So as I mentioned a few days ago, we have purchased some acreage and are going to build our “last” house on it. Full disclosure we have built a house before. Here is some deja vu, male/female communication skills.
Me: Have you got the bidding going on the house?
Her: yes I do.
Translated: we do not have house plans Selected or purchased, hence we have no plans, as a result the contractor is not in possession of said plans, a key factor in the bidding process. As an aside, contractor has not been selected nor has any contractor been contacted.
A true WTF moment for me, then a flood of memories came rushing back to me from the last house we built. I distinctly remember now why I backed out and simply provided brute force as required. I do however get full control on shop detail! Clearly a great trade!

Did you say a 40x100 shop? Indoor range? What all do you have in mind, that's a monster, love it!

Finally some sun!
Damn! Spoke too soon. Is gone.

Got my truck fixed. Got the ecm in today, installed it, test drive, box up core and send it back. Perfect so far.

I had to break out the big tie straps. Those darned tabs that lock the connectors to the ECM broke way too easily. They won't come loose though!

40 by 100 is correct, indoor classroom for traveling instructors and a bunkhouse with kitchen, but range is outdoors. But hey, now ya got me thinking about a long narrow indoor? I just hate to give up one sq in of shop space. That is some seriously high value space!

Go underground for the range. Long trench with a roof over it and low side lights. Roof height only 6’ above grade with 18” side wall and windows. You have the acreage.

Funny you mention that, I just got home from working my shift in an underground 100 meter rifle range. My entire shift I was looking at it trying to figure out ways to reduce construction costs and what I would do differently.

My first thought is a trench and 8’ diameter precast reinforced concrete culvert pipes. Then seal and back fill with 18” of the pipe above grade. Add a roof, side lights and flat floor.

We are in lock step on the culvert idea! I was also looking at making it a root cellar/tornado shelter. Our property is in the tornado alley. Be a nice place to jump into in the event of a twisty! And a fan in the back strong enough to suck your hat off!

You build basements in AK?

The nice thing about the concrete culverts is you can add precast box ends to add space in any direction. The above grade bit is so you can never drown in it...no matter what happens.

Mopar Joe built a house here on a slab. He has a concrete/steel reinforced utility room for tornado action. It looked like Fort Knox!

To much rock, we have to dynamite if you do a basement. Most folks build on slab. I would prefer to have a crawl space but the slab is just way less costly. Plus you don’t go eye to eye with whatever version of snake is in there when you need to be. Only place I like a snake is on a spit. And yes I know there are folks that will passionately tell you about the “good” snakes. I just ain’t met one yet.

Yeah, I lived in Memphis and still have a house there. I know all about the joys of living in tornado alley.

I picked that house based on terrain and placement. In 2010 we dodged 23 tornadoes in 24 hours in that area ranging from F1- F4 and while others lost their roofs and/or second floors on the ridge above us...we didn’t lose a shingle. The Mall 5 miles away was totally destroyed and the shops 2 miles away were also wrecked.

After that, we had a safe room built under the central staircase anchored deeply to the slab with 1/4” steel cladding welded together. Was supposedly designed and guaranteed to withstand a prolonged F5.

Although, I have no idea how you could ever collect on the guarantee if it failed. I just had to trust my engineering knowlege that it seemed like it would do what they claimed.

EF5's are no fun. ANd that photo was on the fringes.

Funny you posted that. I had just checked mine and it is 117/76 with a pulse of 63.

If your doc gives you crap for those numbers, I’m in for trouble in my cardiologist visit next month.

LOL My Metoprolol is working to keep my heart rate low. (almost too low sometimes) I have been watching my salt intake but I have slumped at exercise.

I can't even get a phone appt. with my doctor so had to take another doc on same "team". One of the reasons for the appt. evidently there's a manufacturing issue with one of my meds, had prescription sent "out in town" since the base says they can't get till the end of next month, Walmart says they can't get it at all! Sheeesh!

Make it taller.... same foot print, build the range on the second floor
