8 1/4 out of a 73 duster is 1/2 narrower then the 7 1/4 i removed, witch was great, street and track an 8 1/4 with sure grip enjoyed it self behind my truck, 330 hp for a ton of miles and hard hits at the track, but it would be cool to have an 8 3/4
ANother good choice to replace that 7 1/4.

Enough politics. Don't want the thread to get taken down and I damn sure don't want to clean it up. (all 457,189 posts)

My understanding is that if I went that large on an Early-A I would have to shorten the axle?
My 65 has a rear from a mid 70’s valiant. Bolted in. Its a 7.25, to roll it around. Still hoping to find 8-1/4. Its not a race car.

No, A-body axles are the same width... You would have to get an A-body 8 3/4" axle, or shorten a B or E body one...
Actually, no, A body axles are not the same width. But they are all close enough to interchange.

Ya, I think the early A's were just a little narrower.....
Naw. All the A body 8 3/4s are one length, all the 7 1/4s one length and all the 8 1/4s one length and they aren't all the same. There's a chart floatin around somewhere with all the individual lengths but it's hard to find. The 8 3/4 chart is the easy one and one of THOSE is wrong as all hell. lol

Shhhh....

I have some smoke coming off of the /6..thinking maybe the valve seals... Going to do a compression test after the transmission swap is done...sooooooo LOL

Not easy to find an early 273 kicking around. I'm sticking with the 904 so that will drive any future considerations
How many you want some around her 500 and up. Stay with the slant less conversion issues.

Route 66 Dirt Oval in Joliet is back... They have a team demo derby this weekend... @Unconventional would love it...

7 1/4 i pulled from my 66 is indeed 5/8ths of an inch wider then the
8 1/4 I still have the 7 1/4 here, always here if needed, straight bolt back in, I like the lighter rear, if not abused they do well in these 3000 lb cars I think.

Ya, I think the early A's were just a little narrower.....
73 duster was 5/8ths narrower then my original 7 1/4.

Yeah. Thought about it a bit. I think keeping the car what it is and enjoying it for that.
indeed, and they are awesome, dependable and pushes these early A's great down the hwy

My director in my brain said v8 it and enjoy as long as I put tall gears in it, those 2.87 gears should be perfect with 330 hp I figure

I would think it means you have a left and right hand track with the option of hitting the cars you are racing the laps needed to win :steering:
