At least it didn’t blow up on ya. Had a 12 year old battery somehow short itself out and kablamo. Good thing the hood was closed. 6 boxes baking soda $5 in the car wash and $150 for a new battery and back on the road.
Back about 40 years ago when I was a couple years in the mechanic field working at Kmart Auto I had the hood open on a late 70`s Ford truck. When I went to start it the battery blew up and soaked everything under hood and the mechanic next to me. Lucky it was on his back and not his face. The whole battery top was gone and the cables still hooked to the standing plates.

wtf CF? Any idea what happened? Must have been a spark but should have been vented with the hood open.

Similar tale. Back when I was managing the NAPA store in Savage, MN, we had a P/T, evening parts delivery driver (high school kid) who desperately wanted to work his way onto the counter. Good kid. Energetic, enthusiastic, and always wanted to learn. (Kind of ashamed to admit I can't remember his name right now, but we called him "Opie", as his father was a cop.) Anyway, one evening someone carried-in a dead battery for warranty, and NAPA's policy was (and may still be) that all dead batteries had to be charged before they could be tested.

We had a small workbench right behind the rear wall (the one behind the counter) where we did alternator and starter testing, and the battery charger was mounted on the wall there as well.

Somehow Opie got involved with this customer, and he carried the battery back behind the wall, set it on the bench, and hooked it up to the charger....but with reversed polarity. Opie leaned over, threw the switch on the charger....and you can imagine what happened next.

Since he was leaning way from the battery, Opie wasn't hurt, thankfully, as the battery blew "upwards". But it did scare the hell out of him!

And we had quite a mess to clean-up back there.

I was working at a shop my buddy owned and had run a skid steer in so I could compare it with the one I was working on, I was doing a complete overhaul on a similar model. The boss comes in and tries to start the one I had brought in but the battery was dead according to him. Well he hooked up the cables backwards with the charger on full power and then bang. The battery blew up so hard I was twenty feet away and felt the blast and was covered with the mist of battery acid. He ended up going to the hospital to get his eyes and face taken care of.
It’s funny back in 1980 I was working in a shop and there too the shop owner blew up a battery outside. Same thing face full of acid, I guess employees are smarter than the employers.

The only thing I can figure is possibly a bad connection at a corroded cable end causing a spark there because most of the battery damage was on the positive post side of the battery. I will say the sound was so loud my ears were ringing in the drivers seat.

That’s about what I saw when I opened the hood. Can’t tell you why it blew, didn’t see any arcing marks on the posts but what a freaking mess.

One more about batteries, as a kid I had an old GMC 1/2 ton the battery was low on water. I was pumping gas after school at a service station. Thought I’d be nice to my battery so I topped it up with electrolyte, battery puked in 12 hr dead no amount of charging helped. Learned a lesson that day.

Good to know that.
Hey Murray it's warming up.

Got a nasty job coming up, took a speed bump a little quick last summer and thumped the low tube on the header. It cracked the weld on the tube. Can’t get in there to repair it so header has to come out. Well you guys know what has to happen to do that. That’ll teach me.

Driver's side or drinker's side?

Is that using like a pressure washer with sand? I've never tried one.

The company is actually called DUSTLESS BLASTING. if you google it should come up ( U-TUBE). its a turn key business. Similar to a franchise but without the added monthly compensation franchise fees. There are different packages. I think the only catch, is that you have to purchase their media..(it seems)

That's a good business to get into, I think. I hate sand blasting because of all the dust and sand and that looks like a much better way to go.
