What do local shops charge you guys to mount balance tires? I had 1 place wanted over $60 for 2 tires(no rims) & dismount 2 tires-- needless to say I left..I found another shop for $35 including tire disposal --- cannot find an old gas station with some teenagers & slip them a $20 any more.

You don't need to order by application, you simply order by the tire size you want. My last order was for 14 tires for three different vehicles and I simply picked out the sizes and brands I wanted.

In what country? Where is the law that backs that up. Big O Tires examined the tires, found them to be in very good condition. These are NOS, very low mileage, had been in storage.
What is more dangerous, Them balancing my tires or allowing me to drive around on tires that are seriously out of balance.
If is lawsuits they are worried about, How about if after they refused me service I get on the freeway to go home and a single car accidents happens as a result of driving on seriously out of balance tires.

My tire machines have been one of the best investments I have ever made. When I was active crushing cars we might break down 200 or 300 in the same week so we could save the aluminum wheels.

For them balancing your tires, if they balance them/fix them they are now responsible and would be willfully going against industry standards. American rubber manufacture association has set standards on how to repair mount balance rotate service life ect..of tires. Any handling of tires not done in accordance with industry standard is an automatic loss in court. It is unfortunate but the world we live in today.....The proper thing for them to do is recommend 4 new tires if you refuse its your fault. people look at large stores as a cash cow big business easy target 1 mistake and people will lawyer up and expect to settle for tens of thousands of dollars. Little shops don't worry if the are sued they just close up thy simply cannot afford multimillion dollar lawsuits. Large stores have to worry about things like this because they have been sued many times in the past.

trailer tires are a totally different ball of wax...they actually have time intervals for replacement rather than mileage.
I grew up around tires (my Dad owned a Goodyear Store for over 30yrs) and you would think I would know better. These had slite dryrot but the tread was still real good and I never thought about checking the serial date on the tires when I bought the car. If I did... I would have seen that the tires were over 15yrs old!
I was going over a bridge when this tread separated from the tire- thank God the tire did not blow and actually held air for about an hour after blowout.

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink. I have some new tires that I got used in 1996... I bet those are going to be real good too. Glad it didn't damage your car any worse than it did when the tire came apart.

Back in 82, I had a Firestone 721 do the exact same thing. It was less than a year old and had less than 10K miles on it. Seems back then the steel belted radials could not handle the 120+ degrees in Phoenix. This one blew in Colorado while on vacation. I have a picture of it somewhere around here.
Hell, I've seen Firestone 721s separated coming off the truck brand new. Just like Criterions, Mohawks, and countless other cheapo brands. Gluing rubber to steel ain't a natural thing. I don't care how good your process is. Separation is always a possibility. Anybody that's ever been in the tire business will tell you Firestone ain't ever made a good tire. Although I have seen the little Bridgestones the little Mazda trucks used to come with literally get over 100K on them and still have tread left. People were changing them because they were scared they would separate because they were so old.

what he said below... There is no law, but there is precedent, and thats all that is needed for any tire place to cover there ***. If they do anything other than refuse service they are liable.
And if your tires are in storage and in such great shape they shouldn't need to be rebalanced UNLESS you knocked a weight off, or what i would suspect... the tire is breaking down and is moving (i.e. no longer safe). the 10yr rule has been in place for a long time...

That's the problem, there are two sides to the coin and business has to decide what is right for them. I bet you and most people would be singing a different song if he would have balanced them and god forbid you have a failure and hurt/kill yourself or some innocent family. Seems to be human nature. Drive around town with bad, dangerous tires, but when the first guy tells you there OK, everyone else is a money grubbing a-hole trying to rip you off and your never going to do business again with them. If it were my shop, I would pass on the 35 bucks and send you packing also.

I have a 71 Duster. I had the same car I bought new in 71. Back then we (kids) wanted a cool looking car. With our very limited resources it seemed the best way to cool down the car were with smaller tires on the front.
I like the wheels that are on my car now, and the raised white letter, I am open to suggestions to suggestions on what size tires meet that criteria. And for that matter, what brands you suggest.

Discount Tire?? I have come to the conclusion that anyone from the Dealer that sells it to you and the Junkyard it ends up in along with everyone in between is out to stick it right to you as hard as they can. Without any kind of lubricant whatsoever. One of the very few places left on my list of places I like and trust is Discount Tire.

This only two times I went to Big O tire is when Discount refused to service my tires.
don't ever use that old tires on any car you or your family drives, thats just playing lottery with your lives.
Braking distance, handling.. etc is compromized. even 8 yeard old NOS tires are crap, don't matter where they are storaged. rubber loses its properties get harder due time.
And if you have ever driven on ice/snow on old tires and new ones on same car you can see difirence, just 5 years old tires have twice long braking distance...

I appreciate your information, I have not driven on Ice/snow for over 30 years. Not since I moved to Arizona. It snows maybe once every 4 years and it usually melts within an hour. Our normal temperature range is from 7.25 degrees C in the winter, to 50 degrees C in the summer.
That is +/- a degree or two

Your tires are really old. A big tire chain doesn't want the potential lawsuit in case of a blow out. Pretty simple.
