Headers vs. Exhaust Manifolds ~ 'Let The Debate Begin'

~ OK Kustom Headers ~

Set the NHRA Stocker World on it's ear at the 1967 NHRA Indy Nationals.

That is where the Wenzel Brothers {Dave and Ben} crushed everyone with
their 1967 Z-28 Camaro.

'OK Kustom Headers' had given them the 'special' KH-37 Headers with
the 1 3/4" {1.750"} Primaries x 32" Length x 3" Collector.

Their Camaro was running 12.50's in B/Stock and ran rough-shod thru their Class, hammering >
* GTX 440's
* R/T 440's
* 426 Street-Wedges
* Oldsmobile 4-4-2's
* Pontiac GTO's
* Z-28 Camaro's

In 'Stock Class' they ran away from everybody.

They were 3/10's quicker than the other Z-28 Camaro's who were running
Hooker Headers.

Then in 'Stock Eliminator', it was a 'run-n-go' show, as they blazed their
way thru the competition and won the Championship.

Hitting a best of 12.33 @ 114.75 MPH.

"That was flying in 1967."

After the 1967 Indy Nationals, 'OK Kustom Headers' were the headers of
choice for the high-winding small-blocks.

That's quick, for a 302 4 speed Camaro then. Hot Rod worked a 350 4 speed combo hard( Jim McFarland's then, now Vic Edelbrock's. Mid to late '68 article.) ,got somewhere in the low 13's around 103-104 trap speed,IIRC the article correctly. ( late 70's reprint).

LOL

I often wonder how fast my car would go with a set of good headers.

Make a 1/4 pass at 12.00 vs. 11.85 and let me know if you can feel the difference.

Short of the long.. yes you'll feel it.

Agreed.

Adding 15hp to a 13.00/103 mph 3000# car will get you to ~12.80/105ish

It will definitely be noticed.

Douglass Muffler Manufacturing Company
Bell Gardens, California 90202

Located in Central Los Angeles {Los Angeles County}

Originally establish in Alhambra in 1942.

Owner, Howard Douglass started to develop 'Glass-Pack' Mufflers
for the Ford and Mercury 'Gear-Heads'.

In 1949, you could purchase a 'single' Glass-Pack for $7.00.

Also available, were 'Dual-Sets' for the Mercury for $23.00.

In 1956 >

Howard Douglass then 'smartly' moved the Company to San Gabriel,
where there was a 'new' Drag Strip opening.

'San Gabriel Drag Strip' {1956}

Now, there was an abundance of 'Street Machines' looking for
'exhaust rumble' and Horsepower.

But in {1963}, the 'San Gabriel Drag Strip' was forced to close, due
to a need for a 'water passageway'.

No problem for Howard Douglass,

As he then moved to the company to South Central Los Angeles County,
to the town of Bell Gardens.

The Douglass Muffler Mfg., Co. then went to town, developing a
'Performance Exhaust System' for the Chevrolet Corvair, called the
"Corvair Trombones".

I completely disagree. I had one of the brushed velvet T-handles and it was a definite 10+ hp advantage over the "8-ball" that came with the car. I can prove it.
Do not forget flipping the air cleaner lid for that 'Buh-WAHH' sound to intimidate and strike fear into your enemy when running the stock Thermoquad. This is better than horsepower because it makes the enemy afraid of you.

Sweet, got the chrome stem caps, ordering air shocks now. I'll be ready for the track in no time!

Ha Ha, that is 'trickeration'

How about sending a 'screw-driver' thru the bottom of the Mufflers. '2' nice
1/2" Round-Holes, to allow for exhaust breathing, and to 'imitate'
the sound of a rough-idle Camshaft.

Horsepower Gain ..... +5 HP

By the time this list is through we should be pushing 1000+ HP.
Please do not underestimate the torque gains of a chrome radiator cap.:burnout:

Removal of the Windshield Wipers.

Not 'true' Horsepower, but will permit an additional +1 MPH thru the Traps,
due to less wind-resistance.

You see, my Degree in > Physics of Modern Devices is paying off 'big time' now.

Now excuse me, while I get back to work 'Flipping Hamburgers' here at
McDonald's.

Brutini,

What 'OK Kustom Headers' proved on a 1971 Camaro Z-28, with all
stock components.

They gained {+14 Horsepower} and {+21 Ft/Lbs. of Torque}

Gross Horsepower

> The 350 was Factory-rated at 330 HP @ 5600 RPM's.
> Torque was 360 Ft./Lbs. @ 4000 RPM's.

After the Headers were installed they went to 344 HP @ 5500 RPM's
Torque went to 371 Ft./Lbs. @ 3800 RPM's

See the Torque > 11 Ft./Lbs. higher at 200 lower RPM's.

The Horsepower {+ gain} of the Headers, was thru the 'stock' Mufflers.

~ Exhaust Header Tech ~

* More Horsepower and Torque
* Improved Fuel Economy
* 'Amplified' Exhaust Tone
* Reduce Vehicle Weight
* Lower Engine Compartment Temperature
* 'Looks'
* Lower Elapsed Time
* Higher MPH
* Street Set Headers {Horsepower Gain > a minimum of 5 HP and a maximum of 25 HP}

* Worst Road-Block in Performance > Stock Exhaust System

Friday Fred

I'll post that information for you, about 'OK Kustom Headers' and their
contract with General Motors to fabricate the Headers for the
1967 and 1968 Camaro Z-28 {DZ option}.

The units were placed in the trunk of the Z-28 Camaro, or you
could place an order 'Over-the-Counter' at the High-Performance
Parts desk.

~ OK Kustom Headers ~

Produced the famous #KH-37 Headers for both the
{1967 and 1968} Z-28 Camaro's for General Motors.

The Headers were 'specifically' designated for the Z-28 Camaro's
that that were built at the Chevrolet Norwood, Ohio Plant and that
were ordered with the 'special' Option.

The 'KH-37' mark was stamped on the flange.

The Chevrolet Part #'s were
#3927161 {Driver Side}
#3927162 {Passenger Side}

These numbers were stamped on the Header Flange.

What makes these Headers 'rare and valuable', are the units with
the General Motors {Part #} stamping.

Bringing in '5' figures at high-end Swap Meets.

OK Kustom Headers also produced these Headers for their
'standard' Header Catalog.

Part #1303
* Primary Tubes ........ 1 3/4"
* Pipe Lenth ............. 32"
* Collector Size ......... 3"

The 'OK Kustom Headers' {#1303} could be purchased for $125 {Racer Net}
in 1967.
