street racing stories..you know ya do it..

Back in '88, I had my '69 Road Runner 383, 4spd. Dana rear end, and
your mild hi-perf. parts from Super Shops. Holley carb, Mallory ignition,
pretty much anything I caN afford from Sup. Shops.
Anyhow, this guy a lot older than me is a well known gear head,
a tuning, and troubleshooting expert. He owned all makes of muscle
cars, wasn't partial to just one brand.
O.K. This guy was the service manager for the local Chevy dealer
in South Chicago, SEIP Chevrolet to be exact, and he had a brand
new yellow IROC Z a TPI 350 car. The engine and drive train were
all upgraded, LT-1 aluminum heads, aft market chip, whatever GM perf.
offered back in '89.
He pulled on the side of me on 108th & Ewing Ave. at the stop sign,
we look at each other and take off, we were even steven to the next stop
sign at 110th street. I had a Mr. Gasket in line rachet shifter, I was
slammin the gears pedal to the floor!!! I never pulled away and he never
pulled away from me. So, were at the stop sign on 110th street and he
says to me that he beat me!!! I said "Your frickin crazy, lets go
again, you did'nt beat squat". I pulled a lever in my car, to open up
my header dumps. We take off again, same outcome, neck & neck
the whole quarter. I wanted badly to beat him cause this car was supposed to
be a muscle car killer. We got to 112th st. I said lets go down
to toll road frontage road, nice & smooth and no cars. He turned the
corner and that was the end. Word sure traveled fast, about that
young kid, and his 69 BEEP BEEP. God , I miss that car!!

Had a similar experience in My 73 340 duster. I was stationed @ Vandenburg AFB, Ca, and got a 90 day TDY to Whiteman AFB, MO. Just arrived in the area and had not checked in yet. Was driving DD rd from Warrensburg to Whiteman AFB, which is a "hilly" 10 mile long road. Following another (slower)car to the back gate of the base, then a loud, white Camaro comes up on my rear, and tries to pass, but way too much traffic and too many hills. this went on for about 10 minutes. Finally we get to one spot, long down hill, where you can see almost 1 mile or so up the road and he flies around me. Well, I drop 2 gears and pull out right behind him, pull along side of him, make a big production of grabbing a gear and wind it out pulling way ahead. Then grab 4th and pull back in and let off. Brought it back down to almost 60 all the rest of the way there. He never passed me just stayed real close. Got on base and pulled into a parking lot by billeting, him still following. He pulled right behind me, so I got out, thinking "there's gonna be a fight."
First words out of his mouth were "What the h*ll you got IN that thing?" Well of course being a wise guy, I said "Slant 6, stock" and had to laugh. Then I pointed to the stripes and large 340 on the rear quarter of it .
Before I'd left California, I changed out the pumpkin in the 8.75 and had a open 2.94 for the trip in it. While I was in Missouri, I put in my 3.55's back in, and had a blast! K.C.I.R.& Noland Rd. = 1 hour away. Turns out, that was the best base I was stationed @ in 20 years. Good times :headbang: , Nice area, Nice folks! Actually got stationed there for 3 years after that. Now that area around Warrensburg is 3 times as big as when I was there.

A friend of mine had a HEMI in one of his street cars, back in the late 70s. He had a race set up with this 427 chevell , they were headed out of town to where the race was , and my friend procedes to pass the chevell to show him where the race was to be . the chevell drops to 3rd. gear to keep my friend behind, my friend just opened up the second 4 barrell and passed the chevell , and proceded on to where the race was. THE chevell didnt show up. We figured then not to whoop um before the race . LOL

Ive never done much street racin, but i did used to work with a kid with one of those mid 90s Tbirds with the "high teck v8" he thought it was fast, i told him it wasnt. at the time my daily driver was a 92 318 dakota ext cab. nothing special other than over 300k on the odometer and a cold air intake (cheap one). one day we were leaving work and i was like 1/4 mile ahead of him. he got a run on me, almost before i realised it. i decided to show him his car really wasnt fast so i droped it down to 2nd and drove back away from him. both of us were limited at about 110, but i got there quicker lol

Best memory of street racing was probably my first race. August 22nd 2:30 A.M. I was out with my friends cruising around in our cars, I had my 96 Ram out with a fresh exhaust mod (Cutouts) and we were having a great fun cruising up and down the main strip in town. Around I'd say 3 am some d bag with a mid 90's mustang started screwing with us chirping his tires and being just an absolute ***. WEll we (me and my friends) pull into the walmart to get away from him and try to have fun and low and behold who shows up, the asshole now he is taunting us saying that he was the king of the strip and all. We ingnored him still and it wasn't until he gets out and got in our faces that we stood up and told him to f off, for some reason he picked me to be the one whose face he got into asking what I am going to do bout it. after several non civilized sentences were exchanged We lined them up and went for it. the Main stretch is usually deserted at 2-5 am so we were good and when we left the stoplight he had me by like 3-4 lengths then it was 6-7, so I am thinking about letting off and low and behold the v10 of mine found a second wind and she just started eating and eating up the space between us and finally pulled away by a feneder or two and even to this day he wont come out and play. Funny things as well is that his sister is now mw Fiancee. lmao

I owned a 1968 428 Hemi 4 speed/dana Roadrunner. I bought it new in 1968. It was factory rated at 425HP. (Chortle)

The drummer in the band purchased a new 1969 427 Chevy, Dual quads 4 speed/12bolt Chevelle. It was also factory rated at 425 HP. (Chortle, also)

Out of the box, the 427 Chevies were stiff competition for us. With both cars, In stock form, it was not a cake walk for either of us. One wrong move and the other guy wins.
These cars were almost identical when it came to pwer, performance and and straight line speed.

There was no "Sure Thing".

We raced nearly every weekend for about 6 months, and to this day, I don't know who one more street races.I did beat him 4 out of 6 times at the drag strip, though.

The cars in stock configuration were SO close, but his cost nearly $1400.00 more than mine. Both cars were under $5000.00 new, though. ;)
