Today, dollar for dollar, is the 318 faster than the 340 ???

would you agree ?

  • yep, the 318 wins if buying and building for under 3k

I was thinking of finding a 68 Fury VIP 2 door like my dad had in the 70's and putting a 700 HP stroker in it.
Highway gears in the highway star and take on some vetts, stangs, maro's and challengers and eat them up. lol
Pass everything but a gas station !!!! LOL... that would be a fun ride, though!

Hmm here we go again lol

What silicon content forged pistons are you running? What are the clearance number's from pistons to cylinder? What cranking compression? Personally I have never seen a forged piston motor last to 100,000 miles no matter what. Some hyper's yeah and cast yeah but not forged. All of the forged pistons I have ever seen run loose clearances to allow for the expanding and then they beat on the cylinder walls and wear out faster

Most forged pistons for street/strip stuff go in at .004 and that’s not much. Stroke and rod length have much more affect on longevity than a forged piston does. The factory used cast pistons because they are cheap. Not better.

some folks just dont have that much much money in there hole car! to have to spend that much on just the engine would flat run alot outta the hobby all together!! some folks can live happy with what you would consider compromised junk builds and some cant! if i could afford id build erry thing i got along your guide line but in reality i gotta live with in my budget! i know the difference and understand the results of building ether end of the spectrum! telling us we gotta build 15,000 dollar engine for rusted out daily beater or we wrong, might as well just call us plan whitetrash a be done with it....DWB

We are getting nowhere. So you are saying that on a build the budget is so tight another 2 or 3k will run them out of the hobby? That’s unrealistic. Let the car sit a year and save some money. It’s called delayed gratification. I call it 16 year old thinking. Get it done, cut corners and make it run, rather than consider it an investment.

Looking at your picture, Wyoming is a beautiful state. Been all over it. Sheridan, Cody, Yellowstone, all the way to Newcastle. Hey, I used to live 30 miles from Cheyenne. Wait a minute, we lived in Laramie for a couple weeks when Dad was on the dynamite crew for the pipeline!

The more important question is how long do your so called cobble builds last? Mine easily make it 100,000 miles of beating

How is 5000-6000 dollars an expensive build in today’s money? If you are building things today like you did 35 years ago that is a sad thing.

5-6K is stock rebuild territory "done right" in today's market.

Your “well seasoned” block won’t have straight bores, decks or main line. I outlined what I consider to be the bare minimum for machine work to do a rebuild on a core. As RRR pointed out, the prices weren’t even unrealistic or unreasonable. You can do it cheaper but what’s the gain except you have a few more dollars in your pocket? And as the numbers point out, and as I said from the beginning the 3k rebuild number is unrealistic and unreasonable. Doesn’t matter what engine you start with.
`

Again this is your opinion.

Many of us only want a street engine that lasts. I care less if it does 12 seconds. Snappy and fun to drive is all most fokes I know want.

You can put $15,000 in to a 340 and stick it in a $25,000 1970 Duster. While sitting at the light, a new 2021 Camero ZL-1 pulls up next to you. When the light turns green and you punch it with a smile on your face, the Camero driver thinks WTF, he wanted to race, punches it as you are still pulling away and he still beats you to the next light. He has about $65K in his car but it gets 20 MPG for his 650 Horses. He can jump in it and have a nice ride going 500 miles a day in comfort.

I have built a few engines since 1970 that have gone over 100,000 miles pulling heavy Pickup's, Vans and Class A/C motorhomes.

Mic everything out and replace as needed. If the oiled crank spins in the bare block new bearings that measured out good with just my hand on the snout, why line hone it. Most times when I am having the block delux degreased they deck the block a few thou, some more.

So at any rate you spend $1,800 on getting your 318 rebuilt to your specs in machine work , what do pistons cost $400? So with black Friday sales the intake, cam and carb would still be in the $3,000 area corret?

I need to go see if my 318 Duster still runs.. I'm almost convinced at 750 bucks I should only have a block. LOL. Shoot !! After 6 years it still runs as hard as a factory 340 ! I messed up somewhere.... LOL.

Here is a Dart Sport I had a 340 in years ago. She ran mid 13's

correct? A side note I had a good friend who passed away a few years ago. He made his living building race engines on a national level . He wouldn't touch a block if it need line bored or if it had spun a main. For any kind of performance build He also wouldn't touch a block that had core shift out of his specs for any kind of performance build. Maybe and that's a big Maybe a grocery getter build He might use one of those blocks. He also designed all of his own camshaft profiles according to the flow bench numbers after he got done porting.

Here is another..... '70 Duster I had a 340 in, 3.55's sure grip. Never made it to the track, but she was quick !!! And the Dart Sport in front of it...

Well the simple fact is most builds don't need every single bit of machine work. SOme people just like to do it, "because" and that's their choice. I've always erred on the "whatever the minimum is" kinda thinkin cause I've always had to out of necessity. I've run some ridiculously worn bores before. They dingle honed good. LOL Some of those engines ran great, too. A loose HP engine always runs good. Technology has come a long way though with things like modern oils and thin ring packs for even more reduced friction. I say do what you can afford with your engine and just have fun! It's a hobby. It's not worth going to a mental hospital over or making enemies on a car forum.

you said in another post that your engine would cost 10,000 to build and another 5,000 for even better parts,...i can build a engine i can be happy with for less than 3 grand and itll last a long while too...wont be no race car but wont be a turd ether!

Cool,

I have a old 72 Duster Twister no pics right now. And a old 67 valiant 2dr. One will get a 5.2 and the other a 5.9. But they will both be fuel injected

agree.... if somebody doesn't like the rules the OP set in place, simply click off the thread and never go back. That simple. I do it every single day here on FABO - literally. Not my interest, I'm gone.

Right. It's not that hard. I don't agree with every point you make, but I agree with the overall point of the thread, plus, it's a fun thread.

somewhere I must have a picture of my '69 cuda, factory 340 4-speed. Silver with red interior. Just can't find a picture.... I bought it to flip, and that's just what i did.

I was out in the shed today and had to move a huge hunk of metal.Founmy 2.2/2.5
I think my brother still has some turbo stuff from back in the day... and a couple of the MP computers too. They were truly a fun car.

I went out in the shed today looking for a 7 inch round H4 headlight housing. Had to move a huge hunk of steel. Found my 2.2/2.5/Neon 2.0 torque plate. My LA ones are out there somewhere.

Wonder if 448Scamp uses torque plates?

did you read that post before replying and quoting it? he said 8-10k not 5-6k. but even at 5-6k some folks just don't have that money and are ok with the compromise being a 'cheapskate' brings. stop banging on about how it 'should' be done, we all know how it 'should' be done but we can't all afford it and that's it. people do what they can afford and it works for them. jeez!
to summarize, i agree that it 'should' be done how you say. but and it's a big but if the money's not there it's not there.

Show me where I said that.
