CAR HUNT! or BOF & me car shopping!

-
Ya had me skerd with that dueling banjos thing . . . I was afraid to look at any more pictures!! :bootysha: lol

Amazing how far that 40 Plymouth had sunk into mother earth! I bet that car could tell some stories! :read2: Thanks a bunch John . . . . that was fun. :hello1:
FOTO can't get those heaps?? :banghead: Rog
Foto can't get field finds or stuff not rolling due to ramp design. Before that job though, I will be welding sheet metal to the tops of my ramps to make 1 side of them smooth. Then I will have to "C" clamp the ramps to the truck deck to prevent the ramps from lifting and sliding. Will try this before calling the roll back. The only thing is the roll back can tuck deck under car and lift it out of the ground before pulling up the deck. I will have to dig first to get hooks under car then drag with all 10K pounds of wench to get them to "POP" out! LOL
Lot of work. The Mustang we did in an earlier chapter of
CAR HUNT! FABOZENE:cool:
I had to jack up each wheel and move over out of the holes first before pulling them.
Alot easier with the roll back.

Hit it!

Not all days are bad and sad like the last chapter.
Thought I would share a quickie version of
CAR HUNT! FABOZENE:cool:

Unlike chapter 36, this quickie is all about the fast snatch!
No NOT THAT!!!
I mean just an easy phone call, a quick drive, friendly owner, fast deal, quick load and GONE!!!

I had to share this one though real quick with FABO cause I had to laugh.
When it was on FOTO's back I noticed how much the ranger looked like FOTO JR!! LMAO!!!

So there it is, not enough for a chapter of
CAR HUNT! FABOZENE:cool:
but just enough for a laugh! LOL!!:hello1:

It may help to get cars up and pulled on the deck to do what I have done with my car trailer and winch. I jack them up and put a piece of 2x12 cut about 1 & 1/2 foot long where the tires were sunk then let them back down on the boards before winching. Funny to see you with an S10 and a ranger as I have recently bought both also. lol

Not a bad looking truck . . . should be able to flip it pretty easy. What's wrong with it mechanically? Rog

Got it running yet?

No not yet.
It was only home for a few hours so far. I wanted all the bird crap off it by the time ABB got home. She's been whining lately for a winter driver and this one has her name all over it!!
Automatic 4X4. 2.9 V-6. Still has manual lockers on front axle too!
The 4X4 enguages with a shifter on the floor not push button.

The previous owner said it was parked 3 years ago when his Father passed away, it was his dad's truck. I know the guy who sold it to me. He works at our local Dodge dealer and remembered me and FOTO cause on Thursdays after 1 of the auto auctions I go to, I always run my truck (If there is no car on board from the auction) through all the dealerships on route 50 on the way home. I stop in each looking for wholesale back of the lot cars. So he called me from one of the flyers I've dropped at the dealers. Most everybody at our local Dodge dealer knows me anyway.
He also said him and a buddy had it running last summer driving it around their 250 acre farm.
It wanted to start, but after the big backfire we had so close to the straw bird nests that were there, I was not willing to gamble further untill I got the engine compartment cleaned out.
Besides, I paid $250.00 less due to it not running.:yawinkle:

Yeah, I've done that before and will have to this time too. I carry dunage with me in pass side tool box. The boards over the holes is the second step. First you have to dig out to put jack under car. Then once jacked up, I usually just push dirt from jack into the tire hole. Once the car is on the ground, it's usually high enough to put on the tow hooks.
That leads to the main problem. The cars will slide on ground to my ramps OK. But once a non rolling wheel hit my ramps they want to lift out of ramp bracket on tail of the deck. Once the ramp lifts out of the bracket the ramp will slide up and foward as the non rolling car tire or wheel tries to get onto the ramp. (That would be where the big "C" clamps would come into play) My ramps are not smooth to let the wheel slide either. The just have cross angle steel with the point down to resemble a ladder. So each time the tire hits one it wants to lift each time. I usually work around this with wood blocks holding the ramp while wedged against the rockers.
Now, if you get all that under control, if the truck and ramps are not exactly level the non rolling/steerable tires will want to slide off the side of the ramps due to not being able to steer non rolling tires.

Hence the ease of a rollback that drives up, tucks deck under bumper, quick lift out of holes, place boards down over holes let car/deck down, the wench onto deck. Once car is halfway on deck, yuo tilt deck to lift car from back holes and continue wenching onto the deck.
No muss no fuss but $75.00 for each car pick and ride to my house.

I'm still hoping I can weld sheet steel on top of my ramps to make them smooth as ice, but I will also need some side to side direction guide of some sort to keep from slipping off the narrow ramps.

Yard dawg and I have been planning some sort of wide sheet ramp that would slide off the deck onto the ramps and latch into them at their widest point from side to side, using the ramps as support and the sheet on top between the gap in the ramps to allow for easy rollback "like" sliding onto the deck. Also would be putting car ramps under FOTO's front tires to lower tail of deck closer to ground.

Been sleeping on this problem for a while.:-k

Weird we got the same vehicles at the same time.
My s-10 blew a fuel pump while my son and I was finishing up cleaning on Sunday. I can't even get a wrench on the fule filter to change out. Not enough room to work so it's heading to the junk yard this AM with 3 cans of gloss black and alot of clean up done to it. Oh well, I've even sent them to the yard after putting new pumps in just to find out some other unfixable problem arises. (I am not a mechanic)

Not a bad looking truck . . . should be able to flip it pretty easy. What's wrong with it mechanically? Rog

Well, right now, I don't hear a fuel pump running. It needs a new battery too. It will be getting the battery today and then I will be able to trouble shoot further then. I'm going to take in the new battery I just bought for the S-10 and return it for a top post batt for the ranger. If I can get to the fuel pump easy I will swap it out myself. I really hate dropping tanks though! On my old Dakota the book said to drop tank but when I stopped by the dealer they had my bed off and jacked up where the tank was to allow easy access to pump. I would even buy new bed bolts if I have to cut the old ones due to this being so much easier than dropping the tank. Bed lifting is the way to go for this job if pump is inside tank.
So I will be checking that out first.

It was bought cheap enough so it may just be taking another ride to the dealer for a diagnostic. They charge $75 for that but applies to repair. They only want $150 max labor to R&R fuel pump and I get the parts myself. Sometimes it's just cheaper and easier for me to just drop it, pay for it, and pick it up fixed!
These trucks around here are really holding their value. In our area this truck will be easy sell at $1500.

Today is going to be nuts. I will be over in KY to drop the S-10 and hopefully have my check in hand by 8:10 AM. Then I have to drive about 30 miles and the auction starts at 9AM. The dodge caravans I'm wanting are towards the end of the auction so I should be good there. But I won't have time to look at the tow away line up. I would rather buy one of the repo units due to them already being detailed and title is on premises. I could actually start trying to sell one of those repo units right away with no work involved due to them already being detailed.
I am really needing something to flip like 6 weeks ago. I'm against the wall for a few of my bills right at the moment. The S-10 check will take care of those.

Man I tell you what I have just discovered this thread....well actually I discovered it at 5:00 this morning..so far I have read...every page lol. Its a great story..I laughed, I cried, I even got sick a few times, but all in all a great story

It's way too new for my know how!! LOL

Jr is really small on the inside. I used to have one just like about 15 years ago. Mine had extend cab though and was blue. I hope JR is half the truck that one was!!

Alright by me Cliff!
How have ya been doing of late?
Did ya make the big move yet?
Sorry, I haven't been on FABO much lately either. I keep chasing the elusive profit that I can blow on stupid crap like electric, water, gas....
Not much goings on here till this past weekend I finally got to buy a S-10 & lumina on Sat. Both went to scrap this week. Then yesterday I got the ranger. I hope it don't bleed me to get it running.
I found out the hard way on a couple of cars I fought putting fuel pumps in only to find out later that tranny was out on 1, and who knows what was wrong with the other. If the previous owner wasn't BSing me, it could be a cut wire somewhere or worse case, both in tank pump and pressure pump.
What the heck was ever wrong with the mechanical pumps like on our Abodies?? Guess they weren't making enough$!
The one pump outside the tank was enclosed in so much steel, I just said "F" it! Put it on FOTO's back and away it went to the Betty Ferd clinic!:D

Wish the heck I had a lift!! Who am I kidding, I'd be happy with a garage big enough for my tools AND the car I'm working on. It won't be long before my tent will be put away for the season and all restores come to an end....
Well...maybe the King Midget will fit in the garage with the tools this winter!:D

I hope things are going well for you. When I get some above the back bills wiping me out, I'll try to send some your way.
Keep the faith Cliff, it's bound to get better soon.
Your friend, John.

Your friend, John.

Doing good John. The big move is this coming Monday (Labor Day) and we can't wait. I'll say a prayer for you to get a yard full of cars to scrap, and hit the Lotto.

That Little ranger might have 2 Fuel pumps. One in the tank and on the frame. The fuel filter is also on the frame. I had a 88 F150 that had 3 pumps,1 High pressure pump (on the frame) and 2 intank pumps (each tank) Those lil Rangers are a tough little truck but the old inline 4 wasn't that great.

Thanks Cliff!
If I hit it you'll be getting your share soon after! Only prob, I won't spend money on the ticket! Cars, parts, paint and fuel only!

I knew I would hate buying something that new!!
Why not just put 3 pumps and 6 filters on em and they could make even more money off of us! LOL!!
It'll be back here by friday morning, just in time for the Nat. Muzzel loaders shoot in Friendship IN. Tons of people drive buy on US 50 from Cinti from 9.9.11 - 9.17.11. It'll be sittin up on the highway Sat all freshly buffed and waxed. I'm even going to clean the windows!

Godspeed to you and your family.
Just joined your moving thread.
Looking foward to your next post. Those miles you're doing right now will be the hardest in the trip hills and such.
Prayers sent.
John.

Be wary wary quiet...heh heh heh....
It's car hunting season.......

So, think it's about time for
Another episode of
CAR HUNT! FABOZENE:cool:
is on the way!!!!

That's right by golly! Chapter 37 of
CAR HUNT! FABOZENE:cool:
looming.
Plans are like this. For those who want to go you know the rules;

No fighting
No food stops
No bathroom stops

We will be leaving about 10:30 - 11AM on Sat morning on 9.10.11.
We will be hunting the elusive creature we all know and love called the

F---
------k!

(Hint above is name of car, fill in the blanks. Now that I see it written like that, it looks kinda dirty, huh??!!)

I was going to keep it a secret this time so we wouldn't have any internal security breeches.
As of late we have been having problems with internal leaks getting out to the public press and the AP and the XYZ, often them breaking the story before we here at FABO have a chance to review our own valuable nuggets of knowledge and publish it as a breaking story exclusively here on
CAR HUNT! FABOZENE:cool:

Why bother sifting through hundreds of car for sale ads, so and so told such and such about this car and that car.... Driving hundreds of miles, 2 - 4auctions a week and more just to have your story scooped by the competition?
Aaawww, There aint no competition when it comes to FABO's own
CAR HUNT! FABOZENE:cool:

LOL! (Endless self promotion with a tease)
Oh! I forgot to mention........RULE #4;
Popdart has shotgun!

Do you actually manage to get dealers to buy flipped cars you clean up? I never been so lucky.

Do you actually manage to get dealers to buy flipped cars you clean up? I never been so lucky.

No not yet.
I was hauling there to get the fuel pump and filter changed. I'm to old to do that without a lift. If there was more room to work maybe. I dropped tank on a full size ram van last year by myself and reinstalled by my self...
WOW!
At 50 years a man just got to know his limitations! LOL
I'm dropping a fuel pump and filter off at Ford at 7AM. I'll be picking it up on Friday. By Sat at noon I'll have it finished detailed all fluids topped and Ford will be servicing the tranny and transfer case too. Now I'll have all the fresh reciepts to turn over to the new owner. It should be sold by 9.17.11. I very rarely have a car last more than 48 hours. Besides the Darts and the car hauler the longest we kept one driving it everyday was about a month or 2. I would have loved to have kept that last caravan but I needed a dang house payment again.
OH! I just remembered, I'll have to mow the lot I use on the side of the highway! My grandpa sold a few cars off that same spot. I have real good luck there too, as long as the price is cheap. The auctions I go to lately the cars are selling for retail or above what I would sell them for. it's getting harder to find any cars 1500 and under with an engine in them let alone running and driving.
I'll be able to dig a couple up this winter but can't really filp in winter. I loose my work area when weather gets funkey.
After the auctions, I usually stop by all the dealers looking for wholesale cars (BACK of lot)
Well there aren't any!! People are driving them. I went into the chebby dealer today. After being passed around I met with the guy I would buy from right? Well he's only in 2-3 days a week. The rest of the time he's in Orlando, Atlanta, Durham, buying all the good used cars he can get and shipping them back up here to the dealer, no matter the make or model.

Reason I stopped there today was to fish them out. I just saw a TV ad where they were using alot of the same ad copy as me....
"Cash for your car Running or Not!
"Top cash prices paid to you on the spot, towing free"

Their ad copy;
"Bring in your used car and trade it in. If you don't want to trade just sell it to us. We are paying top cash prices for your used car running or not"

So I stopped by there today to see what the score was.
I think I finally got it all figured out now.
Dealer buys all he or she can.
They turn into place like manhiem auto auctions who charges me the public $200.00 for a 6 month pass to be able to come in and bid on cars.
Now here's the rub. These dealers bring like 10 cars to sell. (most of these were cars he bought there 5 weeks ago and can't sell) So while his cars are selling, He buys 10 more different cars to take back to lot. Fresh inventory every 5 weeks. Constant new customers due to constant new cars. They are playing the numbers. They don't want the public there either. They have like 4 auction lanes running at the same time. I (the public) can only bid on like 50 - 75 cars a week in 1 lane only not being able to bid in the dealer lanes. But the dealers can come over and bid in my lane on the public offered cars. What a crock!! They will come over and bid it up if it is a deal. Usually bidding against me and other public untill it goes over retail price. Don't hurt them none. They think you the public will walk over and make them an offer or the other 5 weeks of public going by their lot will buy it. If not, they just run it through the same auction again!!
Keep in mind, I on the other hand being private would only buy up to 1 car a week and not bring it back through so auction wouldn't make as much in fees. Also the dealers buy and sell at auction with auction credit available to "dealers" only, not the private sector like me.
I want my $200 6 month bidding fee back!!
Junk cars for scrap? Not out there.
Fixer uppers you can buy for 5 or 6, put 3 or 4 in them and ask 18 sell for 16? 1 comes along about 1 a month on average. But still only get about 10 a year.

Boring huh! LMAO!!:D
Well have a great day tomorrow Asktoro!
I'll be at manhiem in the AM wishing I could buy something. Last week I did find out about a tow away lane I could bid in. (Now that's my style) I'm still not sure how those titles come back though. They have up to 28 days to give you your title. I can't have my money tied that long so I only will bid on cars that are green lighted with titles there on premisies.

Nahhh I aint spendin the $30 in fuel to go over there.
I'll just wait till this Sat and chapter 37 of
CAR HUNT! FABOZENE:cool:
At least if I don't come home with that car, there will be a good reason for it other than some auto auction dealer biddin BS!
Think I'll clean the garage up tomorrow. I can't find anything in there after a summer season of restore work!:glasses7:

Has anyone guessed what type of car we are going for in chapter 37 of
CAR HUNT! FABOZENE:cool:

I guess it's just me and FOTO tomorrow morning.
If anyone from FABO wants to go, RSVP and I'll pack a cooler!
Better charge the camera batteries!:hello2:

You do seem to find all the hidin treasures.......
