New 408 build finally started

I'm thinking RB? You can't put a big block cam in a small block........................
RB =Racer Brown:p:D

No sir. I don’t believe in using them. Last one went 9.74 and lasted over 3 rebuilds. I pulled it to rebuild but my son needed the engine so we pushed our luck, spun a bearing, and broke a rod.

I have never broke a crank or had any crank issues for that matter in the 28 years I have raced. I have them on my 394 and 408. just figured it could not hurt. My machinist liked it and thought it was a good idea so why not. I have broke a rod before too. Nice build either way.

Well I finally had a chance to put my cam in and get it degree’d in. It’s a 108 centerline so I usually advance it 4 degrees and let her rip. Jim recommended 106 because of my lightweight car (2880) and high stall convertor (app 5800) so when I set the Cloyes keyway for 4 degrees advanced and it came in at 105 centerline I figured close enough. He’s anxious to hear how this combo runs so I told him I will let him know in April.

Finally got to use my timing chain I ordered from summit last year for the 360 going in my sons car and summit neglected to tell me it was on backorder. I ended up getting one from another vendor knowing I would need this one soon or later. Pretty nice piece

Has anyone else ever gone to degree in a cam and couldn’t find a lousy key to do the job. Well I have to and like usual with cheap parts I make sure it never happens again. Thank God Chevy and Mopar use the same keys. Lol.

All the better! 327 is a good engine ! For a Chevy.
I agree and the funniest thing about that statement is when you tell people you have a 318, they scoff and ridicule. Punch that 318 out .030 for 322.85 and at .060 over, you get a want now? 327.79 CID engine. And they still scoff and ridicule.
Someone said 4.10’s and a 4spd?
Oh yea!!!!! Oh yea!!!!

Right, just needed a couple of weeks more thought, Love the Cloyes stuff, just freshened my engine after 10 years of pretty hard use, and reused the Cloyes timing set.

Really? Could be, but that's pretty close to the center and if it mattered, you'd have issues when not using an eccentric.

Not saying you're wrong. I fall into the I don't know category. You may very well be correct.
I bought one also, I called Cloyes about it, I asked about not using the eccentric. They said it would be ok, off balance but no problem.

Bad things happen to good parts in this sport sometimes. This must be one of those see-through oil pans. Lol.

Its an Oil Peep Sight ... surely you've used one before . Much more accurate than a dipstick !

JUST DONT TURN !

Call me sick and twisted, but I love to look at pictures of blown up car parts. The more brutal the better!

My buddy used to make clocks out of old busted up aluminum rods. Everyone used to take him their stash. Lol. My son told me to take his pan but I was going to end up fixing this sooner than later. I still have a piece of crap Canton pan in my shop attic that needs fixed too. I was losing oil pressure with it.

So it was a victim of engine carnage ?

My oil pan. Heck ya this was from my last 408 that my son borrowed against my better judgement. I pulled it from my car knowing it needed its fourth rebuild. He fell in love with it and ran the Halloween Classic I loaned it to him for and half the next year before it spun a bearing and broke a rod. The block is on my scrap pile but I guess my buddy wants it.

It ain’t pretty but it won’t leak. I Hope. Lol. Sure not as easy seeing that .023 wire when you are almost 64 and need bifocals to read the instructions on the toilet paper.

I’m not sure how detailed I’m going to get into this because there are a few things I do that’s a little different than the professional engine builders and I really don’t want to explain or defend my reasons for doing so. I’m just an old school hack that has tried a few things over the years and they worked well for me but go against “the book”.

I feel your pain.

I've chased guys out of my building for trying to peek under the cover at one I was putting together. :elmer: And you're taking pictures and showing them to everybody who walks by.
