In a First, Caltech's Space Solar Power Demonstrator Wirelessly Transmits Power in Space

I met a guy once who was working on an optical laser "pipeline" for electrical energy transport. Pretty amazing
Ok that is the coolest article I have read in a long time. If the news actually reported on that kind of stuff I might entertain going back to watching it. That article was just super Neat! Makes you proud to be a part of the generation sorting that out.

Good morning all, setting here awaiting word on my oldest son that drives a 50 mile drive threw this terrible fog we have here in northeast Arkansas, yes, my head Highschool basketball coach.. been a busy 5 to 6 days here. So glad the single digits are gone, back to 50 degrees this morning, thus the fog

I don't know how, but 3 of my school mates wound up at Cal Tech. They seemed normal enough when I knew them  I guess that desert heat cooked their brains just right so that the effects kicked in when they got to their mid 20s and NASA signed them up

Sounds like I need to go read it myself, good morning

Are their names Sheldon, Leonard and Howard?

We used to deal with Aimes research center when I was at Moffet Field. They were doing a auto flight H-60 and I used to go there on occasion for brainstorming, seriously. They had a awesome cafeteria we were allowed to use. Some pretty funny stories from there with the women rocket scientists trying to pick up a guy in uniform. LOL one guy I worked with went with one he could not handle the lost in space type personality! Lasted one date.

Morning!
2 degrees below freezing. Nice!
And warming up through the week. Unusual but i will take it. Shop becomes easier to heat.
Still need to plow snow. Guess i will get on it first thing.

Mid 30's today. A nice slow melt. No snow moving for me today. I wore myself out yesterday.

How How How?
Basically a daisy chain of giant copper and aluminum wires acting as giant extension cords with transformers. Our power plants, windmills and solar farms here in Indiana, only 3.5 percent stays in Indiana, which powers Indiana fully. The rest is sold and transmitted to such states as New Jersey, Nevada (specifically Las Vegas and Reno) Washington, California. We also supply portions of the East coast.

This past year, due to the contractual requirements, we had to do rolling black outs here to allow the transfer of more power to those states. People here are getting really PO’d about it.

Well gotta go, heading over to Nighthawk custom in Berryville Ar for the day. Gotta see what’s cooking and how the integration of Cooper rifles is going. They bought out Cooper a year or so ago. Just about to start making them, I hope! My buddy will drag me thru the new addition if he is not tied up.

I’d really like to be able to follow the money and figure out who’s driving this electric everything push. They not only want to ban gasoline cars and diesels etc. but they’re wanting to outlaw Natural gas and propane in homes , propane grilles. There’s even talk of banning HVAC units in residential settings. I’ve been going to local BZA meetings for a few months now and they’ve been showing all the instructions being proposed to the National Building code. It’s crazy

How How How?

Before you ask.. yes, I've spent a great deal of time in the past, studying this

Electric grid is 1950s technology. There are 3 interconnects... Eastern, Western and Texas... any generation is "available" within the interconnect. Any power not consumed gets dumped into ground. There's no storage, therefore, auxiliary power generation comes online as required (or offline) ... Spinning spares and cold start facilities are few... almost all step-up or step-down bulk transport transformers are customized to the generation plant... We (the US) do not make transformers domestically any longer.

Edit to add,

Governance and management of the electrical grid is also convoluted.
