Roadrunner or Not

Thanks Two7T3Dart!

I talked to a number of old timers who are Mopar Maniacs and they were telling me stories about some special order cars that came from Windsor, Ontario Canada's production facility.

Both said that Canada did things a bit differently. That doesn't mean they didn't put VIN # on cars but that they took special orders.

Naturally, I'm concerned about the lack of the dash tag and VIN plate or I wouldn't have emailed the forum for help with trying to figure out this puzzle.

Let me get with Merle again for details.

Uhhh, obviously there are still some stupid people out there because I did and nope, thank goodness I didn't pay too much for it. Thanks for pointing that out :)

I think even after driving it for a number of years, I'll still be able to get what I paid for it.

In the meantime, I'm trying to find out as much about the car as possible so that I can be transparent when the time comes that I want to sell it.

VIN # on Title and stamped on radiator casing is

RM23F8R245761

so the VIN on your car is also on the rad support? everything i have read says the VIN wasn't put onto the body until 1969. something sounds really strange here...

no matter what it is you're gonna have to get a state issued VIN for that thing. it will throw up major red flags to future buyers if not. and even with a state VIN it will turn a number of people off.

Thanks Clhyer

I ran the VIN on the title with the NMVTIS and it came up as follows:

VIN #RM23F8R245761

Plymouth Belvedere, Satellite Medium Class (Road Runner)
2-door hardtop
V8 318 CID 1-2 BBL "LA"
Built in Windsor, Ontario Canada.

I purchased the car from an elderly man who represented it as a RR. He purchased it from the previous owner shown on my NMVTIS search. He didn't know much about it other than he was having issues running through the gears because of bursitis in his shoulder.

We negotiated a price and then when I went to pick up the car, he tried asking for more $ and when I refused tried to back out of the sale saying he wanted to keep it and covert it over to an automatic. Yikes.

After some discussion, we convinced him to stick to his word. Maybe that was a sign that I shouldn't have bought it. Too late now. Just trying to put the pieces of a puzzle together now.

VIN Decoder says it is a Roadrunner with a 318. That's why I'm confused. The # on the radiator casing has the same prefix as the VIN on the title/paperwork.

Can't make out the numbers under the trunk lid.

Were 318 Road Runners in that year available in Canada?

Sure looks like it from the numbers she posted. News to me !!

Hi Dartnut

Thanks so much for the helpful tips.

Since I have stage IV breast cancer, you're right, it sucks to be me. One of my bucket lists items was to have my own RR. I've been drooling at them for over a year.

Did I need it? Nope. Did I really need to spend the $ on it given my medical bills? Nope Did I want it? Yep, sure did. I found a number of them priced at $40,000 and that just wasn't in my budget.

Came across this beauty on the way back home on a rescue dog transport; fell in love with it; negotiated a price and voila having fun.

My heirs will needs to sort it all out but until then my *** with the stripe on the tail sure is turning some heads out there and I'm having fun doing it.

Sure do wish they would standardize the purchase of a vehicle.

I had no problems registering and getting insurance for this car. Guess we do things differently in Texas.

Thanks Mad Dart

No problem registering, inspecting or insuring it. Weird, huh! Guess they do things differently in Texas.

Yep, it does bother me a bit but nothing like the chemo I went thru. Going to enjoy it for as long as I can.

I would have no problem registering or insuring in Georgia either. In and out in ten minutes.

The VIN on the title and stamped near the radiator both match and start with RM23...

It is NOT a Satellite, the 2nd character "M" stands for Medium trim level, Satellite is "H" for high trim level! Without my books in front of me I can't say for sure, but it could be a Belvedere! Also, I believe that "F" in 1968 = 273!!

I still say check the casting date on the motor, and the stampings on the trans to verify which year they are from! Another thing to check, although it could've been changed, is the casting number on the center section of the rear end, which should be either a 741 or 742 if correct! A 489 case would not have been introduced until 69!

Diana's dart I have been following this thread, glad everything is turning out for the best

You can see both sides of the cyber world, people honestly attempting to help (majority on this board) and some people who just want to stir things up (couple of these people aren’t bad all the time)
Enjoy that cool car and go cruise it

Thanks Clhyer

Appreciate the support and help. I have to admit some of the threads were not at all constructive but then again, I'm also stupid for not having known to check the dash for a Vin Tag but I really do not need people telling me over and over again how stupid I am.

If, in fact, the car is stolen, it should be returned to its rightful owner. I want to do what is right - even if it means I'm out the money I paid for this car. Because, you're right Clhyer - Karma is a *****!

Thanks again Clhyer for the class act and for those of you who have given me some great tips on what to look for. I really appreciate you.

I want to do what's right. I'll call the Tax Assessor to start with and maybe they can direct me.

Thanks so much for the tip!

I did the due diligence as instructed by TXDOT and paid for a NMVTIS multi-state vehichle history report that came up squeaky clean.

Stupid me for trusting someone and not checking for vin plate, vin tags, cross references, production lines and whatever else we're supposed to check before buying a damn classic car.

I've had cops pull up beside me and give me the thumbs up and even rev their engines.

I'm not going to worry about as I've done nothing wrong....stupid maybe, but nothing wrong. My title is clean and clear as is the NMVTIS Multi-State Vehicle History Report for which I paid.

drive the car and enjoy it, its a nice car. some of us get too hung up on the things that make people "anal retentive"! if it is a clone, there are zillions out there that people drive and love!!!!! not every person wants or can even afford an all original # matching car! ##### aren'rt for all of us!

it is illegal to repop a dash vin plate, but if the fender tag is important to you, check out Mart Auto Works in Az. he used to repop the fender tag on original mopar machine, based on info furnished to him by the owner. I give this info to use as you like.

I hate it when the law pulls me over to " see" my car. scares the poop put of me!!!!

Thank you, Diana's Dart, for getting back with us!
If everything on your car checks out - this thread may cause another chapter, or at least some asterisks, to be written in "the book"!!!
I might suggest that you have the vehicle checked over by a good body man with the instructions to look for anything that would indicate body work has been done. Welds nicer than factory, extra welds, reemed out bolt holes, bolt marks where panels have been moved, that sort of thing.
You might have a "1 of 1" that was made in late '68, hence the core support and (maybe) the trunk panel having been stamped.
