It's a better design that still meets their goal of having a direct wire from the battery to the alternator.
See if your finger can trace how its better when the engine is running.

Service call.boat trailer popped a wheel bearing.
Get parts, assemble hub and drive 20 miles and see what i got into. Brought my thread files and glad i did. Threads were a little munched. Guy hands me 170 cash and is on his way.
 
Gunner Vet Service. Appt at 3:40 , Get there at 3:35. They make me wait until 4pm to put him in the room. Assistance checks him, 20 more minutes before Vet comes in. Talks Yadadadada, Yup got ear infection...Duh , I knew that. Needs medicine, I'll go get it...Me ...Ok... 20 more minutes. Your all set there Mr Mitch. Ouch! Pets are great but real expensive nowdays. I think it cost me $300 to get my cat back from the vet last time..............................in a decorative tin! Last time for that ol' boy!

300 is entry level. I have a dog, actually two dogs over 5 grand into each of them.
