Stop in for a cup of coffee

My friend who rents my house in Memphis just texted me. They are expected to get 4-8” of snow tomorrow with a high of 17* and a low tomorrow night of 4*. The cold and snow is expected to continue for days.

That much snow and those kind of cold temps will cripple the city. People will likely die.

They just aren’t equipped for it. No snow plows, no salt trucks and many houses just don't have insulation or heating systems that can keep up. Most of the cars on the road are running half worn Summer tires and very little antifreeze in the cooling system.

When I lived there, one day with 4” of snow and 20* overnight wrecked the city. This is going to be a disaster.

Like snow in about 80% of California effect. Weird, I actually saw a CalTrans truck with a plow attached the other day in Santa Barbara which is right on the beach :realcrazy:. Probably a refugee from the higher elevations , or it's on a snowbird type vacation

It’s like 2/3rds is the country under winter storm watches or warnings the next 4 days. All of Texas even

Yeah, my aunt lives in Texas and said everyone down there freaking out. They’re forecast to get the same 4-8 and be down in the single digits for the next week as well. She said she was at least smart and had her pipes insulted a few years ago just in case, but bets that most dont.

I texted my friend and told him to keep the heat running warmer, make sure the insulated covers I left are on the outside faucets and crack open the attic stair access to keep the attic above freezing. The water heater is in the attic and and there is no insulation in the roof above it and a massive 4’x8’ louvered vent designed to let Summer heat out, not keep Winter heat in. The water heater may just as well be outside for all the protection from the cold it will get.

The house is fully insulated and has a dual heating system, one on each floor. If he keeps the heat set warmer, the system can more than keep up even with the attic access cracked open a few inches.

Get out the Stanley knife and gather up all those pool noodles the kids have. It's time to have a colorful insulating party . Zip ties, color coordination is unnecessary, black goes with everything . Kids can get new noodles when summer rolls around .

Haha pool noodles are cheaper than pipe insulation too!

The weather patterns are crazy this year. I wonder if the lack of air travel is playing a part in this? Many millions of gallons/tons of fuel not being burned and leaving emissions to contribute to cloud formations. The opposite of global warming.

Good point. Greta is getting her wish in a round about fashion :realcrazy:

Well not only that, but when China locked down, there was a satellite image study that showed something like 30-40 percent of the pollution in the world disappeared in a week from the atmosphere

It’s really hard to say. The record high//low temps in Texas are nearly 90 years old...well before any of the modern weather influences were known. Also, the planet has been going through climate changes for billions of years and modern record keeping only goes back 150 years or so.

15,000 years ago, most of Canada and the northern US was covered in a glacier a mile deep. It carved the Great Lakes.

Texas Temperature Records

  • Hottest temperature ever recorded: 120 F, Seymour, northwestern Texas, 8/12/1936
  • Coldest temperature ever recorded: -23 F, Seminole, western Texas, 2/8/1933

I will say this, where I live, precovid there wasn’t a day where you didn’t see a dozen airliners crisscrossing the skies at any given time. Now it’s rare to even see one at any given time. Even the interstate traffic is still lighter than normal, but not like it was in March and April when all you saw was the occasional semi.

And I noticed it was WAY more quiet in the woods when I was hunting. A lot of people don’t realize the ambient noise from airliners and such.

That’s why I question the whole global warming thing. Sure, the planet has warmed over the last several decades, but we have no data passed the mid 1800s to say for sure what effect it will have or if it’s happened before. Even the studies I’ve read on BOTH sides of the issue say that ice core samples dating back tens of thousands of years have conflicting data and results. I’m not saying it doesn’t exist, I’m not saying humans have contributed, but I’m also not saying we have and that it is not a natural cycle

460 miles to go, it's 8pm there already, and the track is still not dry, plus their intermissions. Drivers better put espresso or energy drink of choice in those sippy cups of theirs. :realcrazy:

Hell half the field was wiped out on lap 5

The days after 9/11 the global average temperature rose 3 degrees. A significant change.
There are monitoring stations that measure evaporation rates all over the planet, basically testing the power of the sun. Those theorists referred to the pollution as global dimming. Cleaner air means more solar radiation. Clear skies dont necessarily mean warmer temps.
Less cloud, less heat retained. Lets see what summer has to offer.

Hey gear heads remember it's Valentine's Day. You need to remind the better half how lucky they are to have you, well most of us.
We usually go out for Sunday breakfast, but not today I was told. To cold she said, she's going to get up early and fix breakfast.
Hmm what's her idea of early?? I've been sitting here two hours drinking coffee and waiting...and waiting...and waiting...hmmm.
I know I'll go wake her up and tell her you guys suggested it. She'll forget (wait they never forget) by the time she sees you all.
I am 12 hours ahead of EST. LOL
