Folks,

Just found out that my oil pan on my RAM has rusted out and is leaking...

$ 275.00 for the parts, 6-7 hours for the take off and install. Christ.

Just replaced the starter because the power cable going to it rusted out..

Is there a fix for the oil pan or do I bite the bullet...

God love rust....

Too much rust for that...I have a drip now..they didn't clean it just in case...

I am looking for something that we can clean as well as possible and have it bond to the rust.

Thanks

Used this on Aircraft in another career. Worked good, surface didn't have to be dry. Actually worked better if it had fluid on it. But depending on area trying to seal. But I would view it as a temporary repair.

Buy it here

What year of truck and engine? I bought a pan for 5.7 hemi not long ago. Dorman brand seems like it was only 60 or 70$. I see your north of me but seems awful steep.

Dubob, I will pass this along.

Doug, not in the land of rust. I gather that the pan is well priced but the seal is expensive.

I am understanding that this is a chronic problem. I replaced our son's oil pan last year but it was far easier to get to...

I am guessing that it will be better to bight the bullet ?

I had in my mind that you could just clean all off and paint it with some sort of epoxy that binds itself to metal / rust...

It is the labour time that burns me..and the job is too big for me...

Going through this crap too, on my 2000 gmc 3500 7.4
I`m buying a new pan, and pray it will come out without lifting the engine.
Had a dealership replace the oil cooler lines a few months ago. RUST! and/or thin chinese parts.
:protest:

Mine is an '06...really starting to hate rust..maybe Mexican parts ?

If they would just put some paint on the damn things we would`nt have this problem.
The gmc`s driveshaft is so scaley rusty it looks like it will twist in half eventually soon.
Pretty pitifull, My 67 cuda and 68 ford pans look just fine. sign of the times? But my 09 gmc has an aluminum pan, maybe they seen the light?

Went through this same situation years ago on my F150. The new replacement pan was
cheap enough but the labor was killer.

I have brazed many through the years with good luck. Drain the pan leave the plug out and remove the cap on the valve cover to allow pressure to escape. I have had the braze last at least 6 years before leaking again.

Thanks Chryslerfat.....I shall suggest this..

The guys give me a pretty good rate but man, does this sting....there shouldn't be a reason for this....

I thought about that since I used that method for a few holes in the duster..

There cannot be any non-clean metal or the glue will not stick and I wonder about the heat..

I send my stuff to my BIL so I cannot look up the particulars..

Buddy of mine had the same problem on his RAM, it was seeping through it. He drained the oil out, cleaned it up with a degreeser, took a flap disc to it then welded a plate over the entire bottom of the pan, that was almost 3 years ago now and no issues. Btw, he did this while it was still in the truck too.

It is an '06 RAM 1500.

Could you source where you found it ? $ 200 bucks seems excessive.... but there is a 20K + cost difference between trucks from here to you....

Thanks
ian.

and another 35-40 for the gasket... they must be buying in canada...but they do buy from Rock...excellent alternative..

No I wish there was a quicker way to do the swap..

thanks

in the ram the pan is just hangin out in the open, i dont even think you have to lift the engine, thats a 2 hr job tops, including dry time if using right stuff (15 min)

On my 04 4wd I had to raise the engine, pan wouldn't clear k frame and oil pick up otherwise. The pan gasket is a silicone gasket that's bonded to the windage tray as a single unit.

Correct. The garage is using Chrysler's own estimates. If it takes less time, my bill will be lower..

Folks,

Is there a fix for the oil pan or do I bite the bullet...

Just bite the bullet pal. Had to do the same thing on my Dakota. I was worried that a make shift repair wouldn't last, and I would lose all the oil on the highway and blow the engine.
They do make aftermarket pans or at least for the 4.7, which is what I have.

Dan, nice looking steed.

Back years ago, there was an epoxy that you could fix gas tanks with..I was sure there was an equal for oil pans so I checked out Eastwood..but no joy.

Within a year or two I will be moving up to a 2500/3500 ...and for the last couple of years, the truck has seen very little use..it is over 100K so the value of it is rather small even though Chrysler says it is worth 10K...which I doubt..

Yes, I may have to do it and shut up...what gets me is rust just ate my starter as well..darn..

grassy, Thank you for the compliment on my Duster.

As far as this oil pan thing goes, I really hate to say it BUT I, believe it's a Chrysler thing (poor quality metal). A few of my friends have had the same problem be it the Ram or Dakota. The problem with trying to fix your old pan is getting it clean enough so the repair will stick. But I'm almost positive, when you start cleaning it your sure to find more rust and weak spots.
