Life's most embarrassing car moments

-
I took my 73 Dart Sport 340 4 speed to the track when I first bought it.Pulled some slicks out of the trunk and put them on.When I was on my 4th pass,I launched it in 1st gear, then hit second and heard something break(thought it was a u-joint)as I was pulling over to the side of the track....bu-bump,I look out the side to see my axel and tire rolling bye!LOL.I had snapped an axel in the stock 8 1/4 with 3.21.I was lucky to have no damage to the 1/4 panel.Got it home and swapped in an 8 3/4.Has been fine ever since. Was pretty embarrassed with it happening in front of other racers.=D>

I got a lesson on why not to use wheel adapters. On main st. in the middle of the day I'm goin' about 30 in my '67 hemi cuda, I start to hear/feel a vibration , a few seconds latter the front of the car jumps up around 3 feet and crashes down, I'm like,WTF, and then there goes my front tire rolling straight down main for about 200 feet. Thats the only time I ever had one of my hotrods strand me.

The day we got the 4-speed installed in the Dart I took it for a test drive around the block. Not being used to the old school stick I stalled it at an intersection to applause from a large group of guys gathered around a bike path. :(

Or the time I left the gas cap on the trunk and I continued driving down Woodward Avenue, wondering why the guy behind me kept honking.

Or the time I was at the track and the trunk opened during a hard launch.

Or the time it caught on fire in the garage.

Changed plugs, cap and rotor, and wires on my 73 Satellite, wanted to start it to make sure things were O.K. No keys, searched for an hour, left on top of the inner fender-shut them under the hood and it was the last place I looked.

Had the hood fly open on a 70 Maverick I had. Of course it had to be in traffic too. Had a front pump seal in 75 Mustang Mach 1 decide to puke in a left hand turn lane in heavy traffic back when I lived in Chicago, that sucked, lol. Car wouldn't budge and was billowing ATF smoke.

I had a 78 Monte Carlo years back.. The thing was a beast snow, rain, mud.. it went through everything.. I was heading home one night from work and hit a big bump.. It tore the 3 day old exhaust off from the headers back.. it wrapped the exhaust around the back axle.. I had to get a buddy to show up with a sawsall for us to cut out the exhaust.

Car shown in avatar had a 318 with a mild build, no aftermarket gauges. After leaving work, I was riding down the highway with a loud exhaust and BOOM!!!!! Engine blows up in the middle of the highway leaving a James Bond smoke screen and I coast to a stop several hundred feet later; oil everywhere and 2 holes made their presence known through the headers. Ghetto tow truck driver said my car was only worth 2K because of it's age. New tranny/rear and fresh paint job and excellent interior.

Later, I found the oil pump had unbolted and hit the crank thereby blasting 2 holes in the block. Who ever heard of a 318 blowing up??
Now: quality temp and oil pressure gauges.

Changed the oil and didn't notice that the old oil filter gasket was still on the car when I put the new filter on. Boy what a mess that made.

Back in '81 i bought a '71 Demon 318 3 speed std. on the floor.
I had it for a few months and one night it snowed about 6'' so i decided that it would be fun to burn some doughnuts in the college parking lot. I had lotsa fun.
After doing this for about 1/2 hour i decided to go home.
I pulled out of the parking lot and the car died.
The car wouldn't turn over with the key, so i opened the hood only to find the battery jammed in between the fan and the crank pulley all shredded.
I used the tire iron to unjam it and then i bump started it and drove home.
I had to pressure wash the whole engine compartment the next day and buy a new battery.
Lesson learned?
Don't use a bungee cord to hold the battery in......lol
(Hey i was only 19, so you gotta cut me some slack!)

Back in High school there was only one exit to the senior parking lot, and around 600 seniors. I ran out of gas waiting in line to leave.
Fortunately, my 63 dart 3 on the tree had a good battery so I put it in third gear and used the starter to get out of the way of everyone else.

It gets worse the older you get. Heck I go to the garage to do some thing or get some thing and forget what I went there for (LOL)

BRB I Need to go fix some thing :notworth:

Oh and don't ever use regular lug nuts on an aluminum mag.

Or down shift to slow down on an icy road with a limited slip rear.

picks don`t lie or do they?? nov 1993 had to work on saturday so working out of town there was nothing to do but have a few beers with the guys. Well sat morning came allfully soon (bad water). I stopped at a local deli for coffee and some film for the camera, when I got to the counter to pay I looked out the window and my truck was gone,Iasked the lady if she saw anyone move it no she said HUMMM I thought the guys were messing with me,now keep in mind it`s dark out there,so i walked around the whole building and no truck, went to the hwy looked both ways no truck. Well I figured someone stole it,O did I forget to mention I left the truck running?? called the cops to report it stolen they said it would be awhile. man I gotta get to work. It was starting to get light out side and I wandered out to the street and looked again and low and behold look at what I found!!!well. i guess I didn`t get it park, cause It backed out of the deli parking lot out in 3 traffic lanes around hit the curb ,bounced and put the bumper onto the gaurd rail. tow bill!!!!!!!!!
JUST another adventure

I got to ask where was that photo taken? The area looks familiar to me.

A few months back I bought a nice Dart from somebody here. I've been working on it regularly. A real solidly built car. I've put 2500miles on it and am absloutely confident in it. Built 318, manual 904, 3.55 Sure Grip
I drive to Atco one night for test and tune.
Been there many times with other vehicles... Traction is usually never bad. I'm in the second pair of the night. I light the pre-stage, check the guages, bring it up to around 1800rpm and light the second light. I mash it and it spins horribly, tach hits 6000 in a heartbeat....I'm not liften', it's only a 318.
I push 2nd to stop the wheelspin and it still spinning bad. I lift just as it really starts getting out of shape. Check the mirror as I roll down the track, no apparent leakage, just two nasty stripes. It's running fine.
Get almost all the way to the turnaround and coolant sprays everywhere!
And yes, I had coolant, not water in it...
Track stopped for 45minutes for cleanup...
That's when I became THAT guy!

:eek:ops:

The year was 1987 i was 18 talked dad into cosigning loan for a 67 Firebird i just had to have.Car was great for 2 months than started dating this girl that i swore my car hated.Reason i say this it would after six months of dating our relationship was on the out and it seamed i walked her more times when we were fighting due to car would not start. This was probably just a fluke, but it was like clock work.Well there was this girl i worked with rather hot but flaky.and after walking back from girl friends house I get back to my car to find her sitting on my hood. She was just begging me to take her out.To which i replied i would love to but car wont start. She says if car starts i have to take her where ever she wanted .Side note she hated my girl friend and vise versa. Now i was so sure that my car would not start i even said if it starts i would buy breakfast and would give her a ride around all weekend and even let her drive ....Dohhh..Needless to say she walked over put key in ignition and ill be damned if car didn't start.Well after that it got back to my girl friend about me letting her drive my car and breakfast and spending the weekend paying for my bet and damage was done i now had an ex-girl friend. All was good as i had new girl friend for the summer and a car that never broke down.Still have no idea why it would not start ...but my story is CAR HATED GIRLFRIEND>>>

OLO, And they think smart cars are new.

Invited all my friends to the track to see me run. Made it to the semi finals and was at the starting line when it shut down. In all the excitement with friends I forgot to put a gallon in the fuel cell. They thought I broke till I put gas in to load it on the trailer.Ten years later they still rib me. Or the time I poured trans fluid, about a quart to lube the cylinders in a motor that had been sitting. Pulled the plugs and leaned in over the fender and jumped the solenoid. Four or five revolutions later my buds are laughing like hell at me over my atf shower.

had a 73 mustang that I bought for $125 from the used car lot I worked at 2barrel 302
a friend pulled up to me at a red light in his dads 75 caddy, the light turned green and we both floor it, when we got to the next light my friend looked over and said "lets never mention this again" both cars were so tired and slow we nearly died of embarrassment, I think a moped could have beat us that day
