Which state to live in?

-
I live in the Big Horn Basin, northwest Wy = Gods country. !00 miles square surrounded by mountains. Not too crowded. No state income tax. 6th largest city in the state, Cody, 50 mi west, 18000 folk. Billings Mt 75 mi north, 100k. Drag strip 25 mi out of there. Only 1/2 M people in the whole state. 4% unemployment. Oil, gas, coal, wind power, tourism, farm and ranch, bentnite mining in north and support businesses for all these.
Yellowstone Park 100 mi west and Yellowtail Natl Rec Area & Wildlife Habitat 30 mi east. Hunt deer, rabbit, coon, coyote out my front door. Elk, moose, bear, mountain lion and wolves in the mountains 1 hour out. Lake or steam fish from the lowlands to the mountains.
Right here we only get 3 1/2 inches of moisture. Depend on mountain snow pack for irrigation, skiing and snowmobiling. Summers can hit 100 on the flats. I do cement work in the winters on the irrigation projects when the canals are dry. Have only missed 6 days of work the last five years because the temp was below 0.
When I was your age I went out and looked at 6 or 7 states and tried the business world. Wyoming and agriculture were good enough for me. By all means go out and look it over while you're young.

Yep!

I've lived in 4 state's....
Md.
Fl.
Va.
Sc.

The best, most prosperous time in my life, was the 17 yrs. in So. Florida. I could probably list 30+ different places thru out this great country I would have liked to try, but life is short, and sometimes you just have to go with what fate brings. I'm sure in time, you'll find the right place and you'll know it when it happens. :thumbrig:

P.S. If things in my life continue as they are, i'll be adding Fiji and Aruba to my list. :D:D:D

I live in lower east Tennessee. No state income tax, hunting, fishing, white water rafting, glider port, hang gliders, climbing, skeet shooting, 3 drag strips (50 to 75 miles away) 2 scca groups, 3 dirt tracks, Road Atlanta(130 miles) hiking, collage football(Knoxville & Chattanooga), Baseball (collage, semi pro).
I have had several chances to move away, but I see no reason why.

Michael

Western NC you get the best of both the Mountains and the southern Hospitality
And Good Southern food

all I know is stay away from Illinois. it's a life vacuum. it sucks the life outta everything it touches

Where are you at in VA, I over there almost weekly. What are the smog regulations like there.
im in martinsville va if youve ever heard of martinsville speedway im only 15 min from it. smog laws what lol there not checking any smog stuff yet at least not around here.we got huntin, fishing, moutains, racing, mopars, the one thing we dont have is jobs my county has had the highest unemployment in the state every year since i think 94. thats why i travel around the country workin nothin here and what is here pays minimum wage.

Colorado ? so overrated ... Just don't pick Oregon it sucks here

This is getting me really excited to move around. In the east I got it down to VA or NC...maybe around the bristol area. In the west I am thinking Wyoming or Navada or Arizona...sorry Colorado but it seems expensive and Arizone and Nevada have drag racing year around right?

I have lived in MD, PA, VA, FL, So.Cal, No.Cal, Or. I spent 4 years travelling the US. Lots of real nice places. I ended up staying in Or and have been here 17 years. I liked Southern Or. a lot more than the Portland area but that's where the Jobs are. Montana is pretty awesome, but I needed to be near the coast. Depends on what you really want in life. I found when my own parameters were closely (outdoors, coast, white water, fishing etc) meet I would have to sacrifice finances.

You may look into New Mexico. The city of Albuquerque is very nice! Like everything is there that you listed. Awesome mopar community there too. The weather is pretty predictable. By that I mean it isnt very bad. It is usually pretty nice and they do get nice winters.
My friend just moved from Circleville,OH to Albuquerque,NM and he loves it!
Hope this helps you out some. Later.

depending on what part of Oregon, coastal - rain. rain. rain. gets to freezing for maybe a week. I don't think it got below 30's this year. Summers are just awesome. 3 months of 75 to 85 and sunny. unfortunately, it rains the rest of the year.... No sales tax either. I guess the best of both worlds would be to live in Vancouver Wa w/no income tax and buy in oregon w/no sales tax.

Idaho is nice also, winters are colder since it is higher elevation. I think I will retire in Montana though just beautiful country..

How bad are the winters in Or.

Don't listen to Rocky J S it really sucks in Oregon beautiful beaches, great snow skiing, mild weather, salmon fishing ,elk and deer hunting , no emission checks its a real dive [-(

Well I am getting out of school in a couple of weeks and have decided that now is a good time to move around. I just can not figure out where to move to. I was thinking somewhere west in the mountains. I figured this would be a great place to ask since people from all over the nation are on here daily, so what are your thoughts? I like hunting, fishing, climbing, hiking...pretty much all outdoors stuff so I am not really wanting to go into a big city.

Texas man Texas, just stay away from Austin, thats the blue part of Texas. I live in Abilene, love it. 2.5 hours away from D/FW metroplex. Far enough away, but close enough if i want to go to the big city. Not much in the way of rock climbing, but good fishing, and hunting. New mexico is a bit of a drive if you want to go climbing.

The big question though is, what do you do for a living? Some jobs determine where you live.

Good luck wherever you end up living, im just partial to my state.

Matt

i would pick a dry area so the cars can live longer.

since i was brought to the US i was planted in Colorado with my adoptive family but if i could pick i would go to Texas or New Mexico bcoz its warmer there, Colorado can be too dang cold sometimes. i like west Texas

there are plenty of dry areas in New mexico and Texas which would be good for the cars and more warmth for for more cruising.

Missouri, and Arkansas might be worth looking at. Hunting and fishing, we've got it. You like mountains, these Ozarks are pretty nice. Pretty close to Kentucky, too.

Just glad you aren't thinking of moving to MA. My opinion it sucks here. I am seriously thinking Las Vegas :)

Come on to VA beach... Great Mopar community, and other stuff too !! No smog check, relaxed gun laws, blah blah ..... !

Been to a few states..seen a few I could call home, family aside, but home is where the heart is..for me it's Fayette County, Texas

I spent a year in Colorado one week. Man was it cold! It might have been pretty, but who could tell under all the snow.
The long and short of it is simple, you gotta know what's best for you.
I like Ohio, except in the urban areas, it's a pretty damn nice place. no one messes with you,and we have CCW and open carry.
I also love the south, not Florida so much, but it's better there in Jan than it is in Ohio.

Lord knows don't come to the south. All the history books talk about the great reconstruction after the civil war.....it's all bullshit. The south remains poor with high unemployment, slow economic growth and crappy paying jobs. I have a friend in Bentonville, Arkansas and he is always talking about how good the economy is there. I would do research and go wherever the strongest economy is.
