Stop in for a cup of coffee

They said that the water is up as high as the mail boxes in some places...

Then they said that the streets were under water... Duh... If it's up to the mail box, then the street is obviously under water Captain Obvious...
UNLESS the mail boxes are real low. For like Mice and Rats?? Duhh:lol:

They finally fixed my internet connection yesterday... It's been out since Friday noon...

New connection box at the pole and a temp line run from there to the house... Next they have to run the better line and bury it to have it back to what it should be... But at least I'm back on...

Well back when I was young and walked to school and back uphill in the snow, East was on the right and west was on the left of the map - usually.
Whole other side of the state!
You mean West Texas isn't near Houston?
:poke:

cable? DSL?

Well back when I was young and walked to school and back uphill :poke:

I used to walk to school and back uphill both ways, barefoot and in the rain and snow....

And had to go in early at 6 AM to start the fire in the fireplace to warm it up before the others got there.... :poke:

cable? DSL?

Cable internet...

The DSL here is horse ****.... I tried it and dropped them like a bad girlfriend after they couldn't provide the speed close to what they advertised/promised...

I signed up for 12 Mbps and they couldn't maintain that so they dropped me down to 6 Mbps for the same rate... And they still couldn't maintain close to that... Sometimes less than 1 Mbps....

After over 12 service calls and replacing the line from two utility poles to my house they still couldn't provide any kind of reliable connection I went to cable internet and they not only met their advertised speed, they exceeded it... Then tripled it after a while for the same price from 10 Mbps to 30 Mbps...

Never again will I ever use AT&T DSL...

That's good the speed went up but not costs.

I was forced to look into options this year.
12 Mbps would be super fast for DSL. I'm on pretty new copper wiring close the exchange box and 2.8 down /.7 up Mbps is the norm. I know there were higher speed DSL projects but now they don't seem to have much future. It might be good for disaster situations but I dont see that happening.

Looked into going with FIOS. Speeds are very high. For a gamer or TV over internet it might be great. Pricing after introductiory discounts is brutal. Verizon needs to get what they can out of it before 5G internet becomes competitive.

So I tested out a 4G hot spot. Latency can be a little worse than DSL. 39 to over 40 mSeconds, but speeds are around 25 Mbs up and down. That's some help when I need to send off a report with lots of images. Best part is I didn't have to pull CAT 5 wires all through the house. I think 5G is either going to kick wired internet in the teeth or at least make them up their game. But then again I also thought FiOs was going to make Comcast's internet and phone service more competitive. Not here. :(

I will need to add my own back up power for the modem if I switch to a VOIP.
But it at least it will be a real backup; unlike what Verizon offered me - a pack of 12 D cell batteries.
They've insisted switching phone to Fios would be exactly the same as plain old telephone service.
except I have to provide a power outlet for their box,
and I need to stick these batteries in a the backup power device and plug it into the interface box if power goes out.
ps. non-rechargeable D-cells can't be used, and the back deveice can't be left on when there is no outage or it will drain.

AT&T told me that they couldn't maintain the speed because I was at the "end of the line"... Everybody upstream was sucking up the bandwidth...

Not my fault that I was sucking the hind tit... I like cable internet much better... I think that they offer a 100 Mbps package now for a nice price, they sent me a letter telling me that I can upgrade, but I haven't followed through yet... I wanted to catch up on a few bills first and now want to let them get the new line run... I'm on an 8 --- whatever line right now and they are going to run a 11 --- line when they come to bury the new one soon...

Tim might know more.
I think you got a AT&T lackey reading from a script. DSL sends packets on the same wires the analog current carrying voice. The final leg from the exchange should not be shared - it just might be long, old, and oxidized or have bad connections.
Cable service does share the line - almost to the house. If it makes you feel better, everyone suffers when there is high demand. That's one of the complaints with cable here. They need to go to those better lines, whatever they are, if they're planning to be competitive against FIOS and soon or later, 5G.

I did find one NWS weather station nearer Victoria that actually recorded 3 1/4" in one hour yesterday . That's 1/4 of our yearly total. :realcrazy:
