I have been outside close to lightening strikes. When you hear and feel the explosion and see the flash you are too close. No hair standing on end though. Good thing!

I've been so close I felt the flash and smelled the burn...too close.

This is more like ... all of the atmosphere departs violently with an odd, frequency that you feel passing through you..

Then an impact of "hard' air.
