California DMV ripped me out of my parts.

I don't like this law but I do wonder if their actual main target is idiots dumping oil, anti-freeze, ATF and freon. As much as this state is full of fucked up regulations, why target the guy that parts out old cars? How many of us are there compared to the guys stripping and parting out late model cars?

I thought the same thing but then why not fine the guy for pollution or something, whats the agenda here taking his car?

There is certainly more to the story. ..or the backstory there of.

Do not think he didnt know there was a problem!

These things are - by law - proceeded by letters of notice for infraction, corrective/cease activity time frames, visits/attempted visits by enforcement authoritites, etc. Think about it, even code enforcment is required to send notification of violations 1st and provides weeks of time to comply/show compliance and under due process laws, a violator has the opprotunity to appeal violation, show legit cause/continuance and have his or her day in court.
They are not ever out of the blue (like a drug raid), unless there is a probable cause warrant - to enter said property, to confiscate evidence, etc, all issued by a judge. This would have only been granted after a lengthy undercover investigation that had aquired sufficient evidence to pursue criminal charges.
I can also tell you, they do not do so over 1 car or 1 infraction. ever.
Ignorning the attempted legal process(s), then leads to court action - which then normally involves a Judge, signed documents, lawyers, the PD, etc.
That is how things work, yes even in Calif.

BTW - if they found parts for more than one car (ie his 71 challenger) for sale / had been sold, during their investigation, that very well could cross the threshold for unlicensed wrecking yard. In some states, its as little 3 vehicles per 12 month period.

My guess ( based on yrs of LE experience) I would bet:
Your friend sold your stuff.
Your friend sold alot of car stuff without any proper license, land use permits, salvage yard EPA mandate compliance, state DMV, Highway Patrol & local authority inspection requirements, the list goes on.
All his cars being dirived from junk cars he was buying off craigslist, found abandoned or what have you.
Probably (as in 99% probability) some were missing titles &/or other docs proving ownership & title status. <- this is normally what causes a complaint/code violation to move to a criminal investigation, when it involves vehicles/ vehicle parts.
His back yard/property has the appearnace of a full blown self serve wrecking yard and the neighbors got tired of it.
These things are normally complaint based.
I'd wager he has ignored or refused to come into compliance as requested - several times.
This would result in authorities taking the above action and confiscating everything left, that maybe connected to the illegal activity.
and would be a far cry from some poor bloke selling an old bumper he had, on craigslist...

Somethings not right, missing some info people just dont come in and take your parts car lol My Buddy Dismantled a Valiant with a sawza and put it out in the street for the metal guy to pick it up, your buddy might of had a stolen parts car

Something else is going on here. You don’t need a license to dismantle a vehicle, but...you need the title to be in your name, the plates, and all DMV fees up to date and paid. As for selling the parts, that’s a whole other story, seller’s permit, maybe a business license, and whatever else the State AND County or City requires. Maybe he was dismantling a lot of vehicles, business style. Code Enforcement is on a terror in Southern California. They’re going deep into the codes and writing people up, left and right, for all sorts of things. It’s all about the $’s.
^^^^^^^^^^^^

That so they can give everything to illegals , check what they`ve just passed now !

That's total BS in my book, I've parted out countless cars in Texas & never had a problem. Hopefully when he appears before the judge & explains himself that they will let him off with a warning.

Hey, Texans are way smarter than Californicators , just look at who they elect !!

Any reasonable common sense hard working AMERICAN get the F out of Cal. The disgusting
place should be let go and turned into another "country" not with the USA.

My opinion is cops have "bigger " things to do then follow up on this, but who knows? Did he get a list of parts that were confiscated?
Got a pic of the ticket?
I(as most of us do) have a shitload of loose parts. Who's to say we didnt trade/buy them? Not all parts weren't removed by me/him.
He's made an enemy somewhere.

**** California. Californians have ruined Colorado and Washington, and they have Idaho, Utah, and Wyoming square in their sights. Ruin a place, and then spread, and repeat what you did that ruined the first place. UGH.

Two years ago a friend of mine in California was at a show and shine with his 71 Challenger when a non-resident, unlicensed, uninsured driver lost control and hit three cars at the show., including his. He found a wrecked 71 in North Dakota near where he grew up, bought it, and hauled it to CA. He removed the parts required to fix his car and has been selling a few parts from the remainder since his was fixed. He recently sold a part to someone in Wyoming and that reminded him to contact me about a sway bar and related parts he removed from a 66 Dart years ago to make a drag car. He was going to give them to me if I paid shipping. The plan was that he would take them to Fed Ex next Friday and ship them and let me know the cost. Someone recently turned him in to the California DMV for dismantling a car without a license, probably based on a few items he listed for sale in various places. The cops showed up at his place Monday and confiscated the Challenger he was parting, even though he had the title, and all of the parts for the 66 Dart he had left, including the sway bar. They turned it all over to a licensed dismanteler. He called to tell me the bad news on the sway bar tonight. He now has to pay a fine and appear before a judge for dismantling a car he owned.
Gotta love the laws in California......

Did you ever pay for shipping? If not, how'd you get 'ripped out of your parts?'

Many time the law officer (cop) does not know the law fully, and even the local judge can be totally ignorant to the law. They know parts and pieces of it!
I bet there is a clause in their law, even in Ca, that protects the guy restoring his car????. Maybe their BS starts if someone wants to sell off the parts they do not need?
Total Ca BS!

I'll bet there is more to this story than is being told. I've lived in Calif most of my life and no one has ever bothered me concerning selling car parts. In fact, some of my buyers were policemen.

Out here in western Riverside County, code enforcement has been on a terror. I have buddies who are being written up for disabled vehicles on their properties, several of my neighbors and I were written up for motorhome storage and covers (we formed a group, fought, and won, sort of), the state is killing back yard chickens due to Newcastle Disease, our annual picnic was canceled because the city and parks departments now want fees (Steelers themed picnic which got so popular that we now must pay a $1500 fee to continue it...$0 to $1500 with no explanation), and plenty other stories.

I've lived in CA. all my life, and I agree with you. It's the politics of those in charge. Cancerous, big city ideas continue to spread..
The rest of us 'good folk' don't like it much either.

They've started "task force" stuff to combat this issue. LOL

Any time that happens, people have to justify their existence in the system. I do agree that usually there is some type of complaint that start the ball rolling unless it's in plain view and code enforcement drives by.

One more good reason not to live on the left coast.
Move here to MO you can dismantle all the cars you want, hell just look at all the cars pilled up in some peoples yards.

oh! and its getting worse all the time, Crackedback.
Last year, the city sent out a animal control troll, that beat on doors (instead of ringing the doorbell) causing your dogs to bark and raise cane, then proceeded to run a check on your address for registered animals. So, if you were behind on shots, or other treatments, you got nabbed. BIG BROTHER
Waiting for the Big One, so Ca will slip into the ocean and save the rest of you the grief..

He said he turned it over to his lawer so I'll refrain from further comment until the facts have been presented and he has a ruling from the court.

Many of the things discussed on this thread, can be traced back in history to a time when the North vs the South. A part of this country's darker side of history, caused by one source of government "telling" citizens how to conduct their lives, some of which was justifiable, but a point that was used to invoke more control over individual rights to privacy and confiscation of personal property. I can tell you with full confidence, if examples discussed on this thread were to occur here, the actions of the local citizens would be "VERY VOCAL" and swift. I've lived here since 1984 and found that there were and still are, long held beliefs and social values that this "Florida boy," found hard to deal with. But! One thing I'm glad about living here is; the folks here would not stand for this type of "strong arm tactics."

Well I happen to be one of the ones who like it here in Calif. So here's the deal; instead of making yourself and everyone around you miserable, leave. I promise you you won't be missed. Oh, and by the way, I'm "good folk" as well.

in Washington, we have flim-flam initiative scoflaw who makes his living off of taking donations to promote tax initiatives. 20years ago, he got people all riled up about value-based license tab renewals. He convinced the voters to vote for I-695, which flat-rated renewals to like $50/yr. That meant that the new Mercedes drivers tabs cost about $1000 less, and the average older car driver(like me) might save $50. I'll be damned if it didn't get voted in. That had been a huge source of revenue for the State's general fund. As a result, people had to start paying cost-based fees for everything. At that time, I was going thru a well permitting process and my well fee went from $150 to over $1500!

AHHHHH the LEFT coast land of farce and fiction and socialism. Just cant wait for Arizona Bay.........................:usflag:
