Swinging for Divorce…

Wire it up with a stand alone oil pressure switch. So the pump cuts off without fuel pressure. And you don't burn it up.

Car is back on all 4s… still no brakes, waiting on lines… but… trailer is here too… I’m taking the car tomorrow to get a quote for bodywork and paint. Had to steal a wheel off of the black car…

Didn’t think about the way the car is in the shop, so I’ll have to move the trailer to turn the car around then load it up on the trailer.

Ps don’t judge me that I have pressure washed the shop this summer.

Car loaded up and drove 1.5hrs away.

The good. The guy sounded like he knew his stuff, with matching body panels, body lines, little mud, where corrections would be needed, attaching panels with new gaskets for prep and using new gaskets when putting the finished car together. Etc. talked about different stuff that I didn’t know anything about? Who knew there were multiple types of pearls?

The bad. The guy made it seem like he was starting his own shop, which I’m all for supporting the new little guy, heck that’s my office as of a couple years ago. But He wanted to paint my car out of his garage, no big deal if the garage allowed for it. Unfortunately his garage was a 1 bay garage, didn’t have good ventilation and would be insanely hard to keep the car clean (wasn’t the cleanest garage) and very little air movement in the garage while I was standing in it besides the slight breeze from having the door open.

He said it would cost around 15k but leave room to go up a bit. Ok no big deal, I was expecting 15-25k for a paint job now days.

I just don’t think it will be the right environment for a 15-20k paint job? Maybe I’m wrong? I will go and look at another place next week.

A plus note is no body panels flew off the car, trunk or hood didn’t fly off and I didn’t lose any parts. Woohoo.

Are paint jobs really 15K for a Dart? What level does that buy? I know a C2 Corvette can be 20-30K depending on body work. One friend spent close to 50K for perfection.
We probably have 16K with a front clip in our C2. That is me taking it to bare glass and doing the minor glass work.
I have maybe $3K in all my metal work.
In September my body shop is going to start with my engine bay and trunk. He will also work any other bumps and bruises. I am guessing 2K for that and 3K for paint. $8K for keeping it the original color and all the bodywork. Add another $1K if it was a color change. I am getting it ready doing all I can to keep the costs down.
In Virginia it can be a two year wait to get in a shop. I hope you can share what you find as you reach out for quotes. My painter and friend (after 3 restoration’s) and claim work has always treated me right. My estimate maybe way off!!!!

Some of the dirtiest paint jobs I have ever seen came out of a high dollar freshly serviced paint booth. Just saying.
Most of the dirt comes from the car.

I don’t doubt that. Some of the worst dental work I have ever seen has come from the “fancy dental offices with the gimmicky marketing.”

I don’t need a perfect shop, a separate garage from the house, 2 car garage with more space would probably make painting a car much less chance of problems.

Me using quality materials with a cleaner space makes it easier for me to do quality dental work.

Everything is expensive. Since purchasing my office 2 years ago prices of everything has gone through the roof. What’s a gallon of paint cost? Anywhere from 4-700 dollars? I also don’t do any body work or metal work.

I think most paint jobs done by an independent shop is going to cost 10-20k depending on what type of paint job you want…. I am hoping for one that makes my wife’s panties drop when she sees it… probably won’t happen but one can only hope.

Never seen a 2 car spray booth. He can clean the little shop. I have great success in a 24x32 shop. It takes a little extra work. I seal the car to the floor.

This is what a real paint booth will get you. Not a 1 car garage with a HF spray gun.

This garage was not that big, maybe this size. But not as nice…

Hell, do it yourself Doc. We'll walk ya through it. Painting is the easy part.

No way! I don’t want to **** it up, I **** up enough stuff already the body work is what I would mess up the most and what would kill a decent paint job. Plus it will take me years to do it.

I like that you’re telling me not to judge a book by its cover and I get that but unfortunately that is life sometimes. Especially with big purchases.

It would be good to have some referrals and example of work. I have people beating down my door from referral.

I'm not a painter, but I helped a friend of mine paint two of my cars in the past. He had a backyard garage with a high wall fan and we would bring in the car a day or two ahead of spraying and hose everything down, including the ceiling, walls, fan, door openings and of course the car and under it, as well as the floor. Always was a good paint job. Concourse, no. Cost: around $600.00, includes paint (Imron), activator, tape, paper wrap and $100.00 to my painter. That was 30 years ago. Times sure have changed.

Anybody can be a bodyman, lay perfect paint.....Google will tell ya everything!!!!

As I have mentioned before, find a member of the local Mopar club and ask. I guess they are still going!??

Back in the 80,s,90's, I had 2 bodyment pout in the NW Mo. sticks, they were self taught, NO spray booth, and they could do flawless work, even with single stage. And like said, IO have seen guys with spray booths that could not make CHIT. And I have seen "bodymen" get a guys $, part out his car, and end up in the Tx. state pen.

They mentioned a guy in buffalo but I don’t see him having a place anymore.
