74 power wagon dream truck...

-
I like the builds and this a great distraction! We had the young doing the GMC and we all encouraged. Why should you be different please keep posting and sharing your hobby. Good stuff!

Keep at it. I always check in. Not usually have anything to add.

what’s up with the axles? You sometimes really gotta tank on the carrier to get it out. Sometimes a shop rag bunched in the gears pops em out.

My project took a giant leap ahead today..
Two 78 Power Wagons popped up on Craigslist a few weeks ago.. A project 4×4 and parts 2×4... Much work was done with plenty $ spent... I passed on them mostly because lack of space..
The guy I buy lots of my parts from got them and called me first... He's a little over an hour away and has property... I drove my wife's car out (with cash in hand) to see what he had...
I bought the complete rebuilt D60 rear end.. (with locker - witch I didn't have)..
New carrier bearings new outer bearings new drums new brake pads new wheel cylinders new brake lines new emergency cables and shock plate setup for dual shocks..
I bought the front Dana 44 which could be a locker not sure... Completely rebuilt with new disc brake rotors new calipers new pads new upper and lower ball joints new u-joints new carrier bearings new brake lines new soft hoses new ball joints on the steering arm also set up for dual shocks and also the upper DualShock converted bumper stop shock holders that go on the frame to match...
Also both Axel's have a custom rounded plate welded to the bottom of them.. I guess some kind of reinforcement...
Both the Axel's have a thick coat of shop dust on them as they've been inside probably for quite a number of years for waiting the finish of this project that never materialized...
I could have bought the 6-in lift springs with the bushings and extra leaves added but I don't want that kind of rough ride..
Also a 3 in body lift but I think that's too much. he also has the club cab for sale which has all the fabric done to it with new floorboards and so forth but it doesn't come with the title he wants to keep the title with the frame... Also I want to keep my truck a 74 for emissions reasons...
I paid for the Axel's but I'll pick them up on Friday .. Lord willing...

Was gonna get a rough country 4" complete kit.. all 4 springs, shocks, ECT...
Unfortunately the ship date keeps moving out a day everyday lol... They don't have nothing in stock..
Looks like this just gives me plenty of time to clean parts paint parts and so forth...

From all the research I’ve done when I lifted mine, Skyjacker was one of the top.
Yes and they even have some in stock actually LOL.. the rough country with front rear springs all four shocks the 4-in steering left and all accommodating hardware is 799.. the skyjacker for just the springs and u-bolts is a little over a thousand... Then of course you have to buy the shocks and the steering piece which I'm sure will add up to another 500 bucks... So basically double...
If it was the only thing I had to buy for the truck that might be one thing but with me having to buy basically everything brand new for the truck it gets a little deep... I've got plenty of time to kill rebuilding the transfer case and getting all the other small frame parts blasted and painted... I'm going to buy myself a few weeks here and see how things go....
my plan is to take the frame down for blasting and powder coating tomorrow and Lord knows that's going to take a couple weeks...

Things just got crazy again...
Might not have time to drop off frame tommorow... Some crazy parts deals are in the works.. will know more tomorrow late afternoon...

I picked up my two axles today...
Turns out the front is also a locker...
remember these are completely rebuilt with new brake lines new emergency brake cables all new ball joints rotors brakes calipers u-joints and all the dual shock setup stuff...

What I was leading to last night is a little parts truck that I was trying to get today and did. I shared it with my friend that I get parts from and pretty much gave him the truck and took a few little trinklets for myself. Along with him giving me a good chunk of floorboard for the floor hump and a promise of two very good 73 doors..
A couple of the trinklets...

I also passed by JB Fabrications out of Salem and got custom rods for when I rebuild the transfer case for twin sticks..

I'm hoping I got lucky..
Had been watching the "Rough Country" complete 4" lift kit and the shipping date keeps saying a week out and moving forward a day each day.. as in they don't have it in stock and not sure when they're going to... I looked last night and it said "low stock"????... I called this morning and it seems to boil down to the rear leaf spring availably... Said they had three sets in stock... I got off the phone and hit PayPal... Got home from work and email said shipping label created.. looked at the website and it says ship date a week out...

Got tracking numbers for five packages..
I assume shocks and hardware in one box and four individual springs..
Looks like we'll find out Friday...

Nice work on the truck.

I have a 73, replaced all of the suspension & did the chevy brake swap & everything.

Honestly, I didn't read every single page, maybe you have it covered.
Have you checked these out? I got them for my rig.
1st Gen Dodge Front Frame Shackle Hanger kit W150 W250 W350 Cummins Ram Ramcharger

I have no affiliation, not trying to sell them. I got them and they're pretty nice, kind of pricey, but if you're going this far on it... I couldn't find shackles/ bushings anywhere & found this guy. Thought I'd pass it on.

The only thing to look out for is the top bushing bolt is aimed right at the header collector.
(I have old hedmans) Had to "dimple" the collector so it didnt touch. Also put the bolt in from the outside in case I need to get it out later without dropping the header.

I did get my old shackle bushings out today.. I can see I'll be in an up hill battle to get correct bushings...

I would suggest removing the locker from the front end.
The issue is unless you are running in the mud all the time, you will not be able to steer the truck.

I have lockers front and rear in my Willys, and it will rip the steering wheel out of your hand in 4wd.

My best friend warned me about the locker in the front... Honestly the only time I would ever use it would be in snow packed iced roads or in soft sand at the beach which may be less than a couple times a year...
Even when I put my sled deck on the back of my truck I rarely put it in four wheel drive...
