I did the same on my 68 GTS ....

What's a good stripping solvent to use?
Paint stripper is no good anymore so I would use a rollock air sander and some bristle brushes, { i think there called} or rollock scratch pads, that's what I used.
Also used a small sand blaster in the tight spots.
Big sand blaster is not a good idea on sheet metal that you want to keep from warping it .

k guys.. couple of things... was cleaning my torsion bars and they are .900 and have pitted rust... this car will do well over 30mph and not worth taking a risk... Are 1.04s too stiff? don't wanna ride like a truck... also any one brand better than the other? i have a hard time trusting new parts :(

Also... was fitting my brakes/lcas and all that... and the caliper bracket and lower ball joint came with this black coating that almost feels powdery but doens't wire wheel off too easy.. any chance this stuff will stop rust or should i hose them down with some black paint?

also i assume it will be much harder to get the torsion bars in if i put in the LCAs first?

Took me some time to remember putting mine together but don't think you can put the torsion bars in without having the lower control arms in.

yeah.. figured... i am done for the day.. but got few things done.. need to get o-rings for the MC pushrod, the mc didn't come with the little rubber seal for the pushrod but won't matter for how much i will drive it.
Gonna just get the PST torsion bars.. 1.03 i'm sure they are all made in the same place anyway. and pst has free shipping :) They have a forum discount?

Cut it out and fabricate a new one and weld it in. What I do is cut it out as best as I can in the area of good sheet metal all around the rust spot. Lay it on a new piece of sheet metal and trace the pattern out.
That's definitely a tough one to rebuild but take your time and sit back and think about it and drink a beer or a shot before you cut it out. Definitely a take the fender off repair from what I see.

Like this?

Pulled off like an old bandaid. A lot of debris underneath as it was loose.

Blue is the existing edge

Plug weld the yellow???

I'd cut it out to the yellow just to get rid of the cancer. slap a new section in and you can over lap it from the back side I think would be best just put some coating on the back over lapping metal to seal it up after your done welding.

Another skill you will learn :) watch some fitzee vids, he gives amazing tips that make a job like that easy. use his cut and butt technique, it saved me soo many hours and headaches. and made every joint match perfect

BTW.. i just had to replace like 30ft of steel in my car, it sucks til you get going, it will be nice when done though :)

I was just thinking, when i started working on my car i would cut out too little metal cause i was soo stressed about every inch i had to remake..
Now that it's all done and i got into it, i'm like.. OHH!! a 1/4" spot of rust.. get the cuttff wheel! ends up kind of fun to see how well you can get it to be once repaired
