Stop in for a cup of coffee

Fine, thank you very much!

How much is a set of used but ok rods and pistons, good ones?

What ones are you asking about?

I would recommend changing the rod bolts out on used rods to be sure that they are not overstretched and break. You can get the bolts for about $60 - $70 and have a machine shop recondition the rods with the new bolts which my local machine shop does for $240... .

I've got an LD4B. I was told early on (here on FABO) that it's a good intake. Now, I don't know much about engines on a theoretical level. What's the deal with dual plane intakes? Longer runners?

The LD4B is the best street intake for a 273/318 as it has the smaller ports to match those heads.

When my son first bought his 71 valiant with a 318 performer intake and Holley carb, we changed it over to a LD4B and Edelbrock carb and it ran much better. Stronger coming off the line with no bog. We didn't do much tuning, pretty much bolt it on, set the idle screws and run it...

It's a much better intake than the edelbrock performer...

'morning, all!

About the pistons, I was just curious how much it would cost to get a decent set of "good" pistons and rods over there. By good I mean non-stock, high performance type of pistons. Say Keith Black like I've got.

Hm. So you're saying it's for the smaller engines. Well, we'll see how my 360 runs with it. It was put there by a reputable engine builder here in Sweden who has since passed away so I can't ask him about it.

Keep in mind that the aftermarket rods do not have oil squirt holes to help oil the bores. The manufacturers claim that they are not necessary.

Stock connecting rods have oil squirt holes. You can have new rod bolts installed which will also require them to recondition the crank bore on the rod as the new bolts may not allow the rod and cap to align correctly after being replaced. It costs a little more than buying a set of aftermarket rods, but for about $40 if you like the extra oiling for the bores from the squirt holes it's worth it.

Keep in mind that you may also have to get the engine rebalanced to compensate for differences in weight from the stock parts.

mornin'...

It's made (the LD4B) to work with the smaller port heads.

But that doesn't mean that it won't run good on the 360. There will be just a small port mis-match, but you can either accept that and run it as is, or you may have it ported to match the heads. A simple gasket match port job for the intake and heads will fix that issue if you are chasing every last HP...

It's just that it may not run as good as the LD340 with the better matched ports to your heads, but it is the next best thing and I would use it if you have it, it's a great intake, and we're only talking a few HP difference between the two.

Note also: the LD4B does not have mounting bosses for the ignition coil like the stock intake & LD340 have, and you will have to find a place to mount your coil.

I would run it, I think it will run very well with it.

If you don't like it, you can always try something else later...

whats your take on a 400 for a street car ....and I mean a stock 4 bbl 400 out of some truck ....I think 72 or 3

I have heard some people say they are smog junkers and yet I have heard a few guys say they run as hard as any 383.

I have never had one so I want to be sure before I buy it.

Yeah, I noticed the lack of mounting bosses ... :protest:

Problem with FABO is you get soooo many ideas and inspiration to do all sorts of things. If you can consider that a problem. :D

Rani, I've always heard that the 383 is better than the 400, However I've never had a 400 to compare. Now.. The hot lick is to use a 440 crank in the 400 and build a nice low block stroker that will fit easier in A bodies, or any body than a 440. A well built stroker can run circles around most 440's as well. I'd like to get my hands on one and build a 470 as a spare.

We had 2 69 Roadrunners. One a green hardtop with a 383, and the other a blue convertible with a 440 4 speed.

I blocked the radiator with some cardboard during the winter so it wouldn't run too cool. I drove it to a town 45 minutes from here and it was fine. When I drove it home, the dam thing overheated less than 2 miles from getting home. The engine was fried and wouldn't run after that.

So I find a 73 Charger parts car that was t-boned by a snow plow and bent the dash, so it was a drive train parts car, with a 400 4 bbl and 8 3/4" 3.91 cure grip and 727 trans. I pulled the 400 out of the Charger and installed it in the Green 69 Roadrunner hardtop. (Then my uncle took the rest of the car to fix one of his Chargers.)

Then we put the green Roadrunner up for sale after a while and took it to a local car show. Dad went there in his blue convertible. So dad is following my brother with the blue convertible on the way home from the show, and they get on it coming off a stop sign.

After he got home, dad says, "That 400 can really go, I had to really get into the 440 to keep up with him off the stop signs..." Unfortunately, it was out in the boonies/sticks, and they weren't able to line up and run each other off a stop light... :burnout:

Dad was also one of those who thought a 400 was just a "smog motor" and couldn't run, but was very impressed when he followed our other Roadrunner that had one. :glasses7:

So yes, a good 400 will run as good or better than a 383, go for it....

I have a 400 sitting in my stash of engines... :D

I mostly bought it for the "perhipials" for when I finally get around to building my 440 with max heads....

I consider 400's like 360's. They are considered smog motors, but if you "massage" them with "the good parts" from a 383 or 340 respectively, it can really wake them up...

You know, get rid of the smog restrictive smog parts and put the better flowing parts on and let them rip! You can surprise many people...

I should have picked that up from you and put it in my carry on LOL.
Hey there Karl !!

Hi Mitch. How are you doing?

I have heard that. Good Morning All!

Hi Mitch. How are you doing?

Hey Tike !! Karl , I've been very busy since I got home. My phone was ringing off the hook with people wanting this or that done. My wife says, I do it to myself. Says I don't know how to say No. I like to stay busy though. I would like to get the GTS under way. :D:D

I'm thinking about going to the Mecum auction again today with my uncle. I forgot my camera in my car yesterday and couldn't take any pictures while I was there. We saw some cool and interesting things there...

There are two cars that he's interested in, the 72 Roadrunner and a 71 Charger 440 6 pack car.

The Roadrunner has some issues, but it is not a 440 like the ad says, we think that it's the original 400. However the guy home wired it himself and the electrical wires run from the firewall, under the intake through the valley pan area, and then connect to the coil and distributor with crimp on electrical fittings. Then there is a nice puddle of oil in the back of the valley pan.

We found a few "wow's" in the paint and stripes.

They just tried to put a paint job on it and did not pay attention to details...

The Charger is much better condition, but is going on the auction block after the Roadrunner (like a few hours). I think the 71 Charger is much better and he should get that one if doesn't go for too much... But we don't know what price range it's going to go for, and he doesn't want to pass on the Roadrunner to find out that the Charger is more than he can spend....

Decisions, decisions...

I told him not to bid too high on the Roadrunner and then see if the Charger is in his price range, then if he wins both, sell the roadrunner and keep the Charger.

My brother may not be able to get there in time for the cars to be auctioned. It would be good to have him there, as he can spot body work from 50 paces... I'm the mechanical guru, he's the body guru in the family...

It would be cool to hang out with both of them today... We don't get to see much of each other lately. It was good to hang out with my uncle yesterday...

An employee said that they are broadcasting it on MSNBC, I may wear my Detroit Red Wings jersey to get all the Blackhawks fans panties in a bunch (you should hear some of their comments...) :poke:

Look for me in my jersey on tv in case they happen to catch me in a shot...

Yep, my time is getting busy lately.

Working on the cars with the older son, the younger son is into motorcycles now and I'm trying to help him with what I can (I'm not a bike guy).

Then my friend, Doug, is trying to fix up a house to move into and wants to start moving in on Nov, but as usual things get delayed... So I'm trying to help him when he needs it so he can try to catch up on the lost time...

Now the engine is in the Valiant, but the kid lost most of the parts. He's not very organized (worse than me) and by the time he gets around to working on things, he's misplaced the parts for it... :banghead:

He lost the rectangular plastic "bushings" and nuts for the steering wheel bracket. The new door switches don't fit the hole in the door jam.

Morning guys! Question. How does everybody mount their coils on the LD4B?
