1965 Dodge Dart Charger

-
My 66 has it on the front only. The rear has a chrome molding around the glass. I am sure 64&5's are the same. tmm

Thanks, I kinda figured that, learn something everyday! I really hope this will work on Ulf's car now, it would be pretty tough to find more NOS stuff like this, this is the only stuff I have ever come across, thanks Mike :glasses7:

I am amazed at all the cool stuff you find! It's cool to help Ulf find parts for his restoration half a world away. Keep up the good work Keith. tmm

Ahhhhh, yes, the early A-body lockstrip. Used on '60-'66 A-body windshields except very early-production 1960 Valiant V200; '60-'65 Valiant backglass; '61-'62 Lancer backglass, '63 Dart backglass, all the way around '64-'65 Baccaruda backglass, and across the bottom of '66 Baccaruda backglass. Part number is 2082 278. This has been a pain-in-the-nuts (extinct) part for early A-body restoration for many years. The original type has been out of production and unavailable for decades. There are lockstrips from various other applications (GM trucks, etc.) that fit more or less OK and hold up variably, but none of them has the same surface contour.

Similar lockstrips of different widths and depths were used in various applications on other '60-'65 Mopars. This what you're showing here, p/n 2422 471, is the lockstrip for the quarter glass on 1962-'65 Plymouth-Dodge station wagons (except Custom 880). It may or may not be the correct width, depth, and/or length for use on an A-body windshield gasket. I have my doubts, since the one part number (2082 278 ) was used for all those different-length applications listed above, 2422 471 appears in the same FPCs with different applications, and the one number does not supersede to the other. But stranger things have happened in the Chrysler parts system!

Ulf (or anyone else) if you wind up figuring out how to get some of the correct material made…count me in!

Thanks for the info Dan! I spoke with Ulf earlier today and he did mention some wagons used it as well. If the size is right, that would still be great and could work, it looks to have the same shape and pattern, i'll measure it next chance I get.

Thanks Keith, Dan and all you guys that has commented the locking strip. I will do measurements when I get home from work but what I know of there were the same locking strip on all Mopars except the onces Dan mentioned. We will see how it turns out later today!

I stopped by Emils place (Metal Madness) and he had done a great job on the fuel tank. The corners and all are like factory did it. However one dent was missed so he will pick it up on Wednesday and have it done until next weekend.

That itself is great news cause after calling several companies here in Sweden re ni-terne coating I found out it's not legal here due to a EU law. But alot of the companies had some reference with a company in St Paul, Minnesota. I need to get in contact with them.

It seems that the ni-terne coating is a two step procedure;

1. The steel it self is treated with a thin coating of electrodeposited nickel.

2. Then the product itself is given a hot-dip lead-tin alloy coating.

That is the coating that I need to have done on the gas tank and the fuel filler neck.

I rolled it out, it looks like it may be a little too short, measured at 134" long, it was not pulled real tight so could maybe add another 2, maybe 3 inches to the length.....it is pretty long, looks like it would be enough to do a front window but not sure, I guess if your old one was longer, then this might not work...dang it.

Would you still be interested in this?

Keith! Thanks for the measurements. I measured my locking strip and it's 139 inches. If I'm interested- you bet! Check closer how long it is. I might use the factory cover!

Today I got a picture from the paint guys Michael and Togga! They said that the work was well worth the effort laying on the floor and shooting very rich layers of paint to make the drips underneath!

Tomorrow the assembly line starts to add the front fenders and the front valance panel. Getting better.........

I blast today. Mounting the front fenders as well as adding the front valence panel was ton of fun! They have done a superb job. All I had to do was to bring all the restored nuts and bolts.

The front of the front fenders was tight when I got the car but I can see why. The spot welds has not lined up correct so there is a tighter front compare to what I should have been.

Michael and Togga have sprayed the lower body with the greenish primer. They over sprayed the rear area of the car. Reason is simply that after coming up from the second layer of primer the car vent up to pretty high above the grund and that gives the car a big angle and due to that there should be more drippings at the back of the car compare to the front!

The front valence was superb in fitting properly. Now there is a gap of 7,24" all the way which means that there will not be the usual sagging in the middle of the hood due to closing the hood too hard.

I ordered the body sealing today so I can pick it up and do the sealing on Monday after work!

After searching for trunk mat I have found out that allaf the new ones are made by vinyl. Does any FABO member know if they repop the carpet with the right material? I don't know what it's called but it seems like some kind of asphalt!!

My carpet, or at least the pieces I found looks more like the one in the first picture.

Probably worth talking to REM Automotive about their trunk mats; I think they make the ones sold by Dante's as described here. I think they are probably going to be the closest you can get to the original -- if your '65 original is anything like my '62 original, it's a weird material with a rough texture on the back, kind of like a soft version of linoleum. I've never seen such a material offered in the aftermarket.

Thanks Dan! I have sent a request to Dantes for the trunk mat.It seems that they are the closest to find on the market. I just can't get the nameon my pattern!! I havethe following to choose from; Houndstooth, Herringbone, Tan Plaid and Gray Plaid!Any help is appriciated.

I got a package today from Totally Auto. Dave Ferro and the team did an excellent job on my worned out aluminium mouldings. They turned them into assembly line standard. My NOS front ones "candy canes" looks not so good compared with the restored ones!!

I found another trunk wiring harness for the taillights. On this particular one is the part number tag on! I did not have that on any other car. Differencies between Detroit, St Louis and Los Angeles?

I ordered a package of wiring ends from Arizona Parts. With these ends I was able to restore the bulb socket and put new seat in. Turned out great.

I checked all glass before I boxed them up for transport to Finland. Front window has the markings in the middle of the window and the lower part. The markings has been done from outside.

Rear window has the markings centered in the middle of the lower part. They are located on the inside of the glass.

The glass for the doors has the markings on the right side on the glass. Sam glass on the drivers door = one saved partnumber! The rear quarter glass has the markings on the right side of the glass. So Chrysler did a great job cutting part numbers , racks, warehouse area and such!

It seems that around 1964/1965 they changes the system for date codes on the car parts. For example I have an L4 carburator which is November 1964. Here you can see the front windshield has M4 which means December 1964 while the rear window has 114 for November 1964!! Funny!

Finally before leaving the shop and picked up my NOS trunk panel. It's very dirty so I need to give it a good clean. Bought it 25 years ago in Finland!

Gray plaid. TTBOMK The houndstooth and herringbone patterns and the tan plaid weren't yet in use in '65. I put a tan plaid mat in my (metallic tan) '65 and it looked great, but I knew it was not original -- the original grey plaid mat came out of that car in about 3 pieces.

Stopped by the paint guys Michael and Togga and the guys are teaming up real good. The body sealer was applayed when I showed up. After doing it too nice they hace to redo one part of it. We were lucky to have a 65 New Yorker there too where we could see how the body sealer in the trunk looked like. Man, that looked worse then I never seen before. The result was great.

At the local PPG dealer they were mixing the paint. I will pick it up and deliver it on Friday so they can paint the body on Friday and the interior next week.

Getting better and better........:coffee2:

I would love to buy it. Check the length and width! Let me know whenyou can ship. I want to mount it in the nos front weatherstripping!

A got a package today from my friend Don aka 65 dartman. I found these on ebay and when I compare the factory ones with my home madeones I can see that there is some small differencies. My friend Johan will do the work on gicing the Cragar S/S caps ready with a flat area where to put the DartCharger badge!

Good news! The wheels are welded back together. But the work with widening the white wall tires takes it skills!

The gas tank is finally done and just need a supplier of ni-terne coating

But I'm in big need of the rear wheel well mouldings! Any help is bery appriciated.

Thanks FABO

I found a gas tank strap for a 1967 Dart. It does look like a 1965 Dart but I'm not sure about the measurements. Does anyone know if there is a difference in lenght between 1965 Dart and 1967 Dart?

Both original factory and present-day aftermarket catalogues list different P/N for the tank strap on a '65 vs. a '67.

Thanks Dan! I guess I just need to contiunue searching..... The ni-terne coating companies don't grow on trees for sure! I have emailed 12 of them but no answer!!

On the backside of my Cragar wheels there are weldings that needs some attention. Question is if they were coated with something, left natural or if it was silver sprayed? Any input out there?

The backside of the ash tray is finally done. Man it took sometime. But I wonder where to find those rivets?

The factory ground between the fuel line and the fuel tank sendeing unit seems to have been silver! The ones I have seen Before were all blach phosphate. Any one seen them in silver?

Under the dash board is a bracket for the parking brake lever. On my car it was bolted to the instrument panel. But,I forgot if it was painted gold or left natural!

On my black dash GT, it was black. On the gold dash Valiant I parted out (still have the dash), it was dash color and on my blue dash wagon, it's blue. I'd say it's supposed to be dash color and probably painted at the same time as the dash.

I had a '70 Challenger a few years back and replaced the ground strap on it. I'm almost 100% sure I bought the replacement at the local Dodge dealer and it was a silver color.
If you can't find one I can ask my parts guy to see if they are still available. Mine looked just like the one you pictured. It could have been a different length but I doubt it.

Last time I checked, the fuel sender ground clip/strap is still available from Chrysler under p/n 2258 862. Most of the ones I've ever seen have been "underbody color" (compacted dirt/dust/undercoating/rust)!

As for the wheel welds, I would think (but don't know for certain) that the welding was done before the chrome plating.

I agree on the handbrake bracket: body colour.

Dan,
I 'googled' that p/n and checked a couple of sellers that came up in the search.

A place called 521 Restorations had a pic that showed a black one.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mopar-Fuel-...-Charger-RoadRunner-Dart-Duster-/230843842227

Roseville Moparts has a pic that shows it to be silver.
http://www.rosevillemoparts.com/product_info.php/p/clip-fuel-tank-grounding/products_id/1063

I'm betting the one from a dealer will be silver colored (as was the one I bought a few years ago).

Thanks Don, Dan and Dallas for helping me out and shed some light!

Finally the car has been painted. These pictures are the ones that I got from Michael and Togga. I will stop by later today! Yes, can hardly believe it!
