Yesterday was a shorter day in the shop, and most of my focus was on mounting and fitting the motor before diving deeper into the chassis. The clutch linkage seems like it'll work fine, though it'll need a little welding. The mid plate, on the other hand, is going to be tricky—I'll need to make sure it doesn't interfere with the linkage or headers.

Midplates are definitely tricky. I will be starting over with mine. Hard to explain why except I messed up lol

I'm also working on the dash fitment before selling the original. Once the truck goes into winter storage, I’ll be able to ramp up productivity even more.

Got more work done today. Pulled out the mock-up and finished up the driver's side hinges. The new transmission cross member arrived too. Now, I need to tackle the front rack again and adjust the fit slightly due to the engine setback."

Kinda pissed off about the quarters I ordered full quarter panels but they sent me skins FML so instead of fixing it they refunded me everything but shipping its going to be more work to get the results I want but I'll make it happen I guess.

You're lucky you have your car to start with and not my pile lol
 
Since I haven't found a good chassis shop nearby, I decided to pick up a tubing bender so I can work on the cage myself. I still need to get the dies for a nice clean bend, but it's a start. I also started drilling out the hinges—intentionally uneven, just like the early Pro Stock ones, which were done a bit haphazardly. Plus starting to figure out the new Dana 60 from strange.

About your bender, I wouldn't use that for trying to bend your cage bars. That may bend bar stock, flat stock or even pipe, but for your cage you want a mandrel tubing bender. i got mine from Woodward Fab.

About your bender, I wouldn't use that for trying to bend your cage bars. That may bend bar stock, flat stock or even pipe, but for your cage you want a mandrel tubing bender. i got mine from Woodward Fab.

Yes I ended up returning it they guy of Etsy I was getting my retro fit dies from stoped making them we converted a couple of them to do tubing before.But it was a couple years since I did my last one so it ended up not working out. I got a woodward coming, but in the strum I have a local chassis shop (import drift cars) bending the tubes
 
Update quarter skins are going back. Thanks to my buddy at Jegs I got a set of full quarters inbound at a great price! Plus I no longer have to deal with that other company (thank god)

Boy that is a ton of work in those hinges, lol I have to say I'm proud of you for doing that.
 
Tonight, Sarah and I made great progress stripping the car. We got the rest of the windows out (all in one piece!) and pulled down the headliner, along with the last of the mice nests. After that, we removed the remaining trim and cleaned out the trunk. Next up, I'll show why the quarter panels need to be replaced—the skins are heading out, and brand-new full quarters are on the way from my guys at Jegs. It's a bit over the top, but for the level of build I'm going for and the quality of the paintwork that's coming, I want to make sure it's the best canvas possible for who is doing the paint!

Mail call was perfect today! The new Taylor 10.4 plug wires arrived—enough for 16—and the last of the vintage stickers for the car came in too. On top of that, I just found out the heads are finished, so I’m really excited. Can’t wait to get them in hand, and see how they turned out at the hands of BES and Darren Morgan!"

The car is completely stripped, and I wasted no time using the hole saw and cut-off wheel to shave off another 16 pounds! Next up is getting it mounted to the rotisserie and fully blasted so there are no hidden surprises left. I also need to reach out to my local NHRA tech about the cage layout at the front, especially around the dash bar. If they don’t approve, I might end up cutting everything from the A-pillars and redoing the door bars. Safety comes first since I’ll be racing it!

I spent some time last night working on the engine mounts, followed by fixing some overzealous drilling in the rocker area, which required welding a few cuts. After that, I decided to take a much-needed break since I hurt my neck and upper back the other day. Instead, I caught up with an old Mopar friend and updated my to-do list.

I got some unexpected news from NHRA tech today: for my build, they want a 25.5 spec cage in the car, which means the whole floor has to go and I’ll need to add a lot more tubing. On the plus side, I found out it qualifies for SS/AM!

Tonight, after working out a game plan for the cage with some clear-headed input (thanks to Sarah), I made progress on the rocker panel repair and got it about 95% done. The 10-gauge plate for the mid plate also arrived just as I was wrapping up. Additionally, I prepped the blow shield to add the clutch pivot.

The plan now is to strip the car down completely to bare metal, then move on to the trunk floor and side panels. After that, I’ll tackle the quarter panels on both sides, essentially repairing all the OEM parts before modifying anything else. This way, I’ll have a solid baseline to start from for further modifications.

Once that’s done, I’ll narrow the rear frame rails, relocate the spring perches inward so the outer edge aligns with the new rails, and then tub the car, stretching the quarter openings by 4.5 inches. Afterward, I'll remove the subframe connectors and replace them with chromoly tubes, then get the updated cage fitted to my liking.

There’s still a lot to do, but that will be my main focus over the next four months.

While in the office I mapped out the underside cage, so when I remove the floor, I'll have a layout ready to tie into before sectioning a new pan in half and fitting it back in. Funny enough, I even managed to scare off what’s supposed to be the best chassis shop in the state with how detailed and complex this project is turning out to be! So looks like I'll be fitting it.

I finished up the mid plate on the car tonight, and it turned out great.

However, after reflecting on some big changes ahead—like the need for roll bars, new floor pans, and fundamentally altering the car’s spirit—I had a deep discussion with Sarah. We’ve decided to scale back the car’s ET potential so it doesn’t exceed 8.50. This should make it highly competitive in the NHRA class I’m aiming for, as well as in nostalgia Pro Stock circuits.

This means the existing cage will largely stay, with a few small revisions to improve fit and update the rear half. I know I was getting a bit overwhelmed by NHRA and SFI mandates, but after consulting with chassis experts and really considering what will preserve both the car's spirit and longevity, I believe sticking to an 8.50 cage and capping its potential ET will keep the car authentic while still outperforming what these cars were doing up until '75.
