    Alternator, pulleys & brackets

I bought this alternator from a forum member for an engine project that never happened. So I can't verify what it is or what it fits. But it is supposed to be a single-pulley (no power steering) setup for a small-block. Never tested. Asking $70 plus shipping from northern WV.

    Small block stroker windage tray

I'm using an 8-qt Milodon oil pan on my 340/416 build. Should I use a windage tray; and will the Milodon tray clear the stroker crank? Or can I just space the tray far enough away from the crank to clear it? Thanks!

    Piston ring end gap

The more I read about it, the more confused I get. On my 4.070 bore small block, using Ross pistons and Sealed Power rings, Ross recommends .004" gap/inch of bore for the top ring, and more for the 2nd ring. Sealed Power recommends .0045"/inch for the top ring, and less for the second ring...

    Oil galley plug question

FABO'ers: Working on my 340 build this evening, finally. Just when I think I understand the oil system/flow path, I see something I don't understand. On the front of the block, near the end of the passenger-side oil galley, is an oil passage that goes down to the number 1 main. The small cup...

    What sealant for freeze plugs?

I've seen both Permatex Red and brown gasket sealer recommended for freeze plug installation. What should I use? Thanks!

Where to get oil diverter plug

FABO'ers: Regarding the small cup plug that goes in the vertical oil passage that diverts the oil through the oil filter. I don't think my plug kit came with one. Where can I get one? Thanks.

    Need SB engine cradle dimensions

Could somebody measure the approximate distance between the supports on their engine cradle that will fit a small block, and also how tall the supports are? I need to build a cradle and my block is at the machine shop. Thanks!

    Engine assembly in unheated shop

Got a weird question for y'all. I will most likely be assembling my engine this fall/winter in an unheated shop. I use a propane heater to make it tolerable when it is very cold out, but, I never achieve "room temperature". What, if any, effect would this have on the assembly? I'm thinking...

    Drivetrain efficiency

What would be an approximate % for driveline losses for an automatic and for a manual transmission? That is, difference between rear-wheel HP and HP at the crank. Thanks!

    Breaking in flat tappet cam

FABO'ers: I know Comp Cams recommends an initial run-in without the inner spring on all their cams using dual springs. Is it really necessary on a small cam? I plan on using the XS282S (244/[email protected], .52/.54 lift) and the recommended 986 springs (322 lbs/inch). Thanks.

    Head bolts or studs?

Is there any big disadvantage to using head studs on a small block? Can you get the heads on/off with the engine in the car? Say, 70-72 Duster with no power brakes? Thanks!

    I-Beam or H-Beam

FABO'ers, What would you recommend for my build? 340/416, Eagle forged crank, Ross dish pistons, now looking at ported J-heads and small roller mechanical cam, like Comps XR280R, 242/248*@.050;.57/.576. May switch to Eddy heads down the road; planning on 9.8:1 with the J-head; 10.5:1 with...

Recommendations for small block roller rockers

I was hoping to score some good, cheap roller rockers at Carlisle (I don't ask for much!) but it wasn't to be. So if I end up buying new parts, any experience with the Hughes Engines rockers; or the Comp Cams Pro Magnums? They are about the same price. Thanks!

    Even more Carlisle pics

These are all Demons and then some random pics of the F-bodies and rock crawling. I have a buddy that may restore a Demon that is in his family, that is why we took all the Demon pics, to encourage him. F-bodies because I used to have an orange '77 Roadrunner like the one in the pic...

    Cam selection for 340 stroker

From what I have read and heard, the stroker engines can use more camshaft duration than the stock-stroke engines. The one book I have says for a given camshaft duration in a stock-stroke engine, the stroker engine will have similar idle and power characterstics with about 6* more duration. In...

Stamped letter on bottom of block

I've been cleaning up my '72 340 block while waiting for my pistons to come in before sending it to the machine shop. I noticed 8 stamped letters; some A's and B's and one C; on the bottom of the block - where the oil pan would be bolted. The letters roughly correspond to each cylinder. Any...

    Intake manifold recommendations

Any favorite intakes? I figure I'll need a single-plane manifold for my planned build, 340/416 with cam around 280*/.525". Any experience with the Mopar Performance single plane manifold? I'm getting my hit list ready for Carlisle, hoping to score some good used parts. Thanks.

    Slant 6 to 340 swap

I thought his topic would have been done to death, but I can't find a thread about it. What would need to be changed to convert an original slant 6 car to small-block V8? Motor mounts, transmission, rear end, front springs, radiator? The reason I'm asking is, all along I figured I'd buy...

    Tubing passenger side oil galley

I'm planning to use a mechanical flat-tappet cam in my 340/416 build. LA-style lubrication (not through the pushrods) I've read every internet article, forum post, magazine article and book chapter I can get my hands on, but still a little hazy on the issue of tubing the block...

    To Zero Deck or not

FABO'ers: I'm starting a 340/416 build with '72 340 block; Eagle forged crank; Eagle I-beam rods and dish Ross pistons. Along with aluminum Edelbrock heads. With this piston I will need to deck the block 0.017" to get zero deck and take advantage of the closed-chamber heads; as well as...
