it leaves hard but with very little wheel stand. If anyone wants specific details and specs, feel free to ask.

A lot of hard work, research and yes..... a best friend (Rob Eppler) who kept us focused on the job at hand making the right decisions along the way.

I have a 66 Dart conv. Is the windshield gasket the same for all cars? The book says it is. The gasket does not seem to be big enough.

Sivermyle: not sure abou t specific 66 dart, but has been my experience the windshield will have to come out to access the screws that are on top of dash under the windshield gasket???? there are a couple of scews on side of dash unit, drop the steering column etc???? maybe easier: drop the col to access instrument cluster, take out front seat makes it easier and work at it like that. all depends on your age!???? at 66 its hard to work upside down now ! LOL

the gasket will work from 63-66 but there is a slight difference in one edge(inside only) that will show some metal (I think it's on the top edge, it'd been about 8 years since I did it so....) I used some good black rubber weather tape put right next to the seal and installed the inside trim on my old 66 dart. I have not done the curent one yet but do have the gasket out and can check it with pictures if needed.
