1973 Duster

-
So now that I have put my hood on the car for the picture I have noticed that the hood hinges make all kinds of noise when closing and opening.

now I have put a hydralic cylinder (I know it is spelled wrong) on the trunk and it opens and closes nice and quiet, but my hood is out of control with the noise.

Has anyone who might read this have changed out their hood hinge for something a little more modern and quieter and if so where or what did you do. I need ideas before I start to experiment with a spare hinge

Well pin on hoods have very little noise in the hinge. Lol they are a pain though. I would look through a junk yard and see if you can find a modern hinge and gas strut set up that you can make work.

I've been playing with an idea and I think it's going to work. I'll take some pictures in the next few days to show you. I'm not 100% sure it works yet, but I'll be trying it.

Thanks Riddler I am thinking of buying some extra hinges to experiment with but pictures would help.

I could just imagine being at a car show or showing off the car and opening the hood at someone things it is a haunted house with the squeaking noise that it makes. LOL

sorry bad spelling today (and instead of at, Thinks instead of things)

Tim,
I took this Pic 2 weekends ago at a Mopar car show in Chardon, Ohio, There were lots of A bodies but only 2 duster (Bummer) anyway .......I took this pics specifically because of the hood struts used to prop the fiberglass hood...very clean and factory looking. I hope this helps you out.

76orange I have noticed that there are very little Duster's at car shows, yes that is a bummer. I was thinking about hiding the strut rods in the fender perhaps using a small strut rod like they use to do Lambo doors.
The picture does look good and I will probably end up with something like that, but have to consider hiding it first.
I used those rods for my trunk and they work great.

Thanks for the picture

No problem, also I remember reading Tincups build and he was trying the same thing... you might want to check out his build, pg 26 post #637 and pg 27 post #668. Maybe he will respond on this issue or drop him a PM to see if he can save you some time.

Just ordered my 14 inch 6 piston front brake kit. Holly smokes these are going to be big brakes. It really put a stop to my wallet for a while, no pun intended.
I also ordered a Ididit Push to start ignition system, figured I have to find a place on my dash before I finish the body work on it.

Ok Riddler here are the pictures I promised now I have not cleaned up the trunk latch area so it is still rough, And I mean rough.
I tried to have the cylinders horizontal so they would be hidden under the rear deck lid, but the geometry was all wrong and it would not hold up the lid.
now the trunk will pop up a 1/4 inch when opened and with a slight touch the trunk lid pops up by itself.

So here are a couple of pics of test fit number 5-6 not sure but the motor is now sitting on the K-member and it takes about 15 minutes to install the motor from below now just waiting for the paint.

I also threw in some pics of the last storm here. I sat in the wind and cold for an hour to get these pics so I though I would share.

Man those trunk struts looks easy compaired to the hood ones. I'm really hoping I don't have any interference with the fenders.

The motor looks great! I wish I could afford to buy a crate motor. I'll have to settle with taking 2 engines and making a good one out of them.

Just got my 13 inch front wilwood brakes man they are monsters. Now if I only had my k-member in the car I could mount them, but no still waiting for paint.

I got my new struts rods for the hood in and will be working on that in the next few days so hopefully I can come up with something that will look nice and work.

Wife is on Vacation for the week so not much garage time this week. not to mention it has been over 100 every day for the past few weeks.

Tim in this heat next week I would spend more time inside with the A/C and the wifey

Eric,

I am spending less time in the garage, but my wife is mad because my parts are spending more time in the house. LOL

I just tell her she wants to spend more time with me, so I will teach her how to safety wire the brake bolts. Minus the holes in the arm where the wire catches you when it is spinning that is.

You must be baking in Houston?

Am baking in Houston...around 100 degrees every day...high humidity and no rain.....burn ban into effect...no fireworks and plenty of parts in the house and garage....:glasses3:

Ok so it has been Africa hot here for weeks now, but I had to do something to feel like I am making progress so; I got my new brakes and put them all together although my K-member is out of the car. But I had to make sure they fit on the rims that I have. (Boy it would have really stunk if they didn't since already paid for them) but as you can see big rotors and they have plenty of clearance, clarence.

Next I fought the heat and since I got my spare hood hinges and the new struts came in I figured what the heck lets see if I can make it work.

So with my new 12 inch fully extended and 8 inch compressed 120lbs struts from Lift Support Depot I though I would try it out, and guess what it holds in all positions and no longer makes that horrible spring noise. And best of all the fender clears the mount.

Now these are just the test hinges so don't think I am going to use these rusty things. So if someone needs them after I have setup my original one's let me know, minus the struts and mounts of course.

Way to go Tim....I'm glad you got the geometry figured out, nice upgrade very suttle and highy needed. The brakes look killer, I should have gone bigger on mine, (oh well, that leaves something to upgrade). I see you found my wiper motor answers in the technical forum.....I hope to get a wiper motor soon and get some brackets cut out. ( I didn't forget about making a couple extra's) keep up the great work....

Tim thanks for the pics of the trunk and hood supports I will need both of those solutions. The trunk already really doesn't want to stay open with the extra ten pounds of spoiler and motor at the end of the lever. And the hood will have the same problem with the extra weight of the air-grabber and scoop.
Andrew

Andrew for the trunk you could do a double strut system to hold up that monster weight or alot bigger struts, but for the hood that was the strongest strut in that small of a size, but I am sure something could be worked out..

So the struts you have are 12-8" struts? What's the lbs weight of them? Those hinges look like you just took the coil spring out and replaced with a gas strut.

Does the hood lift by itself or do you need to lift the hood but the struts hold it?
