So I found the Richard petty retirement edition and I found this now too!

Good morning. Back to the regular routine but it was a good family vacation, going to the Gilmore Museum is always a huge bonus. Airplane had a fluid leak but thank God they fixed it so I didn't get stuck in Michigan.
 
So after being left on the roadside in the Demon on Sunday fiasco...I changed to a 750 Holley vacuum secondary carb from my son's rat rod for the short term. It ran pretty well, didn't die at all but still has quite a stumble under load off idle. Seems like an accelerator pump issue/adjustment/cc issue. Bogged when attempting a burn out and a stumble if just idling and a sharp wide open throttle stab. It made the whole trip that it didn't make on Sunday and transision driving down the road was really good. I can't believe how hot the hood and fender tops get from the fenderwell headers. Almost too hot to touch. There is no insulation on the hood but maybe there should be? As for the fenders, with no inner fenders, I thought there would be enough air flow to keep them cool but no way. Header wrap or ???? thoughts??
Get the off idle worked out first.
First find out how much transfer slot is showing at hot idle. That will be clue number one.
If its out of range, then adjust timing or whatever is needed. Obviously not going to drill holes in a borrowed carb.
Holley/Demon Carb stumble
Once everything is hot, get in the garage or shade and under the hood.
Manually open the throttles very slowly. If there's a hesitation then its in the idle circuit.
Take it for a drive and very slowly open the throttle from a dead stop. Same deal, any hesitation or flatness and its the idle circuit.
Simplest reversible test is stick some wires into each of the primary air bleeds. IIRC 3310-3 had .076" primary air bleeds. Stick a wire in each with enough diameter to reduce the area to the equivalent of .073"
Yes some math required. LOL
if you don;t have piano wire or such, strip some stranded lectrical wires.
In any case, stick it in the air bleed, run it up over the choke horn and down under the air cleaner gasket.

I do think it is in the accelerator pump set up and/or squirter. Slowly accelerating, either in park and reving or driving, it works great. It is only when stabbing the throttle is there a bog/hesitation. That bog/hesitation happens both idling hot and when driving. Stab to WOT and it may die or hesitate, then goes like a bat out of hell. When I attempted a burnout last night with this carb, it died the first time that I abruptly went to WOT. The second time, it hesitated, then lit them up wonderfully. This tells me accelerator pump isn't sending enough fuel until the booster can pick up fuel naturally. So, my thought is not enough fuel or not a long enough shot of fuel to cover that transition.

As for the borrowed carb, I bought it used and rebuilt it for my son's car and it worked well on my rat rod so it was the easiest to try. I do also have a 750 Edelbrock I could try but I don't see where that will help.

FYI, running around the neighborhood with open headers and doing burnouts in the driveway hasn't gotten me any ill views from the neighbors..........yet.

Ha, I suppose so. I had one follow me and stop at the end of the driveway with the windows down in his car with the family on board. Big smiles and thumbs up, so I have one on my side....or now he knows where I live and will pay for what I have done!!!
 
I will check out the pump cam when I get home or when my Son wakes up, will send him out. Something tells me it is white and in the top hole, which I think will bring it in sooner than the lower hole.

Fuel was brand new on Sunday, 93 octane no ethanol..
 
Not much early lift in the white.
My 3310-3 came with green.
Here's Holleys from the catalog. Not sure what they tested it on. It makes a difference because theres a couple different arms, etc.
If you switch from white to green you will probably have to slightly bend the arm to make good contact.

Hey guys. How much vacuum is the engine pulling? That is where I start on a tune dial in.....It is lean on tip in, lean all the time? Timing? As Matt stated, just not enough squirt at the right time?

best way to clean out a fuel tank without dropping it from car?
