My home inspection of Speedmaster heads

-
Just looking at mine last night i noticed that the rockers they sell won't clear the springs without a correction kit

I seem to recall in one of these SM threads a pic being posted of the rocker hitting the retainer.
Of course it was dismissed.

I find it amusing how the fact that SM is selling rockers that don’t fit their own heads is barely mentioned.
If the same thing was happening with someone like Edelbrock, they’d be getting railed for it.

As for the seals...... the set of assembled heads I had here had seals that didn’t fit the guides properly.
They “looked” fine...... they fit poorly.
If you buy these heads, and the seals fit good on yours..... then run them as is.
The set I had here would have allowed for oil consumption through the guides...... so they were replaced.

And there will be the occasional head like this........
I don’t think you’re going to “lap” that out.....

The B3 kit? Here’s the thing. If your on here and you don’t use it you get brow beat to death. You get the “Your an idiot” “Your leaving power in the table” “Your geometry is wrong” “Your stuff is gonna bend brake warp or just simply **** a cheeseburger out a valve” & etc.... it’ll never end until you get beat up enough to get a B3 kit.
Do you NEED the kit? No
Would it help the engine to have the kit? Yes
What if you change cams? You probably need a new B3 set up. Add that to the probable cost of new pushrods.

Not quite true.

If your rockers are hitting the springs and the springs aren't 1.625 or bigger, the geometry is wrong.

The correct fix is use the B3 Kit, mill off the stands and use offset shafts and stands (way more expensive than the B3 Kit to do the exact same thing). Or, you can use a grinder or a fly cutter and make the spring pocket in the rocker bigger.

The last option should never be done.

So that's what you get. I can tell you there are many engines out there running with junk geometry. Doesn't make it right.

I just love the way these conversations continuously twist and twist and twist until someone's believing this is about someone's fix kit.. do we need to start a different conversation about geometry fix kit or has that been covered? No one said it was a bad thing no one said anything bad about the person who invented it. I said it seemed a little or a lot expensive for some shims but at the time had no idea that this was a one-off custom build for each person's heads and admitted it but did not call the persons product inferior or not necessary or whatever.. this is the last time I will defend myself no matter how much people want to twist this into something that it's not...
This Thread is totally budget-minded heads with a budget-minded once-over..
That's it finished stick a fork in it...
Its ok man, still look forward to hanging out but I fully expect you to be wearing the official speedmaster jacket lol

For all the post on this particular page, the title of the thread and video is "My Home Inspection of Speedmaster Heads". Key words are "Home Inspection".
  • ProMaxx, Edelbrock, Trick Flow, SM should all be inspected before use, correct?
Lots of ways to skin a cat. I showed mine. Please add your ways of how you inspect heads at home. I started doing my own heads over 25 years ago and never had a failure. I'm confident if I have a problem with my SM heads, it won't be due to my failed inspection. :)
I will say my trickflows had some chips in a couple ports (could have been cleaned without disassembly) and the valve spring heights were off by about .010-.015 which seems to be common. It was enough to put me on the edge of enough seat pressure with my cam so I shimmed a few up, oh and I did not like the shims they used so I bought some from pac springs with a smaller inner diameter for the guide bosses. I think it is pretty much established by now but no one should just bolt on a set of heads without checking them.

Oh I'll be quotin this post for sure!...

That you should absolutely check any heads before putting them on an engine?, good you are learning grasshopper. And I like it that whenever you talk about trickflows the price keeps going up lol, pretty soon they will be 4k heads and I can sell mine and make a cool $2,200!.

Do you have a better picture of that issue?
To me it looks like the bowl is suspended in out space under the seat.
Maybe just some arrows that will turn the picture around for me.

Yeah I think he explained that all through the video that this was just do it yourself kind of check. We all know you're a badass machinist and check everything down to its last nuance but this isn't what this is about... no one's trying to set the world on fire with a set of Speedmaster heads.. and when you're going for Budget why spend trick flow money on them? No one is recommending these heads for an extreme all-out effort.. I don't think anyone's putting them on a high-mileage car that they're going to put twelve thousand miles a year on... At $700 a set you could probably buy a new set every four-five years and not have a problem LOL just put ten bucks away a month...

Yes you are ,who you foolin.lol
You wouldn't be buying heads, you'd be flow benching your old ones to know what you were or weren't doing right.
I know if I'm buying am alloy heads..I'm porting them heavily. These arent exotic....but they are definitely a few blocks away from stock.
You like to down play it, huh, don't want to look goofy if you dont go faster? Lol poke poke

Honestly I already have much more than $820 in my stock heads.. I've already kick myself in the butt for not knowing that I could have bought these heads for $820 but quite possibly that wasn't possible 5 years ago.. or I was at a machine shop listening to all the hype...
I'm happy and comfortable with where I'm at what I have and where I'm going..
I did all the porting I wanted to on my stock heads.. I've cut my roll bar back out, I've put heavy steel cop wheels on, I've had my cam re ground with much less duration and much less lift.. surprisingly enough to you probably my ego is still intact...

Does that disagree button hurt your little feelers.. well grab your little plastic shovels and your little plastic pail and go make your little sand castles at a different end of the beach..lol..
