question on edelbroc vers "mopar" alluminum heads...
i'm putting together a "stock" 340 for my 68 barracuda resto and i'm wondering if anyone has an opinion on which heads produce more hp - edelbroc's or the mopar alluminum heads? both have the same specs - 2.02, 62cc, 1.80. i'm using an exact reproduction of the OEM 68 mopar 4 speed cam for this engine. top end will be holley 750 dp with an edelbroc high rise manifold. also hooker under chasi headers.

any thoughts on this combo would be appreciated.
thanks... jim coster, pittsburgh, pa

same spec..cause they are the same head except one say eddy..and one says mopar...edelbrock makes them..and mopar put a part number on them

buy the one with the best price

ok, here we go....got the car onto the track first time after chasing all the little bugs after my slant to SB swap.....

ET 12.295 @ 109.76 mph, 60ft. time was 1.867. It feels good! Engine combo: 408ci, indy x-heads, comp XR286HR cam, KB356 Pistons (10:1), scat crank / rods. Intake is a performer rpm, carb is a crappy EDE 750 AFB at the moment....i´m pretty happy! Axle ratio is 3.73 with 26x8" hoosier qtp´s. I´m sure i can improve it with some training....

For a "real low buck", this is how I ran 12.90's at 104mph. Here is what I did. Started with a 25.00 dollar 360 out of a 77 dodge truck. Found somebody to bore .030 and hone for 200.00. I put 135.00 into the cheap speed pro pistons. Rings, bearings, gasket and oil pump about 175.00. Then added 200.00 for J heads with 2.02's. 50.00 dollar swap meet cam (284, 484 mopar performance) and lifters. Topped it off with a used 750 dp holley and LD340 intake. They were about 350.00 total. This totals a little over 1100.00. I bet a thermoquad and cast intake would've performed as good and would've put me well under 1000.00.
I had a 10 inch TCI converter, the tranny out of the truck (did NOT rebuild it) and 3.91 gears with 28 inch tire. 74 Dart weighed 3200 lbs. Drove 1 hr to dragway, ran it as I drove it. Pump gas, full exhaust, etc. Ran this combo 4 years without no problems. Then I sold the car.

Update (hopefully the last one in this thread :D ):

See specs higher up in the thread ( http://www.forabodiesonly.com/mopar/showpost.php?p=1544670&postcount=88 )

New best run...launch at 2000, shifting at 6000, going through the traps at 6200 to 6300
60' = 1.652
330' = 4.896
1/8 ET = 7.656
1/8 MPH = 88.70
1000' = 10.052
1/4 ET = 12.080
1/4 MPH = 111.03

Fuel problems all sorted now and found the root of my traction problems (front drag shocks too short and were topping out, replaced with gas-charged stockers that are longer).

It feels a little weak at the top end of each gear and I'm thinking that the Edelbrock springs that came on the heads just aren't strong enough to handle the 1.6 rockers, but not so much that there is noticeable valve float. I'll be swapping the springs out next spring when I change cams.

Congrats and good idea. Have you tried a higher launch RPM?
What is the converters rating?
What does the converter flash at?
The launch RPM seems a tad low, but what do I know?

1979..I was 19...bought my 1st 340 car,69 dart swinger 340 4spd..almost flawless, 3.91's SG with 27x10''slicks,[had to cut fender lips to get clearence but just the inside] homemade traction bars orig rebuilt 340 .030 10.5 comp[supposed]flattops,worked over x heads,factory crank and resized rods with arp bolts..hp hv pump..w/tray,7qt pan,510-300something crane hyd cam,'hemi triple springs'[who knows] Ld340 gasket matched,750dp,dual point mallory,lakewood BH,HAYES purple something pp cl t/o..mr gasket short shifter and headman headers,full bodied stock car with alum slots..was b-5 blue/wht int bucket seats..wht tailstripe..fact ralleye hood..drove it to work everyday with slicks[until it rained] If I recall right it had trouble with spinning but best time was 12.44 open headers, dont remember mph but think it was something like 108-109 maybe more, but it was a blast to drive and I bought it off my older hero Mike Hitt from goodman mo who put it together and I just had to have it back then and I drove the sheit outta it rapped it 7gs regularly didnt know better,never came apart but got me in alot of trouble...Mike played with the suspension and shocks,timing and other things I dont recall all but he is the one that raced it at Mokan dragway in asbury mo and I tore up the streets[was street legal and tagged] and square in neosho mo with it..lost it in my divorce from 1st wife..and yea she's still a hoe...loved that car...it would scream,paid 750 bucs for it back then...seems unbelievable now..he taught me alot

Thanks...I've tried it at 1500, 2k, 2500, and 3k, with 2k giving the best 60' times and 3k being hard to hold in the lights.

Not sure on the converter rating...PTC built this 9.5" converter for my old 318 and it flashes to right around 4400 behind this engine.

I have a 81 Toyota truck yes a Toyota. My dad and I installed a 318 with J head cut to match then another 70 thousands off that. M1 intake 750 modified Holly carb 488 lift purple shaft cam. The block was bored 30 over and the stock crank was turned 10/10. 727 trans with a 10 inch Dacco converter and a set of 488 on a spool. 29/11.00 Goodyear slicks the best it ran was 12.20 @ 110 in the quarter. Oh the truck weigh in at 2300 with fuel and my big butt in the seat.
