James’ 1974 W200 build

Thanks guys. :)

I’ve been driving it here & there on the weekends, beatin’ on it a little. I bounce it off that 6k rev limiter, it comes up quick!!
Truck moves pretty good for having a dump truck of a transmission. Gets sideways too easy.

I got the front E-locker wired in finally, so now it’s a true 4 wheel drive. LOL.

I need to modify my hood to fit, maybe a glass cowl hood would work. We’ll see. Work has been slow so I stopped buyin parts. Lol

I hear the slow work and no money to buy parts. That's when I usually try to get to work on all the small stuff that I don't want to do.. what I want to do is buy expensive shiny parts and put them on lol...

Can I get some pictures of the exhaust just off the headers on each side?

The exhaust pipes from there. I’ll snap shots of what I’m doing on the ‘91. So far on the passenger side, a test fit of a 2-1/2 exhaust pipe that will use a typical auto parts store connector to the Hedman Elite ball flange connector looks like this, uncut pipe shown. I’ll do some trimming later.

The above actually doesn’t touch anything and has a reasonable amount of gap from anything. I’ll center the down turned pipe a little better later.

Both side will use 4 - 90* bends that will go into a single Dynomax “X” muffler, and hen into two turbo mufflers. This is my sons truck. He said he wanted it very quite.
I have two long case “Sound FX” Dynomax mufflers.
Which should be a trick to fit! But they can always be changed out in the future.

I don’t know if I can run it up and over the rear axle, but we will see what’s what as the project progresses.

I’ll say that “X” 2 into 2 Dynomax muffler is pretty cool.

I’m using 2-1/2” into a Y pipe then a single 3” with a flow master super 44 turndown before the axle. I don’t like it, I think the shop did a shitty job and it’s too quiet. The Y pipe I think really quiets things down. I will later change to 3” duals with an H-pipe. But it will be difficult to do on my truck. I will need a builders kit.

There are some other pictures if you go back a few pages.

This is far as I got today…. I pulled a shoulder muscle. It’s rest time for a bit. I also noticed I have some extra bracing? IDK, you seem to have a straight shot from the header back and I have this brace. A vacuum ball “was” mounted there. I just moved out of the way for now. It was directly in front of the header exit. I have no idea what is hooked to it. Just two vacuum lines. There’s a few more vacuum lines that run up and over the transfer case. A third one, a big large, is also attached up there somewhere! IDK what the heck is up with those things!

But! Drivers header in!
Placed the Dynomax X muffler to approximately where it’s going to go.
Tomorrow, Starter. I probably have to loosen the drivers header up. Glad that one was easy. I’ll run the exhaust pipe from the drivers side to the X muffler.

What I did, (& probably an expensive way….) was purchase a bunch of 90* bends from (brand) Summit. 8 in total. 2-1/2 ID adapters and U clamps. I’d like to weld this up later.

I used a 2-1/2 exhaust pipe coupled off the header into a 90* bend pipe going down and then 90* after 90* with couplers to connect to the X muffler. The pipe can be transfer a tad to raise it up as so not to hang down to far and look silly. The X muffler placement is approximate.
but it’s right there, it’ll move very slightly depending on how the driver side comes routed into it.

From there, I do think there is enough room to run the super long mufflers side by side. The exhaust pipe slides right into the mufflers for ease.

I’ll move the long mufflers back as far as practical. This way my son can just cut pipe out if he wants some noise later. I’m not entitled sure how I’ll do tailpipes. Perhaps a pair (fore & aft) 45* bends and something to connect them, like a very tight bent pipe. IDK.

So far, I can run my fingers between every point of the pipe with ease, so there is decent clearance. Nothing will get baked, burnt or rub to vibrate.

Got the flex lines done. Turned out OK. I don’t really like stainless braided hose. I made the hard lines off the booster kind of the opposite of how they should be, I don’t like how the pressure line coming from the pump crosses over, I tried to re-make them but they just weren’t coming out like I hoped. So I left it. It’s good enough.

I cut the brake pushed off the old booster, had a friend chuck it on a lathe, drill and tap to fit the pushrod on the new Hydroboost unit. I was not happy with a universal heim joint with a coupler nut. This way I can use the factory pedal pushrod bolt as well.

You got the old junk soundin pretty good!

You got the old junk soundin pretty good!
Thank your sir! Runs pretty good.

Stops even better than before! The Hydroboost unit works really nice. Great pedal feel, don’t have to mash on the pedal. I’m happy.
-Only thing, the power steering lines get pretty hot, which I’ve read is somewhat normal, but I’m going to add a plate style cooler for the steering system, mounted in front of the radiator. I have plenty of room for it. I think I have one I used a long time ago for my automatic transmission in the barracuda. See how that works. Stay tuned.

Oh yea, mounted the front locker switch just now. Kinda crude, but it works, and it lights up to let me know! Lol
