its not a "bad one". its just not as easy to rebuild or as long lasting. i believe that the cones can be machined down at the small end and shims added at the large end to bring it back into specs. do a search here and maybe over at moparts and im sure youll find alot more info
just installed a new tailshaft bushing in my trans and the driveshaft yoke is not snug/tight in the bushing. how tight should it be? there is no measureable wear in the yoke. is a bit of "slop" normal. if not, who sells new yokes?
thanks

from what ive read, you need to flatten/cut off the flange/standing seam where the firewall meets the floorboard. i welded mine on the inside and cut it off
that looks just like the stuff i pulled out of my 66. there were a few brackets welded to the floorhump that the shifter bolted to, as well as the console. do you have a console now?
btw, where are you from?
if you have a grease gun you can buy a needle attachment that allows you to inject grease deep into the bearing. works great and was fairly cheap. me thinks i got them at napa
you pretty much have it. in a turn the rear will let the clutches "slip" if traction on both sides is equal. however, if you are in rain or snow and traction is not good, both tires may spin at the same speed causing loss of traction and control.
if its a sure grip, you shouldnt be able to spin one tire with the other one locked in place. think of a sure grip as a clutch disc clamped tight between each tire. if you turn one tire and the other side turned the OPPOSITE way then its not a sure grip..........but a 489 is one hell of a great...
youll spend more fixing a 7 1/4 then buying another one. theres guys on this forum giving them away. 7 1/4s are pretty much junk. if you want to spend money buy a 8 1/4.
ive heard there are only a couple in the USA. on the west coast try dutchman in portland oregon.

i had mine cut and dutchman did an excellant job
keep looking until you find a sure grip rear end. you will save $$ if you dont have to change it later on. look in earlier 1/2 ton pickups. mine came out of a 67 1/2 ton. 3.91 with the sure grip. theres also 2 kinds of sure grips and you want the rebuildable one.
long time ago i had a 360 in a challenger and couldnt find a 360 flywheel. ended up cutting the weights off a 360 torque converter and fastening them to the back side of the flywheel. worked fine and seemed to be balanced fine. sounds hokey but it works
