Is it me or does everyone want top dollar for a half assed job these days! I’ve yet to be happy with work I’ve had other people do on my car. I had a wheel alignment done after all the front end components were replaced and they did it with the lower control arms sitting on the bump stops. I paid a glass company way too much money to pop my windshield in to a freshly painted frame with new clips. The job took 20 minutes and cost over $200 and it leaks! After I tow my car three hours home from the body shop I notice they chipped the new paint on both lower corners of the rear window while popping the chrome on. The new tires I had installed had slow leaks, I’ve had defective “new” parts. Anything made in china has been utter garbage. No wonder our economy is in the toilet as everyone wants top buck and takes no pride in their work. I guess if you want it done right you do it yourself.

oh I hear ya.... You would be suprised though as to how many new paint jobs get the first chips when the trim is installed around windows... I got one and the professional was putting it on. but where the top two peices come together the trim snapped down in place and well... the trim "bump" where the peices are stick together hits the edge of the metal and popped a small chunk of paint off.... I about passed out..... its not that guys fault... its just the way the car lines worked out.... future thoughts if I do that again is to line the paint eadge with painters masking tape.... might help.... but ya.....alot of shoddy work for anything and high prices for it... doesnt make sense to me..

Holy crap Mike! How did you happen to notice that?

Sometimes I think this board is the last stronghold of honest people with some integrity left.

People suck nowdays.

I have to agree with the "made in china" comment. They are masters of the rippoff, and must have absolutely no shame.

The window chips may not have been the glassmans fault. If there was any rust or bondo repair around the window,it could have been left a bit to large in spots when finished and caused an interference fit. I've seen this happen. Theere are several "tricks" a good bodyman can use to avoid this.

Probably not that in your case, but seems like you have run across a lot of incompetence.

Here in Canada,we are experiencing a learning curve as boomers retire and young folks are brought up to speed. Problem is,the older guys are retiring faster than new ones can get trained.

This is not an excuse for your misfortune. Someone should be making good for you. Have you logged a complaint?

I have had the center caps on my winter rims for my truck severely bashed in with a hammer because they were "stuck", when I for a tire change. Lucky for the young fellow I didn't really care...just winter beater rims!

666 ....... yikes. I walk by new houses under construction and I would be ashamed to admit I built that in my day. I have no doubt the mortgage on many new houses will out live the house. Everything we build now is disposable trash.

My older son in Dallas, Texas, took his car in to the dealership for servicing. They placed some sort of numbered cone with a magnetic base on his roof for tracking it while in the shop. Once done, they run his car through their automated car wash - yep, without removing the cone.

Dragged it all the way down the roof. Told him his car was ready and didn't say a blasted word about the gouge. Luckily, he saw it and jumped their case. Now, they are providing a rental car for the whole week while they repaint his roof.

8) we are not ALL the stereotypical generation x'er. Everything I have is because I have worked for it....Including the duster. Ive had a job since I was old enough to have one. Worked at a gas station all through high school so that i could pay my bills and have any left over money to put into the duster project. Build it on my own for the most part....thanks to fabo tech support. Now im going to tech school so that I can make a better living for my family. Then again I was not raised like alot of kids around me were. I am by no means perfect but Lazy? absolutly not......but I understand were your coming from

I think that it was the way I was raised, If I was not honest I could not remember how to be myself, And yes!! like needsaresto said

I agree, that is why I DO EVERYTHING MYSELF!!!!!!! The only problem whit that is that you must have as many tools as I do. Which takes up about 3/4 of my garage. And my car is outside in the front yard. With a car cover over it. I made the mistake back in '89 to have this "Great custom painting shop" prep, and paint my 47,000 original mile '67 barracuda fastback. I got it back about 6 months later with a bucket full of my door handles, mirrors, emblems, and various trim pieces. Orange peel, runs from hell, numerous fish eye's, and rust bubbles along with 4 very obvious digs that were not there before I brought it to them. I also got handed a bill for $4,000. It was right then that I started to learn how to paint my own cars. Went to school for it. And have been painting cars, boats, heavy equipment, and custom homes and such. I just recently did all my own body work on my '65 barracuda as well. I've never done much actual body work over the years though until recently. But I only had to go out and buy a porta-power and a few packages of sand paper. I already had all of the other equipment to do it all. Out of everything I own as far as tools, I still probably dont have even $4,000 into them. Maybe. So as far as I see it, it is TOTALLY worth buying up all of the equipment and doing it all yourself. At least then, you are getting something for your money. And learning something very useful for the future.

That's why I do all my own body and paint, feels better to put those first chips and scratches on personally :-D

I just do all my own stuff... every time I try to get someone else do work for me it is never as I envisioned.

If I do a repair or paint my car then the only person I can blame is myself if things do not come out as planned.

Bought an 2003 Ram Quad cab last March. In almost show room condition for the age of the truck. I got a flat tire and didn't realize until I got to the tire shop that the lock wrench wasn't there. Off to the Dodge dealer to get the tire fixed. $250.00 later and 3 damaged rims and they are denying it. Oh well off to court we may go.

just curious 72swinger340 .... is this the dealership fault or whos fault are you saying it is ? and is the "lockwrench" one for locking lug nuts ??

I try to do every thing I can my self. It is hard to pay some one for a job I know I could of done way better my self.

I was raised to do my best for everyone. Today I fixed a trailer for a man that goes to church with me. Whoever built it welded the tounge to a 1/8 inch thick piece of angle with no support. I placed a tounge brace under thr trailer and welded it to the tounge and put him a spare tire bracket and safty chains on his trailer. I charged him $15.00 to pay for materials. He bout fell out said I expected at least $50.00. I told him no just dont forget about it. I may need a favor one day. I think unless it is your business and you support your family with your shop why not help people and return favors. You never know when you may need one.

the problem with most shops is, thier overhead is way over head. so they have to pump jobs out at a rate that also lets them make a living for themselves and thier employees.(no attention to detail) they don't have time. if you can't do it yourself, which i strongly recommend, find the guy that has a full time job, other than the work you need done, and does the kind of work you need done.(i hope that made sence) chances are pretty good that he or she does it cause they love it. and if they can make an extra buck or two, all the better for them. it may take longer but, they pay close attention to detail.

yep I here ya read about worst body job ever i posted.a68postcar i cant beleive what you just said.you think I got what i paid for.Go back to school

More than once I've said "if I wanted a crappy job, I would have done it myself" when I paid a "professional" to do something. I do most stuff myself now.

The first time you do something, it can take a long time, be frustrating, and sometimes isn't the best job. But the second time (and thereafter) usually goes fine.

I'm doing my first engine build, and my first car paint job right now. I'm sure you all will be seeing some posts for help.

You can't teach a work ethic! What happened to American quality and pride? It all stems from a lack of accountability...

snake, you should have done it yourself. i do these cars cause i love them. but i dont know of anyone who does the kind of job you are talkin about for that kind of money that aint some kind of hack. i'm doing a 79 t/a bandit car right now and the guy has almost 1500.00 in materials. if you know anything about body at all you know that black is the hardest color in the world to do. i set a price at the start of the job, the dude pays half and i don't expect the remainder till he is happy. your car is b5 apparently(hides alot of stuff), but if i was doing the job, it would not be screwed up. but i also tell all of my customers that we are friends when i start, and we are going to be friends when i'm done. if you have a problem with the car give me the opportunity to make it right before you go talking crap. it there is a problem with the body work i will fix it on my dime, if the finish has a problem, because i use the best materials that money can buy, the manufacturer WILL stand behind thier product. period. i run a small body shop on the side. i don't do it to make a living. i have a real job(not body or paint) that i pay my bills with. so i dont have the overhead. and i never will. it takes care of itself. or i wouldn't do it. NOR WOULD MY WIFE ALLOW IT. and i certainly would never, ever air my problems in an open forum. i full on understand your position, and wish that every body shop was in my position, it would never come to this. but if you are serious about your car, YOU will fix it and, learn from it. in 30 years of doing this i've had one customer come back mad. i ate the job and redid the car at my expense. he left happy and i felt better too.20 YEARS LATER WE ARE STILL FRIENDS. you may have gotten screwed, but you learned something too. i guarantee it. incompetence is everywhere, there is no escaping that, you should have brought it to me. i'd have done it right, once. and been done. it takes me some where in the neighborhood of 4 or 5 months to do one. how long did he have your car 2, 3 weeks maybe?
