Don't see many with that stripe and it looks great, especiallly in that color combo.

Nice Dart Idaho!
Chris, what are you using for engine paint?? Dad n I used Eastwoods brush on engine paint and worked great! We shoulda got the thinner with it though as the paint sets up quick!

Nice snag on the 340 too!!

The Dart Sport belongs to unkownsnake. Very nice indeed.

Hi Steve I am going to paint the motor much like you'd paint a car, strip, epoxy prime and paint. I think I may use single stage paint (applied with a paint gun) that will allow easier touchup, but still have a bit of a show-off look to it.

Engine color tbd

Nova those are fighting words :p I figured the beak would give it away :D

I got a chance to read through your build thread, good stuff! Oh, and great color choice, seeing it on your car erases any doubt I had about this color looking good on a classic!

well I wasn't shopping for exhaust-

BUT......when I was cruising craigslist trying to help a member find a cheap motor, I stumbled upon a set of tti a body headers with full 3 inch exhaust for about the price of some new cheap headers!

it is too dark for pics, so the cellphone pics the seller sent me will have to do for now.

Merry Moparing
-Chris

Playing around in the garage to day, decided to remove the crank pulley. balancer looks s little crusty- then I notice...HEY where are the timing marks?

Motor has a '65 timing cover on it (which would have had a bolt on pointer) argh. haven't checked TDC to see which balancer is on it, but doesn't matter, going to replace both so I can have the cast in indicators.

I picked up an oil pan ($45!) Here you can see the tti headers were making contact with the road. Thinking about welding a piece of 16ga over the main flat spot.

I was also playing around with potential engine colors. I used an oem mopar color (silver met) but i thought it was too light. I sprayed some black as a base to darken, and it started looking better..still searching.

I check tdc and found the harmonic balancer is correct for a 70+ timing cover. and after hitting it with a wire wheel it doesn't look too bad either.

Looks like I will be giving mancini's a call for a correct timing cover.

I have also been cleaning up the manual steering box. The shaft feels nice and all, but based on the grease stuck to it, there cannot be much left inside, plus the box was still on the car when I was sandblasting- not too bright.

After a bunch of internet research, at least one of the bearing sets and two of the seals are still available if all this needs is a little refresh.

Hey Chris no need for Mancinis with the 70+ timing cover. They are all over the place. I MIGHT have one at home if you need a factory one. Good idea checking balance with true tic. Keep up the good work!! Have a Merry Christmas !

After Christmas Eve dinner, I was discussing the status of the motor with dad, about 10 minutes later he remembers that he may have a timing cover sitting around. We walk out to the driveway, 5 minutes later I have a 70 up timing cover in my hand! Its a little ugly, but I think it will clean up just fine!

Not a whole lot of action this week. Timing cover is cleaning up nice. I ordered the seals for the steering box so I can clean it up and repack the grease. My buddy had a test panel sprayed out with the graphite color I was looking at for the engine. It is so hard to photograph color, especially these pearl/color shift/metallics. but fwiw here is a shot of the graphite in the sun, and a pic of it by the car color (in the garage, florescent light).

Also determined the correct double roller timing set is on the motor (yeah !) but lacks a tensioner, ordered a mopar performance one from ebay, should be here when I get back from a quick new years trip.

I made a rookie mistake :banghead: while upgrading to 73 up suspension, and did not acquire a 73 up center link, so I have a new style pitman and idler, but I cannot finish the front end until I find the "straight" style steering link to use them with.

Thanks for checking in
-Chris

Hi Guys, it has been a little nuts at work, so not much to update- but I met member highflyer who set me up with the missing link for the front suspension.

I also removed the old freeze plugs on the 340, found an extra inside. Half were steel, half were brass and it was certainly time for a change. The rear driverside (behind the tranny) was the worst, and had plenty of junk behind it. I am guessing this is the first time these have been changed outside of an engine bay. I have scrapped and blasted in the passages to avoid any damage to the waterpump.

This was a good week for the engine. I removed the timing set and installed the tensioner. I degreased the intake, waterpump and timing cover. Everything on the intake was originally put in with teflon tape, which I think looks sloppy. I removed fittings and replaced the tape with thread sealant.

Oil pump was R&R to change the pickup from truck to car. I was going to replace the pump but it looks like someone already put in the high volume pump.

I removed the stickers from the oil pan and sanded it down. The lip required some minor hammer and dolly work to get it to flush with the surface of the block.

All machined surfaces were hit with a surface conditioning pad so everything is ready for the fel-pro / sealed power full engine gasket set.

save them plugs you might be able to use them some day lol

I like that color choice.

I took a day off work and played in the garage a little. The oil pan is on with nice new hardware. Next time I think I will spring for the one piece gasket, the 4 piece that came with the felpro gasket kit is a bit of a pain. The bolts are from alloyboltz (they sell on ebay and directly on their website) and are stainless steel allen head. Most of these will be painted with the engine, but I figured with the allen head I would have a chance at removing and replacing bolts without major paint disturbance.

The intake is on, and turns out one of the holes in the head is stripped. Dad is going to set me up with a heli-coil.

Does anyone know why these holes are in the head? casting relief? seems like a crud catcher, thinking about filling it in with something (jb weld, expanding foam?)

Test fitted the 90 degree oil filter holder with the header in place to check for orientation. Looks like no issues with the cast in numbers lined up to the line in the block. Now to figure out how all the gaskets work for this.

Thank you for following along,
-Chris

Since I learned how to paint before anything else, there is always some extra satisfaction in the progress for me when it is with a nice wet coat of some paint (primer in this case)

The paint I ordered was delayed, so I will have have to wait until next week to get the paint on, but the Southern Polyurethanes gray epoxy sure looks sweet!

Thanks bro, it is an adventure learning how to do all this stuff. Not sure I will know what to do with myself when I finally get to drive it!

I have gone to the "dark side." Pictured below new damper (black), gm 1 wire alternator (also black) that will be low mounted on the driver side, and the engine paint has finally arrived!!!!!! :supz:

Great work as always Chris! Keep up the good work.

Thanks Steve!

This morning I painted the engine using PPG's Omni MTX line (single stage) It was a little cool here in California :glasses7: about 65F at 9:30 am when I was getting ready to spray so I ran the propane heater before and after to get it to flash off properly.

The first pic is inside in halogen lighting, the second is in the shade but with ambient sunlight.

I cannot believe how smooth this paint laid out, no orange peel, it looks like glass. I will snap some pics with the real camera and show you up close next time. The color ended up better that expected, with its deep black base and tones of silver metallic is is exactly the look I was going for. I need to pick up the tranny tomorrow to get that prepped for the same treatment.
