What brand is your favorite tape measure?

Zippo. Not made anymore but for my line of work (printing) and most things I do day to day it's the real deal. Ebay is my friend on this one and I like to get ones with interesting logo's on them....

I am convinced now that I need a fat Max

For years I was loyal to sears and I only bought craftsman. I even worked at Sears as a younger me in my early 20s so everything was Sears craftsman.

Times are changing and craftsman isn't what it was anymore

Of course these guys are biased because they work for Milwaukee but interesting video.

This one. I bought it new in 1984 and have used the snot out of it for 35 years. If it ever fails, then I will buy a different one since the company that made it went out of business 20 years ago. :D

But it has a lifetime warranty??
There's an old man that sells tachometers at the swap meet and he gives lifetime warranty... He's at least 90 and all I can think is " who's lifetime?!!"

The one that I always seem to find. I have no idea what brand it is. My oldest brother gave me this one about 20? 30? years ago.. I've bought at least 10-15 nice cool ones since then. I've left it out in the rain, went through a washer-dryer cycle at least once. Beat up, but it recoils just fine.
I have no idea where the cool green ones are anymore.

I remember it because that was the year my ‘70 Duster work vehicle was stolen with all my tools in the trunk including my tape measure. I had to replace all the tools including the tape measure. All of my inherited tools from my grandfather were lost in that theft. It is burned into my mind.

Milwaukee & Stanley with BIG numbers, so I can see them.

I think many don't think about it but it is a very important consideration.

I have put a lot of thought into it.

I have been loyal to my craftsman brand for years but the other day i used a Stanley fat max.

Felt pretty good and smooth and looks to be of good quality. I think it's made in USA too.

What do you guys use??

Back when I was a carpenter it was a regular Stanley tape measure. I tried Lufkin, not as good, cracked the tape.
Nowadays, I still have Stanley but also have 4 harbor freight free tape measures in different parts of the house I use.

Any brand that proves I've got an eighteen incher. I can't believe this thread went on this long [he he] with out a remark like that. You guys are slacking!

As a 33 year veteran of the Carpentry trade, I have used a few brands. The Stanley FAT MAX is a winner. I have tried others but the Stanley brand is an excellent product. I often have to extend a tape out to hook a wall or a truss, sometimes in windy conditions. The thicker steel of the FM is far better than any other one that I have used.
What annoys me though.....
UNrelated to the tape measures is how HOME DEPOT seems to play corporate games with the -products that they sell. It probably isn't limited to them, I'll bet other stores do the same.
Here is the scenario as I think it might happen:
ABC company wants to sell it's widgets but knows that their competition at CBA makes a better product. Their sales and marketing department somehow convince Home Depot to carry their line of tools EXCLUSIVELY. THis may be done by offering rock bottom wholesale prices, bribing the HD purchasing agents with junkets, vacations, money, whatever...
THis may be why HD doesn't carry some items that are superior in quality.
DeWalt makes some good stuff but they make an absolutely shitty chalk box. All I see on the shelf there is the DeWalt. To get a Milwaukee or Irwin, both are superior and far more durable, I have to go elsewhere.
Hammers. I use a Stilletto Titanium 14 oz framing hammer. HD refuses to sell them, the'd rather sell hammers that are outdated and heavy. Why?

Used to be die hard Stanley guy. For some reason, they don't like wet concrete. I think mine is a Kamelion brand with double sided printing, back side for shooting elevation with transit. Had it for about 5 years.

This may be a really stupid question, but wouldn't you have to swing a 14 oz titanium hammer twice as hard as a 28 oz hammer to obtain the same amount of force? Does this negate any benefit from having a lighter hammer in the first place?

I only ask because my dad was a carpenter for 35 yrs and swore by his titanium hammer later in his career. I've never asked him why though.
