The 70 Duster......

-
I guess I am like most car guys. I get the idea from time to time that..."This is the last one". It just never works out that way! I have several other cars in line that I want to get redone. Even though I have only bought 1 or 2 cars over the last couple of years. I am always looking for cars and parts. Probably would have bought 3-4 other cars since moving but can't justify it since I can't seem to find a body man that will hold their end of the bargain.

The body man working on the Charger started out that he was just going to reskin the top. The previous owner cut a small section of rust (from the vinyl top holding moisture) just above the drivers windshield area. The body man wanted me to advance him some money on the Duster (which he was working on a little at that time). It would have left me only owning a few hundred dollars on the total bill with not even half the work done so I was not comfortable with that. The bodyman asked if I had any small jobs that he could tackle real quick, like patch panels or anything like that. I sent him over to look at my cars and we agreed that he would reskin the Charger roof (about a 2 week job) for $800. Then once we agreed to that, the body man said. "Being the car is so straight why don't we just go ahead and repaint it while I have it." He said it would it would only take about 6-8 weeks to complete. In the grand scheme of things 6-8 weeks was not going to be a big hassle. So I agreed on the Charger paint job. I was not planning for it to go on for over a year. If I would have even thought that was a possibility, I would not have agreed to the Charger deal.

Now for the wife. She likes and enjoys cars and has no problems with them at all. We go to cars shows, swap meets and all that together. Also if it was up to her we would have already sent another car (which see claims as her car since I bought it on her birthday in 05 or 06) out to a full service Mopar only resto shop. I just can't see paying that kind of money on the car. So we have talked about selling off a few cars to purchase a more "high end" car. Only time will tell.

Location....now in the "DFW area" and I will change my profile!

i hate to say this... but if it was me i'd bite the bullet and pull out. get all the pieces back on, take it to storage until you can find another place that has room.

we have one place locally that does resto work. from their website they looked like a big operation. i stopped by to check it out. it's a one man shop, and he has two guys that help him on thursday and friday (they have other jobs, they come there for part time work)

we had a nice long talk. he had an olds 442 on the lift that looks better than the day it was made. he's a perfectionist. i asked him about doing my car,... not a chance. he said he takes about 1 year per car. they take it apart, send the inner body out to get sand blasted. when it comes back they inspect and find every pinhole. they weld in metal, using donor cars if necessary. he does a lot of mercury cougars, those are his specialty, and he said they always have inner rust and need a donor car. so anyways, my car, not a chance... he has 13 cars lined up and since they take a year each... LOL he told me that the olds 442 on the lift (almost done, engine was in it was all painted, interior was done he was dong the trim) had over $80,000 tied up into it. it's a work of love

so really, i dont think that guy will find time for your car. it's probably not a good way to introduce myself telling you this. but if you think about it, down deep inside, you probably already know it wont get done where it sits. if it was local to you, it might be different. you could go over once a week and "help out" or something and at least you would be on his mind.

i dont think suing him would help. or whipping his butt lol. or yelling. i think your best bet is to just pull out as gracefully as possible. again this is only my opinion.

Being the Charger is said to be ready to paint and is "suppose to be" painted next weekend. It would be crazy to pull the plug at this time.

I also understand the high dollar resto shop game. I shopped around for places to take the Duster after the first guy gouged me. I had bids from 8-25k just to paint (not reassemble) and even a "just give me a blank check and we should be able to get it done". I would never consider sending any of the cars that I have to a shop that charged 25k to paint a car. I am not that kind of spender!!! I also had one shop that wanted to take it in as a slow day project for a very reasonable price. However they were a basic insurance shop that was not used to doing any resto work.

As for the body man not finding the time to work on the Duster. Once the Charger gets painted and I get it picked up. If he decides not to work on or finish the Duster. You can bet if I have to pick up the Duster, unfinished. It will be parked at every local car cruise, every car show and driven around on a trailer with a sign to let all the local car guys know that this very well respected, very well know person in the local car community, took $xxxx to complete the job and this is what I got in return. The way I look at it, if he wants to continue painting cars and taking money from other car guys it would certainly be in his best interest to finish the job he chose to take. He is the one that set the price and I did not try to get a better price. He also set the terms and I have held up my end of the deal.

If he continues to not work on the Duster after the Charger is done. You could "tell him a story that you heard about a guy that . . . " did what you mention above and see if he gets the drift:D

Time to uncover this guy in the local car community. You'd be doing someone else a favor instead of them becoming his next victim.

Maybe he had a good reputation but he's done you so wrong it's time for action. You've been way too patient on this dud. Just make sure you pull both cars before he screws with them. I hate these kind of guys. You hear about it all the time with cars and home remodel jobs.

The money you gave him is long gone and spent and now he doesn't have the money to finish. With the high cost of auto paint, I'm sure all the Charger paint delays are because he doesn't have the money for the paint and is stalling because he can't tell you that.

I feel for you- so frustrating.

Well a couple of new updates....

NO NEWS from the painter...so I am guessing that the Charger did not get painted over the weekend as he told me it would. Hopefully have an update this week or maybe next weekend.

To top that off...the house that we had been negotiating on since late November and finally worked it all out around Christmas time. Well it was set to close on Feb 3rd. We had the home inspection, well inspection and septic system inspections done. Everything was fine and made it to the final hurdle. The bank ordered appraisal. Got word today that the appraisal was about 10-12% less than our offer. So looks like we are back to square one there. The appraisal took both realtors by suprise. I was a little suprised considering the new appraisal came in at exactly what the tax appraisal district has listed on the house from 2009. Since that time the current home owner had a shop built on a 60 x 80 slab. The shop contains a fairly large game room, a 10 x 30 storage room and a working shop of about 30 x 60. Anyway, our offer was WAY below what the seller originally listed the house for. In fact they had dropped over $100,000 already before we even looked at the house and put our offer in! And our offer was about 8-10% below their current asking price. All in all the seller would have to take about 32-35% off their original asking price to meet the appraisal. As a seller...man that would be a tough pill to swallow!

But man...I was really, really looking forward to having that shop!! I am gonna miss it even though I never really got to have it. :(

Man that really stinks that you can't get that "shop"! The house . . . is "just" for living in.

in todays market...time to re-negotiate...if you still want it and how bad they want to sell. Bet no one else will be able to pull the pin either with the bank appraisels.
Good Luck!

on your paint and body work...
I'd head right to the peoples court...ie small claims. Get a judgement...attach any assets...and get you stuff back.

the squeeky wheel ...gets the grease

Well, a little more Mopar progress. This time it was for the 71 Dart. Sent my brake booster off to Booster Dewey. Here is the before, after and re-installed pics! Just pardon the dust/dirt. This is my car that was painted back in 2007. It has been sitting in a shop, pretty much ever since then. I have yet to get it washed, waxed and detailed since getting the car back together. Next up, sending the wiper motor off to have it rebuilt and done correctly.

Update on the Charger (said to be painted and delivered back to me by March 11, 2012)
Duster is still sitting untouched since...well forever.

Why would you paint a engine compartment with the heater hoses still attached?????

Why would you paint a engine compartment with the heater hoses still attached?????

lol..."But" the shop took the time to take out the blower motor, master cylinder, and wiper motor... I still have no idea but just glad that it has paint after all this time. Obviously this is not a concours restoration but was suprised by that myself. I had looked for several years for a decent B5 70 Charger to replace one that my Dad sold a LONG time ago. I came across this car and decided to get it to make a driver out of it. It will be far from perfect but should be fun anyway!

Got word from the painter that the Charger is (now) going to be painted Saturday. The paint date, just keeps moving back for some reason. :( Hopefully it will happen this time. When I went up to see the engine compartment paint I was told it would be painted last week.

Well......how about a update on the Charger project...(crappy) text pic.

Thought I would have the Charger back by now. I was planning to go up this week to bring it home. However, I got a text from the painter that he was "completely broke and doesn't have the money to buy the materials to buff it out". He said he would have some money next week to get the materials. Wish this story would just wrap up instead of taking more twists and turns.

i would go up there walk in the shop not saying anything and grab the painter by the nipples and twist as hard as i could maybe that might get him to stop draggin his feet

Times are tough for sure. Still sucks for you. At least it appears he's being honest with you?

Well paint may not be done but the new bumpers are here!
