1963 Dodge Dart 270 Convertible for the Wife

When the weather's cooperative it's nice to be able to shoot a car like that outside. You don't have to worry about lighting and weird shadows. LOL
It’s impossible to reproduce Mother Nature inside. These days I need 10x more light to see things as I use to.

So I sucked it up and fixed the 2 spots that I forgot to fix.... Kaelyn took me to town in the Duster, that I extracted from the garage and washed this morning, to get supplies.

Wet sand with 500 grit and a block to see the low spot then put tape around it to keep the damage to a minimum... apply glaze then sand with 320 till almost there then remove the tape and sand with 500 on a block till perfect. I was about to mix up some reduced epoxy but noticed I still had a splash left over from Friday morning! Perfect. Rolled the tape over on itself so the edge would be soft when I sprayed and pushed it outside before the storm rolled in. Ended up wet sanding the whole car to get anything out and a perfect surface for tomorrows money coats. Wet sanded in the epoxy as well. I could not get a few coat of base on today, which I was hoping for, so the first hour tomorrow will be getting these areas to the same coverage as the rest of the car. Also bought some SEM undercoating for the trunk. This will be painted over eventually.

Lastly we spent 3 hours massaging the fit on the door and fender here... that fender is tweaked but I now know what I can do under the car to get it better if I have to (extra mounting screw to pull the back inward). It is 100% better though, it just sits at almost a perfect gap and I don't need my wire pulling in on the mounting tab anymore.

Oh and the transmission is ready and the bumpers and other parts are rechromed and all the damaged trim (including the headlight rings) are polished and ready for pickup! Can't wait to see it. I have a box of the rest of the parts, I'm just going to let the pro's polish it. I am sure it is 100x better what I can do.

Atta boy, I knew you would!

a better job then dodge ever did on these rides .

No crap. I have used more glaze, filler and high build on this car than the other 2 combined! It is the waviest, most crooked thing I have ever seen..... it's probably gonna look strange being so straight :)

i've done a few a bodies , their never real straight to start with . so great job man , and i'm an old school paint/body guy . i could squirt the whole car at once with the older matls , but todays stuff what a pain , squirt jams n engine compartment and the inner trunk and you have to sand it all again to put down the rest of the paint , then prep for the clear . back in the day , clearing a job was extra . not needed to finish the job off . we cleared custom jobs pearls n metalflates and candy jobs . then sanded it and rubbed it to a mirror , and it didn't come peeling off a few years later . just could not resist adding a couple candy jobs in . that blue duster was squirted ten year prior to blueing the wing for my bud . both a bodies had mud from in end to the other , no spots no blems . this candy apply red in all old school matl , and my candy orange was new type matls , red dart new stuff there too . but the duster is old school ppg enamel met with harden , no clear or buff .

Sweet car extra nice that it's a convertible.

if you can deal with 1/16" of metal trim showing on the top part of the seal. I'd get a hardtop windshield seal and save you a bunch of $$$. 0 One side (on the inside of the car has a little smaller flange). Externally it's the same. Inside the car it's 1/16" difference( I measured a sedan also and they are the same as a hardtop.) I make a few parts for the early A's convertible too if you are in need of some. and am constantly working on other stuff when I get the time and money to R&D my stuff.

kick panels with speakers.

Will those kick panels fit a 66 Dart?

What a morning... Saying "I have to wait for the fog to lift" is something I am not use to but oh what a morning... the light rain yesterday settled the dust and the fog kept the heat down early and it was dead quiet this morning.... Put the old girl outside.... then pushed the car out :)... Lots of cleaning and wiping again... Hit the places where I patched yesterday and after 3 coat where invisible. Having the owner help keep the car tacked off allowed us to put down the base FLAWLESS not one bug or dirt speck. I am struggling why I can't paint the trunk without tiger striping. I think I will spray another coat of base on it to try to get it better. The hood looks great so i don't get the difference...

We put on one coat of Universal clear and we got a big cloth fuzzy on the drivers door. Plus I was struggling getting the gun set to not orange peel... We decided to call it a day with one coat and that was the right answer. The winds kick up around 11 and they did...

Will wet sand the orange peel and couple of problems in the clear in the morning then mist on a fresh base to try to make the trunk not tiger striped and mask off and shoot the teal base on the inside of the doors and rear quarters and try to get 3 clears down before the wind starts.

Is the trunk tiger striping with the clear? You're probably already doing it, but try going side to side 1st coat, and then front to back 2nd coat, then back to side to side 3rd coat. If it still does it....at least you can play tic-tac-toe on it at car shows! Tomorrow is Monday, so I'd call SPI before pulling the trigger again. They are like Farmers Ins....they know a thing or two cause they've seen a thing or 2!

Actually Chad, the guy I bought the Motobase from, messaged me right after I posted on the SPI facebook page. I have the plan of action in the morning.

I was gonna say Your arm probably was getting tired and you were tipping the gun a little getting it heavier on one side. I mean really, you've been working pretty hard at it. LOL
