"Something in the Orange"

The evening I got to post my bucket of bolts in the 12 second combo thread was a high point.

picked the kids up from daycare, had dinner, swapped my tires and went to the track for test and tune last night. It was a rare 58* with low humidity with that crazy full moon! Anyway I snuck into the 12's on my first run and I still had two baby seats in the car!!!

it's a 373 (340 with the forged SCAT rotating assembly kit; 3.58 stroke 4.070" bore)
comp XE275HL cam .525 231/237@ .50 advertised
Holley 650 with a .50cc pump on the secondary jetted 70in the front and 76 in the back
904 with a Dynamic 9.5 converter
hand ported 587 J heads
Hoosier 275/50 slicks
the last time I weighed in the car and I were 3600#. We've only both got heavier over the last couple years!!

Not long after that my wife got an opportunity back in my old stomping grounds that we couldn't really pass up. Add getting the house ready to sell while raising the babies and time kinda snuck past me. The next thing I know the car is getting hauled off to a storage unit in Poulsbo!

This is where we are now! Time just flying by and the car decorates our garage… but not for long!

The “crud” on the hood in post 139 was from a hole in my PS line. It was jammed in there pretty good. I should have known better.

I was up in Forks last week and had Whiteheads make me a shorter one.-like in 5 minutes!

My front to back brake line looks like some sort of fossil!
I had one rust out and pop open on my first A body a couple dozen years ago. So this one has been on my mind for awhile.

The only rough spot was the clip had been missing. The line itself was in pretty good shape.

If my helper would have let me use the creeper and reach the brake pedal it would have been perfect!

Around the middle of last month my wife and I check into a casino near Shelton for her office Christmas party. They put most everyone up since we all live all around the peninsula. We finally get the kids settled down and cleaned up for diner and she informs me that we have to go get something.... Out in the rain we drag the kids to drive just across the highway to a parking lot adjacent to a gas station. (??)(!) A jeep pulls up and the two drivers jump out like they know each other and she makes me get out in the rain with them (??)(!)

Sometime before hunting season got hot and heavy, maybe late October, I told her about an add I saw on Craigslist for a set of original door cards or panels. (mine are terrible) These looked pretty nice and the price was about right but I was preoccupied and mentioned it at diner one night I think. Anyway, by the time I got back into my everyday life that add was long gone and I forgot all about it.....

She and this guy had been trying to meet up for months and it turned out he was going to be in Shelton the night of her party.... This was my present!

I'll post some pictures next. Im in the middle of a few related projects while the doors are off TBC

My door hinges sag, groan or creek when I open the doors , and rattle going down the road. So I sent them in to get fixed. Here is what I had going on for panels:

The “new to me” cards where from another 68 barracuda that apparently received a nice new set. These required a little TLC as the vinyl had come loose along the bottom and a few clip holes had been damaged.
I used a sliver from western red cedar block. Tight grain, splits thin, real tough, and rot resistant. Then reconstructed the damaged card around the clip hole. I did 4 of these and used a heat gun to straighten the vinyl in a couple spots.

Test fit and they look pretty good! But where is the chrome in the back? Funny that I never noticed. I just purchased a set from another member in NY and they are on the way!

Before I can close the doors back up, there was the issue with the locks…well that they’ve never worked! Key matches the ignition just not engage.

Passenger side needed cleaned and a clip on the lever control. The button on the door handle was coming loose on the driver’s side.

The metal is worn around the mounting screw. It needs replaced but I stuck a “spacer” in there and it seems pretty robust. Everything works now!

Took another shot at getting the gap in the back of the quarter panel closer while the door is off. Pull lever figured out and cards all replaced in the back seat. Waiting on a pair of window crank spacers now! Next up; remove my expired race harness, replace the seat belt and clean up some wires in the dash!

So the interior has never looked better since I’ve known the car so I took some time to straighten out the original seat belts in the back.

I don’t know what it’s called but the area where the door hinges bolt to. I dropped a socket down in there. I spent a couple hours trying to get it out. First I had to extract a large stud that was also in there.

I learned that a magnet, tied to a string that was threaded down from the top and dragged back up was the way to get ‘em out.

found these on the fridge! the hook unscrews so I could use that for weight to get the string down to the bottom, then screw the magnet back on and drag it back up. Voila!

The original maroon interior went into another build and was replaced with black parts from the other cars. Aftermarket race style seats and a nice black
original black back seat was used. The instrument panel was fabricated with ii equus gauges and the door pads were also fabricated. Body panels all reinforced
with "VibStop" and wired for a serious acoustic system Black carpet over a plywood hinged panel cut to accept a bunch of subwoofers. .....
The windows received a very dark tint and a set of American Racing wheels added. The trunk trim, taillights, and headlight bezels, and hood inserts were the lesser
remnants from the sum of the 3 cars.

Very nice. Love the color and tinted windows. Like some of the others have said. It’s your car, build it whatever way you like. When mine is done it will have several incorrect things on it. Most notably the 67 inner fender wells, oops forgot to tell the body shop to cut those stinking nuts off of there! Oh well. Maybe someday I’ll fix it and maybe I won’t. I plan to enjoy mine regardless of what others think. You should too.

Nice to see an old sewing machine like that getting some use! My first ex-wife had a similar one that I had to move from house to house to house probably 8 times... Never once did it actually get used though...

Thanks, my heirs will be the most perturbed that I didn’t at least start with an M code though:)

Mine has been dragged around too but they run and work great! Working with old machines is like using a piece of art and makes the results (or miles driven) more enjoyable I think.

Nothing better. I've been down the show pony road. Not anymore. Do what I want to my car(s) and have fun !!
This car should have a Hemi. Didn't this car come with a hood pad ? Aren't these bolts to be painted ? Crap like that is the most annoying thing at car shows. I'll be watching !

and my favorite... it would be worth more if you restored it to original (318 2bbl car!)

Took it out a couple times that we had sunshine in March. I had a rear shock fail and acquired an electrical gremlin mystery to unravel. I think that I found the new issue (broken ground on my aftermarket voltage meter and a burnt brush assembly in my alternator). Taking the opportunity to do some overdue housecleaning in here since it’s all open. I’ve removed 6 deadhead wires, inspected the universal or welded splice (looks great) updated the wire to the alternator, cleaned up all three bulkhead connections. Cleaned up the fuse box, and found a pinched wire harness. I removed the crushed sections of a couple wires but they seemed ok. I left the others alone fearing that I would add more resistance splicing them. There was a short in the horn circuit too that I’m not sure I’ve rectified yet. We’ll see when I get the last of this back together and powered back up.

Just got back in from taking it up the Wynoochee, back down the Wishkaw, and back up the Chehalis with my daughter. She slept most of the way. It sounds and feels great! I often thought that circuit would be a lot of fun in orange car but must admit it’s better with one that’s much tighter w/ bigger brakes! Save for the farm truck using both lanes at one point, it was still a nice ride.

Replaced the horn relay and the air pump after the aforementioned short burned both up and the horn workED great. Then when I bumped the turn signal lever it honked again …. Grrr
At least I know precisely where that short is now but that’s the second switch I’ve put in there in as many years…. Ground wire off of the relay for now. I wanted to get some miles on it while the sun was shining.

Finally, while buttoning the dash back up I had an epiphany for my crummy dash pad:

Painted original burgundy pad with bulls eye that predates me. I sanded the high spots off, filled the cracks with shoe goo, masked up the interior and shot it all down with undercoat!
Some of these repairs are “temporary” right? It beats staring at that spot I’ve had since 2011 anymore.
